Prolegomenon for a Body-Oriented Research Method in Psychology

    Get PDF
Mainstream psychology adheres to a reductionist perspective on the body which is founded on a biomedical framework. In this view, the bodys functioning is investigated as merely physiological correlates of mental processes. To fully understand psychological phenomena, there is a need to address the issue of the body at all levels of the research process. The main objective of this thesis is to offer a prolegomenon for a research method in psychology which would systematically work with the bodily expression through gesture and movement for understanding psychological questions. First, I discuss historical and theoretical underpinnings of body image scholarship, nonverbal communication work, phenomenology, and feminist theory. Second, I examine the existing methods from applied fields of body psychotherapy and dance practices. Finally, I provide a possible format of the body-oriented method (BOM), including the stages of data collection, data description, data interpretation, and representation of results

EMOTIVE SPEECH ACTS AND THEIR DISCOURSE MODIFICATIONS IN THE LITERARY TEXT

This article focuses on three related theoretical problems: classification of expressive speech acts that till present remains a highly disputable issue of linguistic pragmatics, specificity of emotives as a type of expressives, and the patterns of emotives’ modifications in the current discourse space as it is represented in the literary text. The authors suggest a classification of expressive speech acts built at the intersection of the cognitive (semantic), communicative and semiotic planes that demonstrate distinctions between the classes of behavitives and emotives and between their sub-classes. It is further presumed that emotives, when used in discourse, get modified in accordance with regular patterns compatible with the cognitive operations of elaboration, extension, questioning, and combining described in different cognitive linguistic conceptions. This presumption is confirmed via analysis of positive emotives portrayed in the literary text which, besides the character’s speech proper, describes the other discourse aspects relevant for the illocutionary meaning of a speech act. The patterns of discourse modifications exhibited by positive emotives as a congeneric sub-class are considered to be relevant for the other sub-classes of emotives – negative, bi-polar and ambivalent

    Nei-like 1 (NEIL1) excises 5-carboxylcytosine directly and stimulates TDG-mediated 5-formyl and 5-carboxylcytosine excision

Thymine DNA glycosylase (TDG) and Nei-like 1 (NEIL1) have both been implicated in the base excision repair step of active DNA demethylation. The robust glycosylase activity of TDG on DNA substrates containing 5-formylcytosine (5fC) or 5-carboxylcytosine (5caC) is universally accepted, but the mode of action of NEIL1 is still debated. Based on genetic experiments, it has been suggested that NEIL1 acts redundantly with TDG and excises 5fC and 5caC directly. However, this result has been disputed, and it was suggested instead that NEIL1 is recruited by the monofunctional TDG for the 2′-deoxyribose excision step. Using purified human NEIL1 and its catalytically impaired P2T and E3Q variants as controls, we detect NEIL1 activity on 5caC, but not a 5fC containing dsDNA substrate. We confirm direct NEIL1 TDG binding and NEIL1 mediated 2′ deoxyribose excision downstream of TDG glycosylase activity. NEIL1 acts not only downstream of TDG, but also enhances TDG activity on 5fC or 5caC containing DNA. NEIL1 mediated enhancement of the TDG glycosylase activity is substrate specifc and does not occur for dsDNA with a T/G mismatch

Hepatic blood flow in patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis

This research is devoted to studying of hepatic blood flow in patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis (ALC). The presence of endothelial dysfunction (ED) in cirrhotic patients directly correlates with the diameter of portal vein (r = 0,673) and with the level of nitrogen monoxide (r = -0,821) (p <0.05) and the indicator endothelium dependent vasodilation (EDVD) (r = -0,657). So, ED is an additional independent predictor of portal hypertension (PH) forming in patients with ALC

The role of joint stock companies in the structural change of Ukraine’s economy

Motivation: The corporate sector occupies a special place in the country’s economy and international economic relations. Large joint stock companies (JSCs) are the basis of the country’s economic potential, as they largely form the budgets of individual communities and the state, provide jobs, create networks of connections with small and medium-sized businesses, etc. The study of the relationship between the corporatization of enterprises and structural changes in the economy of Ukraine will allow to determine the socio-economic effect of the activities of JSCs.Aim: The research aimed to identify the socio-economic effect of the development of the corporate sector in the economy of Ukraine and justification of the expediency of government regulation of foreign economic activity of JSCs.Results: The study’s results show a capital accumulation and the dominance of JSCs in low-tech and raw-material sectors. The authors’ findings established that the corporatization process included the transformation of state assets into JSCs and the creation of new financial and industrial conglomerates, mainly in the mining industry and the production of agricultural raw materials. Comparison and generalization of statistical data are carried out as to the nature of foreign economic activities of JSCs. The study identifies a change in the distribution of commodity items towards increase in the share of agricultural raw materials and a tendency towards the reduction of technological chains. It is concluded about descending structural changes and reduction of the technological level of exports
