    Is simultaneous yy and ξ\xi--scaling in the quasi-elastic region accidental?

    We study the yy and ξ\xi--scaling of the nuclear response at large momentum transfer in order to understand how scaling based on very different descriptions of the elementary interaction can occur simultaneously. We find that the approximate validity of ξ\xi-scaling at low energy loss arises from the coincidental behavior of the quasielastic and deep inelastic cross sections.Comment: 4 pages, 3 Postscript figure

    Lateral Buckling of Prismatic Members About an Imposed Axis of Rotation

    This paper deals with the lateral buckling of prismatic members whose position of the axis of rotation is imposed by the conditions of lateral support. As a function of the type of connection with the lateral support, the rotation may be free or hindered (elastic end restraint). This may concern, for instance, the case of a purlin stabilized by a roof structure or of a column stabilized by an external cladding or by another type of efficient continuous bracing. Usually, the check of this type of instability is complex and leads to sophisticated and tedious computations. In order to avoid this inconvenience, approached solutions are often used. One of the most frequently used consists in calculating the compressed member as being fictitiously separated, submitted to lateral buckling in an elastic medium. The stiffness of this fictitious member is taken equal to its stiffness in lateral bending. The present paper proposes an improved behaviour model of members submitted to lateral buckling through which the stiffness of the fictitious member is determined by taking into account the torsional stiffness of the whole transverse section of the profile

    A Non Linear Design Model for Continuous Multi-span Light Gauge Sheeting and Members

    The calculation of profiled sheeting and members by using the post-critical stage in which a plastic hinge is originated at the internal support is possible provided that the relationships between the support moment, reaction and hinge rotation are known. There are two alternative procedures of testing for obtaining these data: double-span test or internal support test. In the second one, instead of a global behaviour, only the local relationships between the three above characteristics are determined. When calculating with the model proposed in Eurocode 3, Part 1.3, the above two different test procedures do not lead to close enough results. The present paper is aimed at both explaining the reasons of these differences and proposing consequently an improved approach to the behaviour at the internal support

These permissions are granted for the duration of the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic.This chapter is written to make the fast-paced, expanding field of the genetics of autism accessible to those practitioners who help children with autism. New genetic knowledge and technology have quickly developed over the past 30 years, particularly within the past decade, and have made many optimistic about our ability to explain autism. Among these advances include the sequencing of the human genome (Lander et al., 2001) and the identification of common genetic variants via the HapMap project (International HapMap Consortium, 2005), and the development of cost-efficient genotyping and analysis technologies (Losh, Sullivan, Trembath, & Piven, 2008). Improvement in technology has led to improved visualization of chromosomal abnormality down to the molecular level. The four most common syndromes associated with autism include fragile X syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, 15q duplications, and untreated phenylketonuria (PKU; Costa e Silva, 2008). FXS and 15q duplications are discussed within the context of cytogenetics. TSC is illustrated within the description of linkage analysis

    Arbitrary Q-factor Dielectric Resonator

    New circuit component, active resonator, is proposed for use in microwave and millimetrewave circuits. It consists of a common resonator and an amplifier, compensating for losses in the resonator. Properly designed, such an arrangement behaves as a (passive) resonator with dramatically increased quality factor. High quality factors can be achieved even at millimetrewave frequencies, where common resonators suffer from losses due to small skin depths.     Characteristics of lower limb injuries in non-fatal road traffic accidents: a retrospective analysis of forensic medical examinations

    Background. Fractures of the lower limbs are one of the most common injuries in road traffic accidents, however, the frequency and localization of fractures, as well as associated trauma, are not well understood. The purpose of the study was to conduct a retrospective analysis of forensic medical examinations of victims with the road traffic injuries of the lower limbs. Results. The research material was 100 reports of forensic medical examinations of victims with fractures of the femur and/or shin bones resulting from a non-fatal road traffic accidents. The study found that the average age of the victims was 41.5 ± 18.8 years (18 - 81 years). The main contingent of those injured was pedestrians (82%). In victims, the most common injury was polytrauma; closed limb fractures were more common. Hip fractures of various localization were found in 39%, shin fractures - in 59%, ankle fractures - in 12%. Closed head injury with a concussion of the brain of a mild degree (23%), closed fractures of the ribs (3%), self-healing dislocation of the humerus (1%), diaphyseal fractures of the forearm (3%), distal radial bone fractures (7%), and fractures of styloid process of the ulna (2%) were also noted. Conclusions. The main victims of road traffic accidents are pedestrians with polytrauma. The most common localization of fractures of the lower extremities is the diaphysis of the femur and the diaphysis of the shin bones

According to the results of the turbine research the method of determine the coefficients of the conversion function is proposed. In this paper experimental studies of the proposed method are conducted. Research results have shown the adequacy of the description of the transformation function and methods for determining the coefficients

    Complete Atrioventricular Heart Block From an Epilepsy Treatment

    Atrioventricular (AV) heart block without adequate escape rhythm can result in sudden cardiac arrest and death. We report complete (third degree) AV block in a 16 year-old boy as a late effect of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). He experienced brief, daily, complex partial seizures, treated with lamotrigine, levetiracetam, and the placement of Model 102 VNS at age 4. Electroencephalography (EEG) showed generalized slow spike-and-wave discharges consistent with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. At age 12, his VNS was changed to Model 303 PereniaDURA/Model 103 Demipulse generator, set at an output current of 2.25 mA on a standard 30 seconds on, 5 minutes off paradigm. At age 16, he experienced episodes of sudden collapse followed by unconsciousness. Holter monitor showed 15 second symptomatic complete AV block without escape (Figure 1). The patient was taking psychotropic medication with potential cardiac side effects: methylphenidate (tachycardia), guanfacine (first degree AV block), and haloperidol (prolonged QT interval, Torsades de Pointes). Haloperidol, methylphenidate, and VNS were stopped without further symptoms. Off these medications, the VNS was resumed at reduced current (1.25 mA), with re-occurrence of symptomatic AV block. Again, the VNS was stopped and symptoms/heart block ceased. Psychotropic medication was resumed without any side effects
