    A Retention Model for Community College STEM Students

    The number of students attending community colleges that take advantage of transfer pathways to universities continues to rise. Therefore, there is a need to engage in academic research on these students and their attrition in order to identify areas to improve retention. Community colleges have a very diverse population and provide entry into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs, regardless of student high school preparedness. It is essential for these students to successfully transfer to universities and finish their STEM degrees to meet the global workforce demands. This research develops a predictive model for community college students for degree completion using the Mahalanobis Taguchi System and regression. Data collected from a Midwest community college over a five-year period in three specific associate degree programs will be used for the study. The study identified 92 students that completed a STEM degree within three years, while 730 students were not able to complete the degree within that period or at all. The research illuminates specific areas of concern related to community college students and better informs transfer institutions about this important sector of transfer students. Especially revealing is the important predictive factors traditionally found in research for STEM retention had very low correlation for this set of community college students. This research reinforces the need to investigate community college students more closely and through a different lens

    Investigation of physician assistants\u27 choice of rural or underserved practice and framing methods of recruitment and retention

    Objective: This dissertation analyzed one state\u27s physician assistant (PA) workforce focusing on recruitment and retention. The goal was to identify factors associated with Indiana PAs working in medically underserved, rural, and primary-care medicine. The study evaluated characteristics of PAs who chose initially to work in rural versus urban areas and who have continued to do so. From the literature and as a result of study outcomes, a framework was developed, upon which recommendations were made for effective methods of increasing and retaining the number of PAs in primary care within rural areas. Subjects: Data were obtained from applications for PA licensure submitted to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency between the years 2000 and 2010. Additionally, PAs working in Indiana who graduated during this period were surveyed. Methods: Descriptive statistics quantitatively defined the Indiana PA workforce. Survey questions to this population focused on provider upbringing, education, and specialization interest, as well as recruitment and retention to rural, primary-care, or underserved areas. Chi Square tests and logistic regression were used, where appropriate, to examine the influence of independent variables on the choice of practicing in rural, primary-care, and medically underserved areas. Based on these responses, recommendations were developed for strategies to increase the supply of physician assistants in rural areas. Findings: Among applicants for PA licensure in Indiana from 2000 to 2010, there were more females (70%) than males (30%), and the median age of applicants was 35 years. Respondent PAs predominantly worked in counties that were designated by the United States Department of Agriculture as metropolitan (91.3%) and largely in areas designated as Code 1 according to Rural-Urban Continuum Codes, the highest level of urbanicity. Additionally, more PAs worked in a specialty area (79%) than in primary care (21%). Chi Square analyses revealed significant relationships (p \u3c .05) between primary care and gender; educated outside of Indiana and working in an underserved area; and being born in a rural area and choosing to practice in a rural area. Binary logistic regression identified that female gender was predictive of the decision to practice in primary care, and birth in a rural area was predictive of current rural practice. In reflecting upon their first employment following training, 70 percent of respondents believed that the job offer was neither directly nor indirectly a result of having completed a clinical rotation at that particular site, or having worked with a particular preceptor, during their experiential training. A relationship was found between the respondents\u27 initial job location being urban and living in a metro location at the time of high school graduation. Finally, educational debt influenced males\u27 initial practice location and specialty but did not similarly affect choice of practice among females. Conclusions: There were several important characteristics of recently licensed PAs in Indiana that were identified in this study. Educational institutions, policymakers, and communities may increase recruitment and retention of PAs to rural and primary-care practice by actively identifying PAs who possess selected characteristics for the area of interest and providing incentives to reduce educational debt

    Sensitivity of Yeast Strains with Long G-Tails to Levels of Telomere-Bound Telomerase

    The Saccharomyces cerevisiae Pif1p helicase is a negative regulator of telomere length that acts by removing telomerase from chromosome ends. The catalytic subunit of yeast telomerase, Est2p, is telomere associated throughout most of the cell cycle, with peaks of association in both G1 phase (when telomerase is not active) and late S/G2 phase (when telomerase is active). The G1 association of Est2p requires a specific interaction between Ku and telomerase RNA. In mutants lacking this interaction, telomeres were longer in the absence of Pif1p than in the presence of wild-type PIF1, indicating that endogenous Pif1p inhibits the active S/G2 form of telomerase. Pif1p abundance was cell cycle regulated, low in G1 and early S phase and peaking late in the cell cycle. Low Pif1p abundance in G1 phase was anaphase-promoting complex dependent. Thus, endogenous Pif1p is unlikely to act on G1 bound Est2p. Overexpression of Pif1p from a non-cell cycle-regulated promoter dramatically reduced viability in five strains with impaired end protection (cdc13ā€“1, yku80Ī”, yku70Ī”, yku80ā€“1, and yku80ā€“4), all of which have longer single-strand G-tails than wild-type cells. This reduced viability was suppressed by deleting the EXO1 gene, which encodes a nuclease that acts at compromised telomeres, suggesting that the removal of telomerase by Pif1p exposed telomeres to further C-strand degradation. Consistent with this interpretation, depletion of Pif1p, which increases the amount of telomere-bound telomerase, suppressed the temperature sensitivity of yku70Ī” and cdc13ā€“1 cells. Furthermore, eliminating the pathway that recruits Est2p to telomeres in G1 phase in a cdc13ā€“1 strain also reduced viability. These data suggest that wild-type levels of telomere-bound telomerase are critical for the viability of strains whose telomeres are already susceptible to degradation

    Report on the May-June 2002 Englebright Lake deep coring campaign

    This report describes the May-June 2002 Englebright Lake coring project. Englebright Lake is a 14-km-long reservoir on the Yuba River of northern California, impounded by Englebright Dam, which was completed in 1940. The sediments were cored to assess the current conditions in the reservoir as part of the California Bay-Delta Authorityā€™s Upper Yuba River Studies Program. Sediment was collected using both hydraulic-piston and rotational coring equipment mounted on a floating drilling platform. Thirty boreholes were attempted at 7 sites spaced along the longitudinal axis of the reservoir. Complete sedimentary sections were recovered from 20 boreholes at 6 sites. In total, 335 m of sediment was cored, with 86% average recovery. The core sections (each up to 1.5 m long) were processed using a standard set of laboratory techniques, including geophysical logging of physical properties, splitting, visual descriptions, digital photography, and initial subsampling. This report presents the results of these analyses in a series of stratigraphic columns. Using the observed stratigraphy as a guide, several series of subsamples were collected for various sedimentologic, geochemical, and geochronological analyses. The results of laboratory analyses of most of these subsamples will be presented in future reports and articles

    Beyond Spheroids and Discs: Classifications of CANDELS Galaxy Structure at 1.4 < z < 2 via Principal Component Analysis

    Important but rare and subtle processes driving galaxy morphology and star-formation may be missed by traditional spiral, elliptical, irregular or S\'ersic bulge/disk classifications. To overcome this limitation, we use a principal component analysis of non-parametric morphological indicators (concentration, asymmetry, Gini coefficient, M20M_{20}, multi-mode, intensity and deviation) measured at rest-frame BB-band (corresponding to HST/WFC3 F125W at 1.4 1010MāŠ™10^{10} M_{\odot}) galaxy morphologies. Principal component analysis (PCA) quantifies the correlations between these morphological indicators and determines the relative importance of each. The first three principal components (PCs) capture āˆ¼\sim75 per cent of the variance inherent to our sample. We interpret the first principal component (PC) as bulge strength, the second PC as dominated by concentration and the third PC as dominated by asymmetry. Both PC1 and PC2 correlate with the visual appearance of a central bulge and predict galaxy quiescence. PC1 is a better predictor of quenching than stellar mass, as as good as other structural indicators (S\'ersic-n or compactness). We divide the PCA results into groups using an agglomerative hierarchical clustering method. Unlike S\'ersic, this classification scheme separates compact galaxies from larger, smooth proto-elliptical systems, and star-forming disk-dominated clumpy galaxies from star-forming bulge-dominated asymmetric galaxies. Distinguishing between these galaxy structural types in a quantitative manner is an important step towards understanding the connections between morphology, galaxy assembly and star-formation.Comment: 31 pages, 24 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Multivariate Computational Analysis of Gamma Delta T Cell Inhibitory Receptor Signatures Reveals the Divergence of Healthy and ART-Suppressed HIV+ Aging

    Even with effective viral control, HIV-infected individuals are at a higher risk for morbidities associated with older age than the general population, and these serious non-AIDS events (SNAEs) track with plasma inflammatory and coagulation markers. The cell subsets driving inflammation in aviremic HIV infection are not yet elucidated. Also, whether ART-suppressed HIV infection causes premature induction of the inflammatory events found in uninfected elderly or if a novel inflammatory network ensues when HIV and older age co-exist is unclear. In this study we measured combinational expression of five inhibitory receptors (IRs) on seven immune cell subsets and 16 plasma markers from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and plasma samples, respectively, from a HIV and Aging cohort comprised of ART-suppressed HIV-infected and uninfected controls stratified by age (ā‰¤35 or ā‰„50 years old). For data analysis, multiple multivariate computational algorithms [cluster identification, characterization, and regression (CITRUS), partial least squares regression (PLSR), and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA)] were used to determine if immune parameter disparities can distinguish the subject groups and to investigate if there is a cross-impact of aviremic HIV and age on immune signatures. IR expression on gamma delta (Ī³Ī“) T cells exclusively separated HIV+ subjects from controls in CITRUS analyses and secretion of inflammatory cytokines and cytotoxic mediators from Ī³Ī“ T cells tracked with TIGIT expression among HIV+ subjects. Also, plasma markers predicted the percentages of TIGIT+ Ī³Ī“ T cells in subjects with and without HIV in PSLR models, and a PLS-DA model of Ī³Ī“ T cell IR signatures and plasma markers significantly stratified all four of the subject groups (uninfected younger, uninfected older, HIV+ younger, and HIV+ older). These data implicate Ī³Ī“ T cells as an inflammatory driver in ART-suppressed HIV infection and provide evidence of distinct ā€œinflamm-agingā€ processes with and without ART-suppressed HIV infection
