    The Effects of Frequency of Usage on Pre-recognition Responses and Recognition Thresholds of Words

    Tachistoscopic presentation of words has been widely used in the study of the relationship between personality variables and perception. The procedure is to present words drawn from relevant meaning classes, such as needs or values, for· increasing periods of exposure until the S is able to correctly identify the stimulus words. The results of several such experiments (3, 4, 8, 10) lend support to the view that personality factors are important determiners of an individual’s sensitivity to visually presented stimuli. However, since most of these studies have used verbal report as the index of perceptual sensitivity, many investigators have become increasingly concerned with the effects of verbal learning variables on recognition thresholds. Particular attention has recently been focused on the contribution of frequency of usage of words to variations in these recognition thresholds (5, 6, 7, 11, 12)

    Anxiety as an important determinant of behavior has been receiving increasing attention from both the clinician (5, 6, 15, 19, 23) and the experimental psychologist ( 2, 4, 8, 21) . Several measures of anxiety have been developed (6, 7, 9, 22) in order to study the relationship between anxiety as a personality variable and behavior in a variety of experimental situations. The purpose of this investigation was to study the interrelationships among three of the more widely used anxiety scales.     Fluorescence-based Sensing of 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene (TNT) Using a Multi-channeled Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) Microimmunosensor

    Fluorescence immunoassays employing monoclonal antibodies directed against the explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) were conducted in a multi-channel microimmunosensor. The multi-channel microimmunosensor was prepared in poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) via hot embossing from a brass molding tool. The multi-channeled microfluidic device was sol-gel coated to generate a siloxane surface that provided a scaffold for antibody immobilization. AlexaFluor-cadaverine-trinitrobenzene (AlexaFluor-Cad-TNB) was used as the reporter molecule in a displacement immunoassay. The limit of detection was 1–10 ng/mL (ppb) with a linear dynamic range that covered three orders of magnitude.     The Golden Rule:Interfaith Peacemaking and the Charter for Compassion

    The Charter for Compassion has been signed by over two million people from around the world and partnered with hundreds of interfaith organizations and cities seeking to put into practice the Golden Rule, common to the main faith traditions, of doing unto others as you would be done by. This article sets the Charter within the context of a post secular international society and faith-based diplomacy, in which religious interreligious initiatives emerge as serious, rather than peripheral, actors in developing sustainable peace making through bottom-up approaches. The article critically engages with the Charter's claim that ‘any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate’ while accepting that peaceful interpretations of scriptures are helpful to peace processes where religious actors are involved. The article explores the claims of the Charter for Compassion International as they seek to make peace through compassion, before concluding that the Charter for Compassion is a long-term project aimed at changing hearts and minds but has had limited substantive impact to date
