    Effects of a giant impact on Uranus

    The effects of a giant impact on Uranus with respect to the axis tilt of Uranus and its satellites are discussed. The simulations of possible giant impacts were carried out using Cray supercomputers. The technique used is called smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH). In this technique, the material in the proto-Uranus planet and in the impactor is divided into a large number of particles which can overlap one another so that local averages over these particles determine density and pressure in the problem, and the particles themselves have their own temperatures and internal energies. During the course of the simulation, these particles move around under the influence of the forces acting on them: gravity and pressure gradients. The results of model simulations are presented

    Art Law in Transactional Practice

    Artists are increasingly important players in the economic, social, and cultural development of communities throughout the United States. Unfortunately, a lack of adequate funding and appreciation of their legal needs often means artists do not seek or receive transactional legal assistance when it would be beneficial. Attorneys, meanwhile, may perceive the needs of artists as very specialized, and thereby well beyond the scope of services the attorney can provide. For these reasons, artists may find themselves without legal assistance, to the detriment of their business, their creative output, and their community. This article seeks to demystify a number of the transactional issues faced by visual artists working in communities across the country, suggesting how attorneys versed in other industries and a variety of doctrinal areas might be able to assist.\u27 By helping local artists, attorneys can foster community development in economic, social, and cultural terms. In the interest of brevity, this article will focus on transactional issues commonly encountered by relatively unknown artists creating works in the present day, selling those works for profit, and earning a modest living from their efforts. On the practitioner side, it will focus on attorneys working in a solo or small firm environment

    Old model, new problem: when should you update a model and what happens when you do?

    This paper is a summary of some of the considerations involved in applying an existing model to a new problem, in particular in deciding whether to update or not, and some of the issues involved in interpreting the output from the new application. Thus where you start from does influence where you end up. Both change in total surplus and to a lesser extent the distribution of this change in total surplus across sectors, depends on the price and quantity data which is used to define the initial equilibrium, even if elasticity values are the same. So careful consideration should be given to whether an existing model should be updated because updating a model does matter. The final point to restate is that consumers of pig meat end up being the winners from either cost saving technology at the farm level or new product development or advertising campaigns at the retail level. Even for new technology implemented at the farm level, producers only receive about 20 per cent of the total benefits. These issues are discussed in detail in Mounter et al. (2005a, 2005b). Therefore in relation to the new problem outlined above, we now have a modelling framework available for the task that has been tested in a number of different ways and that now reflects current industry structure and size. It should be a more appropriate framework than the original that was described in the papers by Mounter et al.     USE OF NONLINEAR MEASURES TO COMPARE ATHLETE POSTURAL SWAY DYNAMICS

    The purpose of this study was to examine the use of nonlinear analysis as a tool to evaluate postural sway patterns in athletes and physically active non-athletes. Balance is an integral part of many sports but seems to be task specific. Data collection occurred for 30 seconds during eyes open condition on Double Leg and Single Left and Right Leg trials. Analysis of the data using Transfer Entropy (TE) and Fractal Dimension (FD) yielded Ice Hockey and Football players having distinctly different postural dynamic control from each other and physically active non-players in only a couple conditions for TE and multiple conditions for FD. These balance measures support the idea of sports requiring different postural sway dynamics

Kefir has been associated with a wide range of purported health benefits; such as antimicrobial activity; cholesterol metabolism; immunomodulation; anti-oxidative effects; anti-diabetic effects; anti-allergenic effects; and tumor suppression.     Exposure of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis to Milk Oligosaccharides Increases Adhesion to Epithelial Cells and Induces a Substantial Transcriptional Response

Human milk oligosaccharides (3′sialyllactose and 6′sialyllactose) and a commercial prebiotic (Beneo Orafti P95; oligofructose) were assayed for their ability to promote adhesion of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis ATCC 15697 to HT-29 and Caco-2 human intestinal cells. Treatment with the commercial prebiotic or 3′sialyllactose did not enhance adhesion. However, treatment with 6′sialyllactose resulted in increased adhesion (4.7 fold), while treatment with a mixture of 3′- and 6′-sialyllactose substantially increased adhesion (9.8 fold) to HT-29 intestinal cells. Microarray analyses were subsequently employed to investigate the transcriptional response of B. longum subsp. infantis to the different oligosaccharide treatments. This data correlated strongly with the observed changes in adhesion to HT-29 cells. The combination of 3′- and 6′-sialyllactose resulted in the greatest response at the genetic level (both in diversity and magnitude) followed by 6′sialyllactose, and 3′sialyllactose alone. The microarray data was further validated by means of real-time PCR. The current findings suggest that the increased adherence phenotype of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis resulting from exposure to milk oligosaccharides is multi-faceted, involving transcription factors, chaperone proteins, adhesion-related proteins, and a glycoside hydrolase.     Failure adequately to define or understand hospitality as a commercial phenomenon has created a fragmented academic environment and a schizophrenia in the industry that has the potential to limit its development as a global industry. This article suggests that, by redefining hospitality as behaviour and experience, a new perspective emerges that has exciting implications for the management of hospitality businesses. A framework to describe hospitality in the commercial domain is proposed. This framework suggests a focus on the host–guest relationship, generosity, theatre and performance, ‘lots of little surprises’, and the security of strangers – a focus that provides guests with experiences that are personal, memorable and add value to their lives

    Applications of a Hybrid Manufacturing Process for Fabrication and Repair of Metallic Structures

    Since its appearance, rapid prototyping technology has been of interest to various industries that are looking for a process to produce/build a part directly from a CAD model in a short time. Among them, the direct metal deposition process is the only process which directly manufactures a fully dense metal part without intermediate steps. However, challenges of the direct metal deposition process include building overhang structures, producing precision surfaces, and making parts with complex structures. Coupled between the additive and the subtractive processes into a single workstation, the integrated process, or hybrid process, can produce a metal part with machining accuracy and surface finish. Therefore, the hybrid process is potentially a very competitive process to fabricate and repair metallic structures. This paper summarizes the current development of the hybrid process to process high temperature metallic materials, including tool steel and Ti64.
