    Selective Transcription in Response to an Inflammatory Stimulus

    An inflammatory response is initiated by the temporally controlled activation of genes encoding a broad range of regulatory and effector proteins. A central goal is to devise strategies for the selective modulation of proinflammatory gene transcription, to allow the suppression of genes responsible for inflammation-associated pathologies while maintaining a robust host response to microbial infection. Toward this goal, recent studies have revealed an unexpected level of diversity in the mechanisms by which chromatin structure and individual transcription factors contribute to the selective regulation of inflammatory genes

    The Changing Demand for Culture: Estimation of Cultural Elasticities

    Much past research on the nature of demand for recreation or cultural activities has been either economic models based on unrealistic assumptions about willingness-to-pay or sociological models that fail to provide an in-depth analysis of the forces actually affecting the decision to participate. This paper presents an attempt to combine some of the strengths of the traditional economic and sociological methods, while avoiding some of their weaknesses. The method developed produces an index called a cultural elasticity that quantitatively indicates how rates of participation maw be expected to change when certain economic and sociological characteristics in the population change. A numerical example is provided using a recent Canadian national survey on performing arts audiences. Strengths and limitations in the approach are also identified

    Age-Related Gene Expression Differences in Monocytes from Human Neonates, Young Adults, and Older Adults.

    A variety of age-related differences in the innate and adaptive immune systems have been proposed to contribute to the increased susceptibility to infection of human neonates and older adults. The emergence of RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) provides an opportunity to obtain an unbiased, comprehensive, and quantitative view of gene expression differences in defined cell types from different age groups. An examination of ex vivo human monocyte responses to lipopolysaccharide stimulation or Listeria monocytogenes infection by RNA-seq revealed extensive similarities between neonates, young adults, and older adults, with an unexpectedly small number of genes exhibiting statistically significant age-dependent differences. By examining the differentially induced genes in the context of transcription factor binding motifs and RNA-seq data sets from mutant mouse strains, a previously described deficiency in interferon response factor-3 activity could be implicated in most of the differences between newborns and young adults. Contrary to these observations, older adults exhibited elevated expression of inflammatory genes at baseline, yet the responses following stimulation correlated more closely with those observed in younger adults. Notably, major differences in the expression of constitutively expressed genes were not observed, suggesting that the age-related differences are driven by environmental influences rather than cell-autonomous differences in monocyte development

    The role of kelp species as biogenic habitat formers in coastal marine ecosystems

    Kelps are ecologically important primary producers and ecosystem engineers, and play a central role in structuring nearshore temperate habitats. They play an important role in nutrient cycling, energy capture and transfer, and provide biogenic coastal defence. Kelps also provide extensive substrata for colonising organisms, ameliorate conditions for understorey assemblages, and provide three-dimensional habitat structure for a vast array of marine plants and animals, including a number of commercially important species. Here, we review and synthesize existing knowledge on the functioning of kelp species as biogenic habitat providers. We examine biodiversity patterns associated with kelp holdfasts, stipes and blades, as well as the wider understorey habitat, and search for generality between kelp species and biogeographic regions. Environmental factors influencing biogenic habitat provision and the structure of associated assemblages are considered, as are current threats to kelp-dominated ecosystems. Despite considerable variability between species and regions, kelps are key habitat-forming species that support elevated levels of biodiversity, diverse and abundant assemblages and facilitate trophic linkages. Enhanced appreciation and better management of kelp forests are vital for ensuring sustainability of ecological goods and services derived from temperate marine ecosystems

    Moving Students to the Center through Collaborative Documents in the Classroom

    Collaborative document creation allows groups of people to create and edit text in a shared space, and educators across all subject areas have embraced these tools in their classes. Library instructors are no exception—the authors have used collaborative documents with students in multiple instructional settings. We believe that collaborative documents can embody critical pedagogy in the library classroom. Creating and editing collaborative documents can acknowledge students’ prior experiences with research and the library and de-center the library instructor as the sole research expert in the room

Often the two – interdisciplinary teaching and experiential learning – co-exist. Yet even when they do not, both practices model how to think in myriad ways and to notice how knowledge is constructed. As our winter 2019 issue makes clear, interdisciplinary teaching and learning and experiential learning often begin with questions.
