Half of Women in New Hampshire Have Experienced Sexual Harassment at Work

    Get PDF
In this brief, authors Kristin Smith, Sharyn Potter, and Jane Stapleton discuss the results of a 2018 Granite State Poll survey conducted by the University of New Hampshire on workplace sexual harassment in New Hampshire. They report that over half of women and nearly one-quarter of men in New Hampshire have been victims of sexual harassment at their workplaces during their lifetimes. Women are more likely to state they suffered work-related consequences (for example, financial loss, being fired or demoted) than men, but similar shares reported quitting their jobs as a result of the harassment. Sexual harassment is problematic for the workplace, as it reduces worker morale and job satisfaction, diminishes productivity, and increases absenteeism and worker withdrawal. The authors suggest that employers would do well to invest in prevention, such as bystander intervention training, and encourage victims’ use of supports to mitigate the negative effects of workplace sexual harassment

Public relations and governmental public health services: analysis of the health education programs in three Massachusetts health units

Thesis (M.S.)--Boston UniversityStatement of Problem: Problems of health are of personal and social concern. Yet, unless people are individually involved, health problems fail to arouse their interest. Thus, to protect the general welfare of society, government must provide public health services. And bringing the need for such services to the attention of the public is the function of health education. With this latter objective the importance of public relations emerges -- the communicating of good health practices to the desired audience at the proper time in the most effective way. Conclusions: The findings, analyzed under public relations criteria, indicate that the health educators interviewed appreciate public relations; however, they do not understand all of its implications. They still regard it as a somewhat unscientific function, emphasizing the human relations aspect. In addition, it is considered as a service rather than staff function. Finally, public relations is considered valuable as an aid to health education programs, but not as a practice in itself, grounded in philosophy of social responsibility. [TRUNCATED

A qualitative study exploring the experience and motivations of UK Samaritan volunteers: "Why do we do it?"

Telephone helplines offer a valued service for those in distress. However, little research has explored the experience of helpline volunteers. Through semi-structured interviews, in this article we explore the volunteering experiences of nine long-term UK Samaritan volunteers. Interviews were analysed using Interpretive Interactionism. The analysis highlighted that this volunteering impacted participants' experience of their sense of self. The decision to volunteer was framed as part of a search for personal meaning, tied to experiences of loss and reparation. They reflected positively on their volunteer identity, but highlighted tensions between a sense of vocation and the experience of care burden. The Samaritan Community also offered a sense of belonging and social support. They experienced involvement as personally meaningful, enabling the construction of a positive self-identity

    Water Play

The inclusion of activities to develop sensory awareness, spatial thinking, and physical dexterity, operationalized through hands-on science lessons such as water play, have long been part of early childhood education. This practical article addresses Next Generation Science Standards K-2 ETS1-3 and K-2 ETS1-2 by having four-year-old prekindergarten students direct the path of water on a vertical pegboard water table with strategically-placed, attached plastic cups with holes drilled into them that leak streams of water into each other. Students enhanced their retelling of the story of the Billy Goats Gruff by placing student-made watercolor artwork along the path of the water, which represented the stream in the story. Students devised a variety of working solutions to guide the path of the water from the upper right to the lower left of the vertical water table. Students grew in confidence and skill as they voiced and tested their solutions. They also enjoyed retelling the story of the Billy Goats Gruff from the beginning of the water stream to the end, using the illustrations they had made. Later, students created their own challenges on the water table. Through play and exploration, students were able to test their spatial designs, incorporate literacy and art, and work on social-emotional skills while being actively engaged in their endeavors

Zebras and Jaguars, Oh My! Integrating Science and Engineering Standards with Art during Prekindergarten Block Time

This study considered how arts integration impacted preschoolers concerning the students’ acquisition, understanding, and retention of information about animal habitats. This current investigation used control and experimental conditions to determine the effects of art integration during students’ block building of animal habitats and their subsequent recollections of their work; this activity also incorporated the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and National Core Art Standards. The two NGSS standards utilized in the study are K-2-ETSI-1 and K-2-ETST-2. Overall, combined child-reported correct animal and habitat characteristics gain scores on the posttest and distal posttest showed significant differences between the two conditions, favoring the experimental arts-integrated condition with a medium effect size in both cases. These promising results from this study showed the increase not only in knowledge about animals and their habitats, but in creativity as the students integrated art materials into a traditional block center to create their animal habitats

StichwörterDiptera, Sciaroidea, Sciaridae, Bradysia, Cosmosciara, Hyperlasion, Lycoriella, Pseudolycoriella, Afrotropical Region, South Atlantic, Tristan da Cunha archipelago, overview, distribution, redescription, new records.Black Fungus Gnats (Diptera: Sciaridae) were collected with Malaise traps on Tristan da Cunha and Nightingale islands in the South Atlantic. Four species were identified of which Lycoriella sativae (Johannsen, 1912) is already known from literature. For three others – Bradysia tilicola (Loew, 1850), Hyperlasion viridiventris (Frey, 1945) and Pseudolycoriella setigera (Hardy, 1960) – this is the first report from this archipelago. To date, 8 species are known from this group of islands. They belong to the genera Bradysia Winnertz (3 species), Cosmosciara Frey (1), Hyperlasion Schmitz (1), Lycoriella Frey (2) and Pseudolycoriella Menzel & Mohrig (1). The male genitalia for 7 particularly well known sciarid species from the archipelago are already illustrated but until now only poorly preserved type specimens of Hyperlasion viridiventris (Frey) from the Azores were known. Both male and female have been redescribed from the new material. An overview is also given of the existing sciarid records from the islands. The published data were analysed and compared with the new records.KeywordsDiptera, Sciaroidea, Sciaridae, Bradysia, Cosmosciara, Hyperlasion, Lycoriella, Pseudolycoriella, Afrotropical Region, South Atlantic, Tristan da Cunha archipelago, overview, distribution, redescription, new records

Families Redefined: Kinship Groups that Deserve Benefits

    Get PDF
In Families Redefined: Kinship Groups that Deserve Benefits, the authors examine 1) the nature of kinship families, 2) the benefits accorded to married couples, 3) kinship families that lack protection and benefits, 4) the impact of denying kinship families protection and benefits, 5) the use of contract law in kinship relationships, and 6) using legislation to benefit kinship relationships. This exploration of expanding family law protections to kinship groups addresses a series of interrelated topics. The first two sections of the article explore the characteristics and creation of kinship families in different societies. The third section addresses the legal benefits provided by marriage, while the fourth and fifth sections examine, respectively, the types of kinship relationships that should have similar benefits and the effect of denying such benefits. The next two sections present legal solutions that propose using contract law and adopting legislation to provide legal protection and benefits to kinship units. Accordingly, the article advocates for the expansion of legal concepts of family to include kinship relationships by comparing the treatment of these issues in various states and nations. In this manner, the authors support a new definition of family that goes beyond conjugal arrangements
