    Stabilization of Ge-rich defect complexes originating from E centers in Si1- xGex:P

    Thermal evolution of vacancy complexes was studied in P-doped ([P]=10 exp 18 cm exp −3) proton irradiated Si1−xGex with Ge contents of 10%, 20%, and 30% in the range of 250–350 °C using positron annihilation spectroscopy. The radiation damage recovers in the course of anneals but the final state differs from that in as-grown samples indicating the presence of small Ge clusters in the samples, contrary to the initially random Ge distribution. The activation energy for the annealing process was estimated to be 1.4±0.3 eV and attributed to the dissociation energy of the vacancy-phosphorus-germanium (V-P-Ge) complex.Peer reviewe

    The Structure of the [Zn_In - V_P] Defect Complex in Zn Doped InP

    We study the structure, the formation and binding energies and the transfer levels of the zinc-phosphorus vacancy complex [Zn_In - V_P] in Zn doped p-type InP, as a function of the charge, using plane wave ab initio DFT-LDA calculations in a 64 atom supercell. We find a binding energy of 0.39 eV for the complex, which is neutral in p-type material, the 0/-1 transfer level lying 0.50 eV above the valence band edge, all in agreement with recent positron annihilation experiments. This indicates that, whilst the formation of phosphorus vacancies (V_P) may be involved in carrier compensation in heavily Zn doped material, the formation of Zn-vacancy complexes is not. Regarding the structure: for charge states Q=+6 to -4 the Zn atom is in an sp^2 bonded DX position and electrons added/removed go to/come from the remaining dangling bonds on the triangle of In atoms. This reduces the effective vacancy volume monatonically as electrons are added to the complex, also in agreement with experiment. The reduction occurs through a combination of increased In-In bonding and increased Zn-In electrostatic attraction. In addition, for certain charge states we find complex Jahn-Teller behaviour in which up to three different structures, (with the In triangle dimerised, antidimerised or symmetric) are stable and are close to degenerate. We are able to predict and successfully explain the structural behaviour of this complex using a simple tight binding model.Comment: 10 pages text (postscript) plus 8 figures (jpeg).     Environmental influences on Norwegian spring-spawning herring (<i>Clupea harengus</i> L.) larvae reveal recent constraints in recruitment success

    The lack of any abundant recruiting year class of Norwegian spring-spawning (NSS) herring between 2005 and 2015 contributed to an approximate reduction of 40% in the spawning-stock biomass since 2009, i.e. from 7 to 4 million tonnes. Warming of the North Atlantic is suggested to contribute to this reduction in recruitment. In the past, a warm phase induced by a positive Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) in the North Atlantic was positively correlated to the NSS herring stock size. Recent unprecedented ocean warming in the Norwegian Sea ecosystem, besides elevated temperatures due to a positive AMO, seems to be outside optimal environmental conditions for early life history stages of NSS herring. We analysed 28 years of survey data using generalized additive models to reconstruct environmental conditions for drifting yolksac and preflexion stage larvae. Our results indicate that strong recruitment years were more likely when the larvae occurred simultaneously with a negative AMO during positive temperature anomalies. The transition from yolksac stages towards preflexion stages occurred while there was a slow increase in water temperature during the larval drift. Weak recruitment years generally occurred when larvae experienced elevated temperatures during the life stage transition under a positive AMO. These results augment evidence that the historical positive relationship between AMO and stock dynamics is reversed between 1988 and 2015. Albeit not implying any specific mechanistic biological interactions, we can assume that the unprecedented warming has modified the ecosystem drivers that negatively affect drifting larvae. Since 2016, the North Atlantic is shifting into a negative AMO phase, possibly resulting in the 10-year recruitment suppression of NSS herring ending soon.publishedVersio

    Phenomenological model for the remanent magnetization of dilute quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets

    We present a phenomenological model for the remanent magnetization at low temperatures in the quasi-one-dimensional dilute antiferromagnets CH_{3}NH_{3}Mn_{1-x}Cd_{x} Cl_{3}\cdot 2H_{2}O and (CH_{3})_{2}NH_{2}Mn_{1-x}Cd_{x}Cl_{3}\cdot 2H_{2}O. The model assumes the existence of uncompensated magnetic moments induced in the odd-sized segments generated along the Mn(^{2+}) chains upon dilution. These moments are further assumed to correlate ferromagnetically after removal of a cooling field. Using a (mean-field) linear-chain approximation and reasonable set of model parameters, we are able to reproduce the approximate linear temperature dependence observed for the remanent magnetization in the real compounds.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; final version to appear in Physical Review

    Multi-interaction mean-field renormalization group

    We present an extension of the previously proposed mean-field renormalization method to model Hamiltonians which are characterized by more than just one type of interaction. The method rests on scaling assumptions about the magnetization of different sublattices of the given lattice and it generates as many flow equations as coupling constants without arbitrary truncations on the renormalized Hamiltonian. We obtain good results for the test case of Ising systems with an additional second-neighbor coupling in two and three dimensions. An application of the method is also done to a morphological model of interacting surfaces introduced recenlty by Likos, Mecke and Wagner [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf{102}}, 9350 (1995)].     Critical behavior of 2 and 3 dimensional ferro- and antiferromagnetic spin ice systems in the framework of the Effective Field Renormalization Group technique

    In this work we generalize and subsequently apply the Effective Field Renormalization Group technique to the problem of ferro- and antiferromagnetically coupled Ising spins with local anisotropy axes in geometrically frustrated geometries (kagome and pyrochlore lattices). In this framework, we calculate the various ground states of these systems and the corresponding critical points. Excellent agreement is found with exact and Monte Carlo results. The effects of frustration are discussed. As pointed out by other authors, it turns out that the spin ice model can be exactly mapped to the standard Ising model but with effective interactions of the opposite sign to those in the original Hamiltonian. Therefore, the ferromagnetic spin ice is frustrated, and does not order. Antiferromagnetic spin ice (in both 2 and 3 dimensions), is found to undergo a transition to a long range ordered state. The thermal and magnetic critical exponents for this transition are calculated. It is found that the thermal exponent is that of the Ising universality class, whereas the magnetic critical exponent is different, as expected from the fact that the Zeeman term has a different symmetry in these systems. In addition, the recently introduced Generalized Constant Coupling method is also applied to the calculation of the critical points and ground state configurations. Again, a very good agreement is found with both exact, Monte Carlo, and renormalization group calculations for the critical points. Incidentally, we show that the generalized constant coupling approach can be regarded as the lowest order limit of the EFRG technique, in which correlations outside a frustrated unit are neglected, and scaling is substituted by strict equality of the thermodynamic quantities.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures, RevTeX 4 Some minor changes in the conclussions.     Search for Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in a triangular Ising antiferromagnet with further-neighbour ferromagnetic interactions

    We investigate an antiferromagnetic triangular Ising model with anisotropic ferromagnetic interactions between next-nearest neighbours, originally proposed by Kitatani and Oguchi (J. Phys. Soc. Japan {\bf 57}, 1344 (1988)). The phase diagram as a function of temperature and the ratio between first- and second- neighbour interaction strengths is thoroughly examined. We search for a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition to a state with algebraic decay of correlations, calculating the correlation lengths on strips of width up to 15 sites by transfer-matrix methods. Phenomenological renormalization, conformal invariance arguments, the Roomany-Wyld approximation and a direct analysis of the scaled mass gaps are used. Our results provide limited evidence that a Kosterlitz-Thouless phase is present.     Structure and functioning of four North Atlantic ecosystems - A comparative study

    The epi- and mesopelagic ecosystems of four sub-polar ocean basins, the Labrador, Irminger, Iceland and Norwegian seas, were surveyed during two legs from Bergen, Norway, to Nuuk, Greenland, and back to Bergen. The survey was conducted from 1 May to 14 June, and major results were published in five papers (Drinkwater et al., Naustvoll et al., Strand et al., Melle et al., this issue, and Klevjer et al., this issue a, this issue b). In the present paper, the structures of the ecosystem are reviewed, and aspects of the functioning of the ecosystems examined, focusing on a comparison of trophic relationships in the four basins. In many ways, the ecosystems are similar, which is not surprising since they are located at similar latitudes and share many hydrographic characteristics, like input of both warm and saline Atlantic water, as well as cold and less saline Arctic water. Literature review suggests that total annual primary production is intermediate in the eastern basins and peaks in the Labrador Sea, while the Irminger Sea is the most oligotrophic sea. This was not reflected in the measurements of different trophic levels taken during the cruise. The potential new production was estimated to be higher in the Irminger Sea than in the eastern basins, and while the biomass of mesozooplankton was similar across basins, the biomass of mesopelagic micronekton was about one order of magnitude higher in the western basins, and peaked in the Irminger Sea, where literature suggests annual primary production is at its lowest. The eastern basins hold huge stocks of pelagic planktivore fish stocks like herring, mackerel and blue whiting, none of which are abundant in the western seas. As both epipelagic nekton and mesopelagic micronekton primarily feed on the mesozooplankton, there is likely competitive interactions between the epipelagic and mesopelagic, but we're currently unable to explain the estimated ~1 order of magnitude difference in micronekton standing stock. The results obtained during the survey highlight that even if some aspects of pelagic ecosystems are well understood, we currently do not understand overall pelagic energy flow in the North Atlantic.publishedVersio

    Adult body growth and reproductive investment vary markedly within and across Atlantic and Pacific herring: a meta-analysis and review of 26 stocks

    Life-history traits of Pacific (Clupea pallasii) and Atlantic (Clupea harengus) herring, comprising both local and oceanic stocks subdivided into summer-autumn and spring spawners, were extensively reviewed. The main parameters investigated were body growth, condition, and reproductive investment. Body size of Pacific herring increased with increasing latitude. This pattern was inconsistent for Atlantic herring. Pacific and local Norwegian herring showed comparable body conditions, whereas oceanic Atlantic herring generally appeared stouter. Among Atlantic herring, summer and autumn spawners produced many small eggs compared to spring spawners, which had fewer but larger eggs—findings agreeing with statements given several decades ago. The 26 herring stocks we analysed, when combined across distant waters, showed clear evidence of a trade-off between fecundity and egg size. The size-specific individual variation, often ignored, was substantial. Additional information on biometrics clarified that oceanic stocks were generally larger and had longer life spans than local herring stocks, probably related to their longer feeding migrations. Body condition was only weakly, positively related to assumingly in situ annual temperatures (0–30 m depth). Contrarily, body growth (cm × y−1), taken as an integrator of ambient environmental conditions, closely reflected the extent of investment in reproduction. Overall, Pacific and local Norwegian herring tended to cluster based on morphometric and reproductive features, whereas oceanic Atlantic herring clustered separately. Our work underlines that herring stocks are uniquely adapted to their habitats in terms of trade-offs between fecundity and egg size whereas reproductive investment mimics the productivity of the water in question.publishedVersio
