Fluctons
From the perspective of topological field theory we explore the physics
beyond instantons. We propose the fluctons as nonperturbative topological
fluctuations of vacuum, from which the self-dual domain of instantons is
attained as a particular case. Invoking the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, we
determine the dimension of the corresponding flucton moduli space, which gives
the number of degrees of freedom of the fluctons. An important consequence of
these results is that the topological phases of vacuum in non-Abelian gauge
theories are not necessarily associated with self-dual fields, but only with
smooth fields. Fluctons in different scenarios are considered, the basic
aspects of the quantum mechanical amplitude for fluctons are discussed, and the
case of gravity is discussed briefly
Effective Quantum Dynamics of Interacting Systems with Inhomogeneous Coupling
We study the quantum dynamics of a single mode/particle interacting
inhomogeneously with a large number of particles and introduce an effective
approach to find the accessible Hilbert space where the dynamics takes place.
Two relevant examples are given: the inhomogeneous Tavis-Cummings model (e.g.,
N atomic qubits coupled to a single cavity mode, or to a motional mode in
trapped ions) and the inhomogeneous coupling of an electron spin to N nuclear
spins in a quantum dot.Comment: 9 pages and 10 figures, new version, accepted in Physical Review
Scalable quantum memory in the ultrastrong coupling regime
Circuit quantum electrodynamics, consisting of superconducting artificial
atoms coupled to on-chip resonators, represents a prime candidate to implement
the scalable quantum computing architecture because of the presence of good
tunability and controllability. Furthermore, recent advances have pushed the
technology towards the ultrastrong coupling regime of light-matter interaction,
where the qubit-resonator coupling strength reaches a considerable fraction of
the resonator frequency. Here, we propose a qubit-resonator system operating in
that regime, as a quantum memory device and study the storage and retrieval of
quantum information in and from the Z2 parity-protected quantum memory, within
experimentally feasible schemes. We are also convinced that our proposal might
pave a way to realize a scalable quantum random-access memory due to its fast
storage and readout performances.Comment: We have updated the title, abstract and included a new section on the

Measure of phonon-number moments and motional quadratures through infinitesimal-time probing of trapped ions
A method for gaining information about the phonon-number moments and the
generalized nonlinear and linear quadratures in the motion of trapped ions (in
particular, position and momentum) is proposed, valid inside and outside the
Lamb-Dicke regime. It is based on the measurement of first time derivatives of
electronic populations, evaluated at the motion-probe interaction time t=0. In
contrast to other state-reconstruction proposals, based on measuring Rabi
oscillations or dispersive interactions, the present scheme can be performed
resonantly at infinitesimal short motion-probe interaction times, remaining
thus insensitive to decoherence processes.Comment: 10 pages. Accepted in JPhys
Creation of quantum error correcting codes in the ultrastrong coupling regime
We propose to construct large quantum graph codes by means of superconducting
circuits working at the ultrastrong coupling regime. In this physical scenario,
we are able to create a cluster state between any pair of qubits within a
fraction of a nanosecond. To exemplify our proposal, creation of the five-qubit
and Steane codes is numerically simulated. We also provide optimal operating
conditions with which the graph codes can be realized with state-of-the-art
superconducting technologies.Comment: Added a new appendix sectio
Dynamical Analysis of Nearby ClustErs. Automated astrometry from the ground: precision proper motions over wide field
The kinematic properties of the different classes of objects in a given
association hold important clues about its member's history, and offer a unique
opportunity to test the predictions of the various models of stellar formation
and evolution. DANCe (standing for Dynamical Analysis of Nearby ClustErs) is a
survey program aimed at deriving a comprehensive and homogeneous census of the
stellar and substellar content of a number of nearby (<1kpc) young (<500Myr)
associations. Whenever possible, members will be identified based on their
kinematics properties, ensuring little contamination from background and
foreground sources. Otherwise, the dynamics of previously confirmed members
will be studied using the proper motion measurements. We present here the
method used to derive precise proper motion measurements, using the Pleiades
cluster as a test bench. Combining deep wide field multi-epoch panchromatic
images obtained at various obervatories over up to 14 years, we derive accurate
proper motions for the sources present in the field of the survey. The datasets
cover ~80 square degrees, centered around the Seven Sisters. Using new tools,
we have computed a catalog of 6116907 unique sources, including proper motion
measurements for 3577478 of them. The catalogue covers the magnitude range
between i=12~24mag, achieving a proper motion accuracy <1mas/yr for sources as
faint as i=22.5mag. We estimate that our final accuracy reaches 0.3mas/yr in
the best cases, depending on magnitude, observing history, and the presence of
reference extragalactic sources for the anchoring onto the ICRS.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
Strong-driving-assisted multipartite entanglement in cavity QED
We propose a method of generating multipartite entanglement by considering
the interaction of a system of N two-level atoms in a cavity of high quality
factor with a strong classical driving field. It is shown that, with a
judicious choice of the cavity detuning and the applied coherent field
detuning, vacuum Rabi coupling produces a large number of important
multipartite entangled states. It is even possible to produce entangled states
involving different cavity modes. Tuning of parameters also permits us to
switch from Jaynes-Cummings to anti-Jaynes-Cummings like interaction.Comment: Last version with minor changes and added references. Accepted for

Follow-up monitoring in a cat with leishmaniosis and coinfections with Hepatozoon felis and ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum’
Case summary
A 6-year-old female neutered domestic shorthair cat from Cyprus was presented with multiple ulcerated skin nodules. Cytology and histopathology of the lesions revealed granulomatous dermatitis with intracytoplasmic organisms, consistent with amastigotes of Leishmania species. Biochemistry identified a mild hyperproteinaemia. Blood extraction and PCR detected Leishmania species, Hepatozoon species and ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum’ (CMhm) DNA. Subsequent sequencing identified Hepatozoon felis. Additionally, the rRNA internal transcribed spacer 1 locus of Leishmania infantum was partially sequenced and phylogeny showed it to cluster with species derived from dogs in Italy and Uzbekistan, and a human in France. Allopurinol treatment was administered for 6 months. Clinical signs resolved in the second month of treatment with no deterioration 8 months post-treatment cessation. Quantitative PCR and ELISA were used to monitor L infantum blood DNA and antibody levels. The cat had high L infantum DNA levels pretreatment that gradually declined during treatment but increased 8 months post-treatment cessation. Similarly, ELISA revealed high levels of antibodies pretreatment, which gradually declined during treatment and increased slightly 8 months post-treatment cessation. The cat remained PCR positive for CMhm and Hepatozoon species throughout the study. There was no clinical evidence of relapse 24 months post-treatment.
Relevance and novel information
To our knowledge, this is the first clinical report of a cat with leishmaniosis with H felis and CMhm coinfections. The high L infantum DNA levels post-treatment cessation might indicate that although the lesions had resolved, prolonged or an alternative treatment could have been considere
