    Investigation of the chemical vicinity of crystal defects in ion-irradiated Mg and AZ31 with coincident Doppler broadening spectroscopy

    Crystal defects in magnesium and magnesium based alloys like AZ31 are of major importance for the understanding of their macroscopic properties. We have investigated defects and their chemical surrounding in Mg and AZ31 on an atomic scale with Doppler broadening spectroscopy of the positron annihilation radiation. In these Doppler spectra the chemical information and the defect contribution have to be thoroughly separated. For this reason samples of annealed Mg were irradiated with Mg-ions in order to create exclusively defects. In addition Al- and Zn-ion irradiation on Mg-samples was performed in order to create samples with defects and impurity atoms. The ion irradiated area on the samples was investigated with laterally and depth resolved positron Doppler broadening spectroscopy (DBS) and compared with preceding SRIM-simulations of the vacancy distribution, which are in excellent agreement. The investigation of the chemical vicinity of crystal defects in AZ31 was performed with coincident Doppler broadening spectroscopy (CDBS) by comparing Mg-ion irradiated AZ31 with Mg-ion irradiated Mg. No formation of solute-vacancy complexes was found due to the ion irradiation, despite the high defect mobility.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review B on March 20 20076.     A randomized trial of prenatal n-3 fatty acid supplementation and preterm delivery

    Background: Previous studies have suggested that maternal supplementation with n−3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids may reduce the incidence of preterm delivery but may also prolong gestation beyond term; however, more data are needed regarding the role of n−3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in pregnancy. Methods: We performed a multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial in which women who were pregnant with single or multiple fetuses were assigned to receive either fish-oil capsules that contained 900 mg of n−3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n−3 group) or vegetable-oil capsules that contained trace n−3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (control group) daily, beginning before 20 weeks of gestation and continuing to 34 weeks of gestation or delivery, whichever occurred first. The primary outcome was early preterm delivery, defined as delivery before 34 completed weeks of gestation. Other pregnancy and neonatal outcomes were also assessed. Results: A total of 5544 pregnancies in 5517 women were randomly assigned at six centers in Australia; 5486 pregnancies were included in the primary analysis. Early preterm delivery occurred in the case of 61 of 2734 pregnancies (2.2%) in the n−3 group and 55 of 2752 pregnancies (2.0%) in the control group; the between-group difference was not significant (adjusted relative risk, 1.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.79 to 1.63; P=0.50). There were no significant differences between the groups in the incidence of interventions in post-term (\u3e41 weeks of gestation) deliveries, in adverse events, or in other pregnancy or neonatal outcomes, except that a higher percentage of infants born to women in the n−3 group than in the control group were very large for gestational age at birth (adjusted relative risk, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.65). Percentages of serious adverse events did not differ between the groups. Minor gastrointestinal disturbances were more commonly reported in the n−3 group than in the control group. Conclusions: Supplementation with n−3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids from early pregnancy (\u3c20 weeks of gestation) until 34 weeks of gestation did not result in a lower incidence of early preterm delivery or a higher incidence of interventions in post-term deliveries than control.     Relationship between anti-DFS70 autoantibodies and oxidative stress

    Background: The anti-DFS70 autoantibodies are one of the most commonly and widely described agent of unknown clinical significance, frequently detected in healthy individuals. It is not known whether the DFS70 autoantibodies are protective or pathogenic. One of the factors suspected of inducing the formation of anti-DFS70 antibodies is increased oxidative stress. We evaluated the coexistence of anti-DFS70 antibodies with selected markers of oxidative stress and investigated whether these antibodies could be considered as indirect markers of oxidative stress. Methods: The intensity of oxidative stress was measured in all samples via indices of free-radical damage to lipids and proteins such as total oxidant status (TOS), concentrations of lipid hydroperoxides (LPH), lipofuscin (LPS), and malondialdehyde (MDA). The parameters of the non-enzymatic antioxidant system, such as total antioxidant status (TAS) and uric acid concentration (UA), were also measured, as well as the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD). Based on TOS and TAS values, the oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated. All samples were also tested with indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and 357 samples were selected for direct monospecific anti DFS70 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) testing. Results: The anti-DFS70 antibodies were confirmed by ELISA test in 21.29% of samples. Compared with anti-DFS70 negative samples we observed 23% lower concentration of LPH (P =.038) and 11% lower concentration of UA (P =.005). TOS was 20% lower (P =.014). The activity of SOD was up to 5% higher (P =.037). The Pearson correlation showed weak negative correlation for LPH, UA, and TOS and a weak positive correlation for SOD activity. Conclusion: In samples positive for the anti-DFS70 antibody a decreased level of oxidative stress was observed, especially in the case of samples with a high antibody titer.     Analysis of the impact of sex and age on the variation in the prevalence of antinuclear autoantibodies in Polish population : a nationwide observational, cross-sectional study

    The detection of antinuclear autoantibody (ANA) is dependent on many factors and varies between the populations. The aim of the study was first to assess the prevalence of ANA in the Polish adult population depending on age, sex and the cutoff threshold used for the results obtained. Second, we estimated the occurrence of individual types of ANA-staining patterns. We tested 1731 patient samples using commercially available IIFA using two cutoff thresholds of 1:100 and 1:160. We found ANA in 260 participants (15.0%), but the percentage of positive results strongly depended on the cutoff level. For a cutoff threshold 1:100, the positive population was 19.5% and for the 1:160 cutoff threshold, it was 11.7%. The most prevalent ANA-staining pattern was AC-2 Dense Fine speckled (50%), followed by AC-21 Reticular/AMA (14.38%) ANA more common in women (72%); 64% of ANA-positive patients were over 50 years of age. ANA prevalence in the Polish population is at a level observed in other highly developed countries and is more prevalent in women and elderly individuals.     In this paper the author presents a method for the determination of winter rape bending stress, the values of which were used to characterize the mechanical properties of the rape stalks. The study was carried out on the stalks of the Jupiter variety at the full silique phase of technical and full ripeness. The maximum bending stresses are determined by means of the measurable surface areas S and S’ of the stalk cross section. This study showed a considerable variability of maximum bending stress on the length of the stalks as well as in the course of the plants growth and development. It was found that the method for the determination of maximum bending stresses as a function of the cross section area of the stalk represents a realistic approach to the problem of testing the mechanical properties of rape stalks.W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono metodę wyznaczania naprężeń zginających łodygi rzepaku ozimego za pomocą, których charakteryzowano właściwości mechaniczne łodyg. Badania zostały przeprowadzone na łodygach rzepaku ozimego Jupiter w czasie całkowitego wypełnienia łuszczyn oraz podczas dojrzałości technicznej i pełnej. Naprężenia zginające zostały wyznaczone poprzez mierzalne powierzchnie przekroju poprzecznego łodygi S i S’. Niniejsze badania wykazały dużą zmienność maksymalnych naprężeń zginających zarówno na długości łodygi jak również w czasie wegetacji roślin. Stwierdzono, że metoda wyznaczania naprężeń zginających będących funkcją powierzchni przekroju poprzecznego łodyg przedstawia realny sposób testowania mechanicznych właściwości łodyg rzepaku

    The present study is concerned with determining the cutting energy in dynamic tests, and the bending stress, shearing stress, and cutting energy in static tests for stalks of winter rape of the Jupiter, Jantar, and Jet Neuf varieties. A considerable variability was observed in the mechanical parameters of winter rape stalks, along the length of the stalks as well as in the course of the phenological stages of the plants. The studies also showed differentiation between the varieties. The character of changes in the values of the mechanical parameters along the length of the stalk is described by square polynominals. An evaluation is made of the effect of the stalk cross section surface area and of the stalk density on the variability of the mechanical properties of winter rape stalks in the course of the development of the plants. It was found that the stalks of the Jupiter variety were characterized by the lowest density as compared to those of the Jantar and Jet Neuf varieties. Also, the spacing of plant rows and the number of plants per m² were found to have a significant effect on the variability of the mechanical properties of the stalks of the Jupiter variety.W niniejszej pracy określano energię cięcia w badaniach dynamicznych oraz naprężenie zginające, ścinające i energię cięcia w badaniach statycznych dla łodyg rzepaku ozimego odmiany Jupiter, Jantar i Jet Neuf. Stwierdzono dużą zmienność parametrów mechanicznych łodyg rzepaku ozimego zarówno wzdłuż łodygi jak i w fazach fenologicznych. Badania wykazały zróżnicowanie międzyodmianowe. Charakter zmian wartości parametrów mechanicznych wzdłuż łodygi opisuje wielomian 2-ego stopnia. Ponadto dokonano oceny wpływu powierzchni przekroju poprzecznego łodygi i gęstości na zmienność właściwości mechanicznych łodyg analizowanych odmian rzepaku ozimego w czasie rozwoju rośliny. Stwierdzono, że łodygi odmiany Jupiter charakteryzowały się najmniejszą gęstością w porównaniu z odmianą Jantar i Jet Neuf. Jednocześnie stwierdzono istotny wpływ rozstawy rzędów oraz obsady roślin/m² na zmienność właściwości mechanicznych łodyg odmiany Jupiter
