Uncertainty in Individuals' Preferences for Non-commodity Outputs Provided by Rural Development Programs (RDPs): A Contingent Valuation Approach

    Get PDF
Rural development programs (RDPs) are currently envisaged as a means to foster the provision of a broad range of non-commodity outputs emanating from multifunctional rural environments. This paper presents a Contingent Valuation survey that analyses individuals’ perceptions of and willingness to pay (WTP) for the implementation of a RDP in Cantabria, Spain. Uncertainty in individuals’ preferences is explicitly acknowledged and introduced into our analytical framework. For that purpose, a comparison is made between the open-ended (OE) and the multiple bounded uncertainty (MBU) elicitation formats. According to our behavioural model estimates, the expectation of a positive welfare change for both rural and urban dwellers constitutes a sound argument in favour of regional rural development policies.rural development policy, non-commodity outputs, contingent valuation, elicitation formats, uncertainty, Agricultural and Food Policy, Q0, Q18, Q51, R0,

Social Preferences for Management of Rural Forests in the Iberian Atlantic Region

This article presents results from an experiment into attribute perception and relevant levels for management of woodland and mountain areas typical of the Iberian Peninsula's Atlantic region. The aim, which the authors argue has been robustly reached, was to identify those aspects of forestry policy clearly perceived by citizens. This is useful for defining enlargement of areas protected under Natura 2000 Network. Results show clear preference for an increase in woodland to over half the current surface area, with replanting of traditional trees, in woodlands of low density and trees of different age and, preferably in irregular shaped plots.Landscape preference, Visual quality, Non-market goods, Preference models, Economic valuation, Landscape Management, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

We analyze the lending behavior of the commercial banks in the credit market at the local level by localities in Brazil for the period from 2005 to 2013. We use a high-frequency database from Brazil Central Bank of the main items of balance sheets of commercial banks and multiple banks with commercial portfolio. We used fixed-effects panel and non-additive fixed-effect quantile panel for a universe of 2,601 localities. We find evidence of poor credit allocation by state-owned banks after the 2008-2009 financial crisis for the non-earmarked credit market segment. The larger credit expansion, the deteriorating loan quality and the political targeted bank lending seem to be main determinants of such poor allocation

_________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to assess the treatment demand of pediatric patients assisted by undergraduates at the University Hospital of BrasĂlia. Therefore, 47 dental records of patients aged 5-13 who were assisted by undergraduates from May 2012 to May 2014 were assessed. Age, sex, type and number of clinical procedures were collected. For data analysis, the procedures were grouped by category: prevention, operative dentistry, endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics and surgery. The sample consisted of 24 boys and 23 girls with a mean age of 9.51 years (± 2.54). Regarding the treatment demand, it was observed that there was a greater demand for low-complexity procedures (operative dentistry and prevention - 75.24%) compared to the demand for more complex procedures (extractions and root canal treatment - 11.26%). Restorative procedures were the most common treatment performed (51.77%), and the glass ionomer cement was the restorative material of choice in most of cases (68.32%). Based on the results, it can be concluded that tooth decay and its consequences are the main reasons why patients seek for treatment at the pediatric dentistry clinic of HuB. The choice of glass ionomer cement as a restorative material and the indication of fluorides according to patient's caries activity demonstrated the philosophy of Minimal Intervention adopted by the pediatric dentistry area of the Dentistry course at the University of Brasilia

Rival male chemical cues evoke changes in male pre- and post-copulatory investment in a flour beetle.

This is the final version of the article. Available from Oxford University Press via the DOI in this record.Males can gather information on the risk and intensity of sperm competition from their social environment. Recent studies have implicated chemosensory cues, for instance cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) in insects, as a key source of this information. Here, using the broad-horned flour beetle (Gnatocerus cornutus), we investigated the importance of contact-derived rival male CHCs in informing male perception of sperm competition risk and intensity. We experimentally perfumed virgin females with male CHCs via direct intersexual contact and measured male pre- and post-copulatory investment in response to this manipulation. Using chemical analysis, we verified that this treatment engendered changes to perfumed female CHC profiles, but did not make perfumed females "smell" mated. Despite this, males responded to these chemical changes. Males increased courtship effort under low levels of perceived competition (from 1-3 rivals), but significantly decreased courtship effort as perceived competition rose (from 3-5 rivals). Furthermore, our measurement of ejaculate investment showed that males allocated significantly more sperm to perfumed females than to control females. Together, these results suggest that changes in female chemical profile elicited by contact with rival males do not provide males with information on female mating status, but rather inform males of the presence of rivals within the population and thus provide a means for males to indirectly assess the risk of sperm competition.S.M.L.  was funded by a Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) studentship, J.H.S. was funded by NERC, a Royal Society Fellowship, and a Royal Society Equipment Grant (UF120087), and C.M.H. by a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (ECF/2010/0067)

The sustainability in fashion: a systematic literature review on slow fashion

A reflexive movement around the universe of fashion shows alternatives to combat unrestrained consumption. The weakening of textile resources found in nature, and the devaluation of local production, seeking significantly, attributes that are applicable amid problematization caused since obtaining products. fashion items until their disposal. The slow fashion movement appears as a counterpoint to the fast-fashion model, seeking to add value in a rational way to clothing items in the globalized market, inserting sustainability as the main propagator of this dynamic that grows in a dizzying way over time. Thus, the objective of this research is to identify how slow fashion has been discussed in academic research. For this, a systematic literature search was carried from its first publication, in 2008, until the year 2019. The research is classified as descriptive with a qualitative-quantitative approach. As a result, 105 papers were obtained, ranging from articles in journals and congresses to master\u27s thesis and doctoral dissertations. It is a review of literature on how this topic is being disseminated amid the informational flow of fashion and its easy democratic access and debate, as well as the systematization of data that prove its existence and its interfaces that are relevant in business competitive level. About the results, we identified mostly qualitative research, focusing on the conceptual development of the area until at least mid-2017, with a change to practice during the year 2019, with exponential growth in recent years, especially in countries like Brazil and United States. It was also possible to define the term movement to characterize slow fashion, as well as to determine a holistic concept that better defines the vision of researchers in the area, with special focus on the works of Kate Fletcher. With this review, the necessary knowledge is exposed to deal with the subject in question and expand this theme in other areas that are appropriate to it
