    Impact of Problematic Smartphone Use and Instagram Use Intensity on Self-Esteem with University Students from Physical Education

    Mobile devices are a revolutionary element that offer many possibilities, although they can also cause problems for users. This is the case with the development of addictive behaviors that can affect personal well-being. The purpose of this paper has been to analyze the influence of smartphone addiction and Instagram use intensity on the self-esteem of Physical Education students. A cross-sectional research design was adopted by applying an online survey to a sample of undergraduate students (n = 385). The results showed that gender and age were factors that influenced the problematic use of the smartphone. In turn, there was a significant positive correlation between smartphone addiction and Instagram use intensity. The influence of smartphone addiction on students’ self-esteem was also highlighted. In contrast, Instagram use intensity did not affect self-esteem. Finally, the findings are discussed, and the main implications of the study are established, where physical education students take on a special role in order to avoid the improper use of smartphones and Instagram through sport.University of Granada (Spain) PPJIB2019-0

    Effectiveness of the “What’s Up!” Intervention to Reduce Stigma and Psychometric Properties of the Youth Program Questionnaire (YPQ): Results from a Cluster Non-randomized Controlled Trial Conducted in Catalan High Schools

    Mental disorders are highly prevalent in the general population, and people who experience them are frequently stigmatized. Stigma has a very negative impact on social, academic/professional, and personal life. Considering the high rates of mental disorders among children and adolescents (13.4%) and how critical this age is in the formation of nuclear beliefs, many campaigns to combat stigma have been developed in the last decade, with mixed results. The OBERTAMENT initiative has produced various anti-stigma campaigns in Catalonia (Spain). In the present study, the main objective was to report on the effectiveness of the OBERTAMENT “What’s up!” intervention, a curricular intervention including education and social contact conducted by the teachers in the classroom with teenagers aged between 14 and 18. Prior to this, we examined the psychometric properties of the Youth Program Questionnaire (YPQ), our main outcome measure, in terms of dimensionality, reliability, and validity. A cluster non-randomized controlled trial was conducted to assess this intervention, which was tested in nine high schools situated in the Barcelona region. A convenience sample of 261 students formed the intervention group and 132 the control group (52% women, mean age = 14, SD = 0.47). The assignment to study conditions was conducted by Departament d’Ensenyament (Department of Education), Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government). Participants were evaluated at baseline, post-intervention, and 9-month follow-up. The main outcome measure of this study was the YPQ. The Reported and Intended Behavior Scale (RIBS) was used as secondary outcome measure. The statistical analysis indicated that the YPQ possesses a two-factor structure (stereotypical attitudes and intended behavior) and sound psychometric properties. The multilevel mixed-effects models revealed statistically significant interactions for both study measures and post hoc intragroup analyses revealed a significant but small improvement in the YPQ and RIBS scores in the intervention group. Overall, our results indicate that “What’s up!” produced statistically significant, albeit small improvements in stereotypical attributions and intended behavior toward people with mental disorders. Some methodological limitations and the relatively low levels of stigma observed in our sample may undermine our results. The implications of our results are discussed in relation to stigma research

    An analysis and proposal for the work of social workers in psychopedagogical services in schools in the Valencian Autonomous Community

    Los Trabajadores Sociales de Educación de la provincia de Alicante nos planteamos la necesidad de actualizar las funciones que la normativa de la, denominada en su día, Conselleria de Educación y Ciencia nos marca, dentro de los Servicios Psicopedagógicos Escolares (SPE) y Gabinetes Psicopedagógicos Municipales (GPM) de la Comunidad Autónoma Valenciana. Los motivos vienen determinados por considerar una normativa obsoleta (Orden 10 de marzo de 1995), una realidad social y educativa cambiante que determinan nuevas demandas hacia el trabajador social de educación, y la configuración de un perfil profesional que nos diferencie de otros profesionales que también intervienen en el ámbito socio-educativo. Este documento es el resultado del trabajo realizado inicialmente por un grupo de trabajadores sociales de educación (a partir de ahora TRASO) de la Provincia de Alicante y consensuado, finalmente, en el I Encuentro de Trabajadores Sociales de Educación de la Comunidad Autónoma Valenciana en diciembre de 2016.As social workers in education in the province of Alicante we consider it necessary to update our roles as described in the regulations of the Regional Council of Education and Science, within the School Psychopedagogical Services and the Municipal Educational Psychopedagogical Services of the Autonomous Community of Valencia. We propose these changes because the regulations are outdated (1995), and because of the need to reflect the changing educational and social reality. In addition, the work of social workers in the educational field has changed, and social workers need their own professional profile that is differentiated from that of other professionals who work in the field of education. This document is the result of the work of a group of social workers in the educational field in the province of Alicante. It was approved by the first meeting of social workers in the educational field in the Autonomous Community of Valencia in December of 2016

    Novel frameshift variants expand the map of the genetic defects in IRF2BP2

    BackgroundAt present, the knowledge about disease-causing mutations in IRF2BP2 is very limited because only a few patients affected by this condition have been reported. As previous studies have described, the haploinsufficiency of this interferon transcriptional corepressors leads to the development of CVID. Very recently, a more accurate phenotype produced by truncating variants in this gene has been defined, manifesting CVID with gastrointestinal inflammatory symptoms and autoimmune manifestations.MethodsWe analyzed 5 index cases with suspected primary immunodeficiency by high throughput sequencing. They were submitted for a genetic test with a panel of genes associated with immune system diseases, including IRF2BP2. The screening of SNVs, indels and CNVs fulfilling the criteria with very low allelic frequency and high protein impact, revealed five novel variants in IRF2BP2. In addition, we isolated both wild-type and mutated allele of the cDNA from one of the families.ResultsIn this study, we report five novel loss-of-function (LoF) mutations in IRF2BP2 that likely cause primary immunodeficiency, with CVID as more frequent phenotype, variable expression of inflammatory gastrointestinal features, and one patient with predisposition of viral infection. All identified variants were frameshift changes, and one of them was a large deletion located on chromosome 1q42, which includes the whole sequence of IRF2BP2, among other genes. Both de novo and dominant modes of inheritance were observed in the families here presented, as well as incomplete penetrance.ConclusionsWe describe novel variants in a delimited low-complex region, which may be considered a hotspot in IRF2BP2. Moreover, this is the first time that a large CNV in IRF2BP2 has been reported to cause CVID. The distinct mechanisms than LoF in IRF2BP2 could cause different phenotype compared with the mainly described. Further investigations are necessary to comprehend the regulatory mechanisms of IRF2BP2, which could be under variable expression of the disease

    Association of a single nucleotide polymorphism combination pattern of the Klotho gene with non-cardiovascular death in patients with chronic kidney disease

    Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with an elevated risk of all-cause mortality, with cardiovascular death being extensively investigated. However, non-cardiovascular mortality represents the biggest percentage, showing an evident increase in recent years. Klotho is a gene highly expressed in the kidney, with a clear influence on lifespan. Low levels of Klotho have been linked to CKD progression and adverse outcomes. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the Klotho gene have been associated with several diseases, but studies investigating the association of Klotho SNPs with noncardiovascular death in CKD populations are lacking. The main aim of this study was to assess whether 11 Klotho SNPs were associated with non-cardiovascular death in a subpopulation of the National Observatory of Atherosclerosis in Nephrology (NEFRONA) study (n ¼ 2185 CKD patients). After 48 months of follow-up, 62 cardiovascular deaths and 108 non-cardiovascular deaths were recorded. We identified a high non-cardiovascular death risk combination of SNPs corresponding to individuals carrying the most frequent allele (G) at rs562020, the rare allele (C) at rs2283368 and homozygotes for the rare allele (G) at rs2320762 (rs562020 GG/AG þ rs2283368 CC/CT þ rs2320762 GG). Among the patients with the three SNPs genotyped (n ¼ 1016), 75 (7.4%) showed this combination. Furthermore, 95 (9.3%) patients showed a low-risk combination carrying all the opposite genotypes (rs562020 AA þ rs2283368 TT þ rs2320762 GT/TT). All the other combinations [n ¼ 846 (83.3%)] were considered as normal risk. Using competing risk regression analysis, we confirmed that the proposed combinations are independently associated with a higher fhazard ratio [HR] 3.28 [confidence interval (CI) 1.51-7.12]g and lower [HR 6 × 10- (95% CI 3.3 × 10--1.1 × 10-)] risk of suffering a non-cardiovascular death in the CKD population of the NEFRONA cohort compared with patients with the normal-risk combination. Determination of three SNPs of the Klotho gene could help in the prediction of non-cardiovascular death in CKD

    Esta publicación pretende servir de ayuda para aquellas personas que se inicien en el mundo de la citricultura, lleguen a distinguir variedades, considerando las características de la planta que puedan ser fácilmente reconocibles y que aquí se exponen de la manera más sencilla posible. Refiriéndonos a especies, las podemos diferenciar según la forma de las hojas. En algunos casos concretos estrujándolas, se puede percibir el aroma característico que desprenden. La identificación se complica cuando se desea reconocer la variedad, sobre todo si el fruto ha sido recolectado o se encuentra evolucionando hacia su tamaño, color y madurez natural. Además, el estado vegetativo que pueden presentar los árboles de una misma variedad, puede ser algo distinto en función de la textura del suelo, la profundidad, las labores de cultivo que se realicen, etc. Sin embargo, una vez se va adquiriendo experiencia, es posible conseguir distinguirlas, en base a la observación de una serie de caracteres y parámetros representativos de cada una de ellas. Estos caracteres y parámetros se presentan en porcentajes variables entre campos distintos de una misma variedad, e incluso entre árboles de un mismo campo. La experiencia nos ha demostrado que para distinguir las variedades de una forma práctica, en primer lugar, se debe observar el conjunto del arbolado desde cierta distancia, lo que nos puede indicar la forma del árbol, el hábito de crecimiento, el color en conjunto, el tamaño, etc. A continuación, diferenciar las especies por la forma de las hojas y encuadrar las variedades en cada especie: y por último, confirmar si reúnen o no los caracteres y parámetros propios de las variedades descritas

    Nanoplasmonic biosensors for clinical diagnosis at the point of care

    Aquesta Tesi Doctoral se centra en el desenvolupament de noves metodologies analítiques en biosensors òptics com a solucions alternatives per a la diagnosi o la monitorització terapèutica de diferents malalties, com ara l'al·lèrgia, la celiaquia o el càncer. En particular, es proposa l'ús de biosensors nanoplasmònics per a la detecció de biomarcardors presents en fluids humans de manera ràpida, sensible i que no requereixi d'amplificació de senyal o de l'ús d'etiquetes. Tant el ja ben establert biosensor de Ressonància de Plasmó Superficial (SPR) com un innovador biosensor nanoplasmonic basat en nanodiscs d'or han estat avaluats per a la seva aplicació real en l'àrea clínica. Les distintes metodologies biosensores presentades estan basades en l'ús d'anticossos, tant com a elements de bioreconeixement o com a biomarcadors específics de malalties. Primer, es presenta un estudi en profunditat de dues estratègies d'immobilització orientada d'anticossos per tal d'obtenir immunoassaigs en format directe de biomarcadors proteics en fluids biològics. En segon lloc, es proposa una nova estratègia immunosensora per a la detecció de pèptids derivats del gluten directament en orina com a tècnica ràpida i no invasiva per al control dietètic de pacients celíacs. A més, s'han desenvolupat dues metodologies utilitzant el biosensor nanoplasmònic per a detectar anticossos circulants en sang com a biomarcadors de malalties. Per una banda, s'ha dissenyat una estratègia alternativa per a la diagnosi d'al·lèrgia als medicaments (en particular a l'antibiòtic amoxicil·lina) basada en uns receptors dendrimèrics per a la detecció directa d'anticossos tipus IgE en sèrum. Finalment, s'ha avaluat una nova estratègia biosensora per a quantificar específicament autoanticossos tumorals per a la diagnosi precoç de càncer colorectal. El treball d'aquesta Tesi combina l'experiència del grup de recerca en el disseny i fabricació de tecnologia biosensora avançada i innovadora amb el desenvolupament de tècniques bioanalítiques i de química de superfície per tal de superar els reptes actuals relacionats amb el cost i el temps requerit per a les anàlisis clíniques. A més, l'àmplia experiència del grup de recerca en transferència tecnològica i les col·laboracions establertes durant la tesi doctoral amb empreses com Biomedal S.L. o Protein Alternatives S.L. obren oportunitats interesants de cara a facilitar el procés de transferència tecnològica per a la implementació real de biosensors tipus Point-of-Care.This Doctoral Thesis focuses on the development of novel analytical methodologies in optical biosensors as alternative solutions for diagnosis or therapy monitoring of relevant diseases, such as allergy, celiac disease or cancer. In particular, we propose the use of nanoplasmonic biosensors for a rapid, sensitive and label-free detection of biomarkers present in human fluids. Both the well-known Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) biosensor and an innovative nanoplasmonic biosensor based on gold nanodisks surfaces have been evaluated for their real application in the clinical field. The different biosensor methodologies make use of antibodies, either as biorecognition elements in immunoassays or as specific disease biomarkers for diagnostics. First, an in-depth study of two site-directed antibody immobilization strategies is presented for the direct immunoassay of protein biomarkers in biological fluids. In second place, a novel immunosensing strategy is proposed for the detection of gluten-derivative peptides in urine as a rapid and non-invasive technique for dietary control in celiac patients. On the other hand, two assays have been developed employing the nanoplasmonic biosensor to detect blood circulating antibodies as disease biomarkers. First, we have designed an alternative approach for drug allergy diagnosis (in particular for amoxicillin) based on dendrimer-based receptors, which enable the detection IgE antibodies directly in serum. And second, a new biosensing strategy is assessed to quantify specific tumor-related autoantibodies for the early diagnosis of colorectal cancer. The work in this Thesis combines the wide knowledge of the research group in the design and fabrication of powerful biosensor technology with the development of surface activation chemistry and bioanalytical techniques to overcome current challenges related to costly and time-consuming clinical analysis. Besides, the strong experience of our research group in technological transfer and the established collaborations during this doctoral work with companies as Biomedal S.L. or Protein Alternatives S.L. open up interesting opportunities to facilitate the technology-transfer process for the real implementation of Point-of-Care biosensors

    Label-free SPR detection of gluten peptides in urine for non-invasive celiac disease follow-up

    Motivated by the necessity of new and efficient methods for dietary gluten control of celiac patients, we have developed a simple and highly sensitive SPR biosensor for the detection of gluten peptides in urine. The sensing methodology enables rapid and label-free quantification of the gluten immunogenic peptides (GIP) by using G12 mAb. The overall performance of the biosensor has been in-depth optimized and evaluated in terms of sensitivity, selectivity and reproducibility, reaching a limit of detection of 0.33ngmL. Besides, the robustness and stability of the methodology permit the continuous use of the biosensor for more than 100 cycles with excellent repeatability. Special efforts have been focused on preventing and minimizing possible interferences coming from urine matrix enabling a direct analysis in this fluid without requiring extraction or purification procedures. Our SPR biosensor has proven to detect and identify gluten consumption by evaluating urine samples from healthy and celiac individuals with different dietary gluten conditions. This novel biosensor methodology represents a novel approach to quantify the digested gluten peptides in human urine with outstanding sensitivity in a rapid and non-invasive manner. Our technique should be considered as a promising opportunity to develop Point-of-Care (POC) devices for an efficient, simple and accurate gluten free diet (GFD) monitoring as well as therapy follow-up of celiac disease patients
