    Management of Bedded-Pack Manure From Swine Hoop Structures: 1998 Results

    Hoop structures are an increasingly popular alternative to conventional confinement facilities for swine production. Animals bed and dung on a bedded manure pack, which generates heat and contributes to animal comfort during winter months. As it comes directly out of the hoop structure, the high degree of variability in the bedded pack makes it difficult to predict manure nutrient contributions to crop fertilization needs. Although manure from the dunging area has clear fertilizer value, the high-carbon (C) lownitrogen (N) status of the drier bedding may lead to nitrogen immobilization and crop stress if applied during or immediately prior to the growing season. This study examined the distribution of moisture, N, and temperature of the bedded pack inside a hoop, and evaluated the effect of 4 composting strategies on manure nutrient levels and uniformity, mass, volume, and moisture content. A simple loader built pile with no turning appeared to most effectively reduce nitrogen losses, but building piles with a manure spreader or frequent turning provided benefits in volume, mass, and moisture reduction. Composting did not consistently improve the nutrient variability of the manure, and additional studies are planned to address this concern

    Remedying Foreign Language Anxiety through CLIL? A mixed-methods study with pupils, teachers and parents

    [EN] Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) is an important challenge for language learning. In Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), subjects are taught in a language that is not the learners’ mother tongue; a context that could reduce FLA. This study analyzes whether CLIL can positively influence FLA and which characteristics determine its presence in a CLIL context. Data were collected from 225 pupils, their parents and teachers in Flemish-speaking Belgium. Quantitative and qualitative methods were applied, with pre- and post-measurement. Results indicate that CLIL can indeed positively influence FLA. Pupils experienced growth in their self-confidence to use the foreign language. Their teachers observed more active participation, especially from more silent and less proficient pupils. The parents also noticed an increase in communicative attitudes. We found eight variables to have an influence. The foreign language used in CLIL appeared to have the most important influence besides the pupils’ interest in language learning and their personality traits, extraversion and agreeableness.Simons, M.; Vanhees, C.; Smits, T.; Van De Putte, K.     Treatment-associated imaging changes in newly diagnosed MGMTMGMT promoter-methylated glioblastoma undergoing chemoradiation with or without cilengitide

    Background: Radiological progression may originate from progressive disease (PD) or pseudoprogression/treatment-associated changes. We assessed radiological progression in O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter-methylated glioblastoma treated with standard-of-care chemoradiotherapy with or without the integrin inhibitor cilengitide according to the modified response assessment in neuro-oncology (RANO) criteria of 2017. Methods: Patients with ≥ 3 follow-up MRIs were included. Preliminary PD was defined as a ≥ 25% increase of the sum of products of perpendicular diameters (SPD) of a new or increasing lesion compared to baseline. PD required a second ≥25% increase of the SPD. Treatment-associated changes require stable or regressing disease after preliminary PD. Results: Of the 424 evaluable patients, 221 patients (52%) were randomized into the cilengitide and 203 patients (48%) into the control arm. After chemoradiation with or without cilengitide, preliminary PD occurred in 274 patients (65%) during available follow-up, and 88 of these patients (32%) had treatment-associated changes, whereas 67 patients (25%) had PD. The remaining 119 patients (43%) had no further follow-up after preliminary PD. Treatment-associated changes were more common in the cilengitide arm than in the standard-of-care arm (24% vs. 17%; relative risk, 1.3; 95% CI, 1.004–1.795; P = .047). Treatment-associated changes occurred mainly during the first 6 months after RT (54% after 3 months vs. 13% after 6 months). Conclusions: With the modified RANO criteria, the rate of treatment-associated changes was low compared to previous studies in MGMT promoter-methylated glioblastoma. This rate was higher after cilengitide compared to standard-of-care treatment. Confirmatory scans, as recommended in the modified RANO criteria, were not always available reflecting current clinical practice

    Extending the voltage window in the characterization of electrical transport of large-area molecular junctions

    A large bias window is required to discriminate between different transport models in large-area molecular junctions. Under continuous DC bias, the junctions irreversibly break down at fields over 9 MV/cm. We show that, by using pulse measurements, we can reach electrical fields of 35 MV/cm before degradation. The breakdown voltage is shown to depend logarithmically on both duty cycle and pulse width. A tentative interpretation is presented based on electrolysis in the polymeric top electrode. Expanding the bias window using pulse measurements unambiguously shows that the electrical transport exhibits not an exponential but a power-law dependence on bias.     Perfusion imaging with arterial spin labeling (ASL)-MRI predicts malignant progression in low‑grade (WHO grade II) gliomas

    PURPOSE: Predicting malignant progression of grade II gliomas would allow for earlier initiation of treatment. The hypothesis for this single-centre, case-control study was that the perfusion signal on ASL-MRI predicts such malignant progression in the following 12 months. METHODS: Consecutive patients with the following criteria were included: ≥ 18 years, grade II glioma (biopsied or resected) and an ASL-MRI 6-12 months prior to malignant progression (cases) or stable disease (controls). Malignant progression was defined either radiologically (new T1w-contrast enhancement) or histologically (neurosurgical tissue sampling). Three controls were matched with each case. Some patients served as their own control by using earlier imaging. The ASL-MRIs were reviewed by two neuroradiologists and classified as positive (hyper-intense or iso-intense compared to cortical grey matter) or negative (hypo-intense). In patients with epilepsy, a neurologist reviewed clinicoradiological data to exclude peri-ictal pseudoprogression. The statistical analysis included diagnostic test properties, a Cohen's Kappa interrater reliability coefficient and stratification for previous radiotherapy. RESULTS: Eleven cases (median age = 48, IQR = 43-50 years) and 33 controls (43, 27-50 years) were included. Malignant progression appeared at 37 months (median, IQR = 17-44) after first surgery. Thirty ASL-MRIs were assessed as negative and 14 as positive. None of the MRIs showed signs of peri-ictal pseudoprogression. ASL significantly predicted subsequent malignant progression (sensitivity = 73%; specificity = 82%; OR = 12; 95%-CI = 2.4-59.1; p = 0.002). The interrater reliability coefficient was 0.65. In stratified analysis, ASL-MRI predicted malignant progression both in patients with previous radiotherapy and in those without (Mantel-Haenszel test, p = 0.003). CONCLUSION: Perfusion imaging with ASL-MRI can predict malignant progression within 12 months in patients with grade II glioma

    Genetic lack of interleukin 12 receptor β1 (IL-12Rβ1) surface expression predisposes to severe infections by poorly pathogenic mycobacteria or Salmonella and causes strongly decreased, but not completely abrogated, interferon (IFN)-γ production. To study IL-12Rβ1–independent residual IFN-γ production, we have generated mycobacterium–specific T cell clones (TCCs) from IL-12Rβ1–deficient individuals. All TCCs displayed a T helper type 1 phenotype and the majority responded to IL-12 by increased IFN-γ production and proliferative responses upon activation. This response to IL-12 could be further augmented by exogenous IL-18. IL-12Rβ2 was found to be normally expressed in the absence of IL-12Rβ1, and could be upregulated by IFN-α. Expression of IL-12Rβ2 alone, however, was insufficient to induce signal transducer and activator of transcription (Stat)4 activation in response to IL-12, whereas IFN-α/IFN-αR ligation resulted in Stat4 activation in both control and IL-12Rβ1–deficient cells. IL-12 failed to upregulate cell surface expression of IL-18R, integrin α6, and IL-12Rβ2 on IL-12Rβ1–deficient cells, whereas this was normal on control cells. IL-12–induced IFN-γ production in IL-12Rβ1–deficient T cells could be inhibited by the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP) kinase inhibitor SB203580 and the MAP kinase kinase (MEK) 1/2 inhibitor U0126, suggesting involvement of MAP kinases in this alternative, Stat4-independent, IL-12 signaling pathway

    Development and Validation of the Behavioral Tendencies Questionnaire

    At a fundamental level, taxonomy of behavior and behavioral tendencies can be described in terms of approach, avoid, or equivocate (i.e., neither approach nor avoid). While there are numerous theories of personality, temperament, and character, few seem to take advantage of parsimonious taxonomy. The present study sought to implement this taxonomy by creating a questionnaire based on a categorization of behavioral temperaments/tendencies first identified in Buddhist accounts over fifteen hundred years ago. Items were developed using historical and contemporary texts of the behavioral temperaments, described as “Greedy/Faithful”, “Aversive/Discerning”, and “Deluded/Speculative”. To both maintain this categorical typology and benefit from the advantageous properties of forced-choice response format (e.g., reduction of response biases), binary pairwise preferences for items were modeled using Latent Class Analysis (LCA). One sample (n1 = 394) was used to estimate the item parameters, and the second sample (n2 = 504) was used to classify the participants using the established parameters and cross-validate the classification against multiple other measures. The cross-validated measure exhibited good nomothetic span (construct-consistent relationships with related measures) that seemed to corroborate the ideas present in the original Buddhist source documents. The final 13-block questionnaire created from the best performing items (the Behavioral Tendencies Questionnaire or BTQ) is a psychometrically valid questionnaire that is historically consistent, based in behavioral tendencies, and promises practical and clinical utility particularly in settings that teach and study meditation practices such as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

    Navigation and Exploration in 3D-Game Automated Play Testing

    To enable automated software testing, the ability to automatically navigate to a state of interest and to explore all, or at least sufficient number of, instances of such a state is fundamental. When testing a computer game the problem has an extra dimension, namely the virtual world where the game is played on. This world often plays a dominant role in constraining which logical states are reachable, and how to reach them. So, any automated testing algorithm for computer games will inevitably need a layer that deals with navigation on a virtual world. Unlike e.g. navigating through the GUI of a typical web-based application, navigating over a virtual world is much more challenging. This paper discusses how concepts from geometry and graph-based path finding can be applied in the context of game testing to solve the problem of automated navigation and exploration. As a proof of concept, the paper also briefly discusses the implementation of the proposed approach
