    The role of abscisic acid and water relations in drought responses of subterranean clover

    The role of water relations and abscisic acid (ABA) in the responses to drought were studied in a mediterranean forage crop, Trifolium subterraneum L. under field conditions. soil and plant water status, leaf gas exchange parameters, and xylem sap ABA content were determined at different times during a long-term soil drying episode in irrigated and droughted plants. The diurnal time-courses of these parameters were also measured at the end of a drought period. In response to soil drying stomatal conductance (g) was reduced early to 50% that of irrigated plants before any substantial change in water potential was detected. A close logarithmic regression between photosynthesis rate (A) and g was present. For the first weeks of drought the decline in A was less pronounced than in g, thus increasing water use efficiency. Stomatal conductance during diurnal time-courses showed no consistent relationships with respect to either ABA or leaf water potential. throughout the experimental period dependence of g on leaf water status was evident from the tight correlation (r(2) = 0.88, P < 0.01) achieved between stomatal conductance and midday water potential, but the correlation was also high when comparing g with respect to ABA content in xylem sap (r(2) = 0.83, P < 0.001). However, the stomata from drought acclimated plants were apparently more sensitive to xylem ABA content. En aquest article es plantegen dues qüestions. La primera se centra en Pijoan com a agent d'art, aspecte molt poc conegut fins ara; mentre que en la segona part tracta de Pijoan com a escriptor d'art i la problemàtica que es va produir amb motiu de la seva intervenció en el llibre Les pintures romàniques de Catalunya dins la «Monumenta Cataloniae», col·lecció patrocinada per Francesc Cambó.Knowledge of the pathways of Catalan exiles as in the cases of Josep Pijoan Soteras, Francesc Cambó Batlle and Josep Gudiol Ricart, among others is fascinating because it permits understanding and evaluation of their personal itineraries while at the same time casting a dramatic light on Catalan culture of the epoch.     Una panoràmica sobre el gravat xilogràfic català del Sis-cents

    Nos proponemos reseñar la labor artística de algunos de los principales grabadores xilográficos catalanes del siglo XVII, como Llorenc Déu, los Abadal y Joan Jolis Santjaume. Su actividad como xilógrafos ayuda a configurar una parte de la cultura figurativa catalana de este período. Asimismo, también queremos poner de manifiesto que aunque en los ultimos años se han hecho numerosas aportaciones en el campo del grabado, pensamos que todavía falta bastante camino para tener una perspectiva correcta de la actividad artística de los grabadores catalanes. Durante el siglo XVll el grabado culto es el calcográfico, mientras que el grabado xilográfico queda circunscrito a los canales culturales mayoritarios. Frecuentemente la historiografía artística ha calificado el grabado sobre madera del siglo XVll como un arte en decadencia, afirmación muy exagerada, dado que en este período Europa dispone de un plantel de grabadores xilográficos de primera magnitud como Cristoffel van Sichem o Werner van der Valckert. Y en Catalunya sobresalen grabadores como los Abadal de Moia, o como los barceloneses Llorenc Déu y Joan Jolis, que sin ningún género de duda constituyen una excelente representación del grabado catalán en el Seiscientos.We review the artistic accomplishments of the principle Xylographic Catalan engravers of the seventeeth century, which include Llorenc Déu, The Abadals, and Joan Jolis. Their activity as xylographers during this period helps piece together a portion of the figurative Catalan culture. Additionally, we emphasize that even though the literature in this field has grown significantly in recent years, an accurate image of the Catalan engravers remains elusive. During the Seventeenth Century, calcography was viewed as a cultured form of engraving while xylography was an art from of the majority. Art history has repeatedly classified Seventeenth Century wood engravings as decadent art. We consider this an exaggeration dueto the fact that during this period Europe had a large number of excellent xylographers such as Cristoffel van Sichem or Werner van der Valckert. Excellent engravers in Catalonia included the Abadals from Moia, and Llorenq Déu and Joan Jolis from Barcelona, who without doubt constitute the most important representation of Seventeeth CenturyCatalan engraving
