Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is the etiologic agent of enzootic pneumonia in pigs and causes large economic losses in the swine industry. There is little data on the positivity of this disease in Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the seropositivity for this agent in 200 serum samples collected from pigs in a slaughterhouse located in the central region of São Paulo. A high percentage (52%) of positivity was found indicating the presence of the agent and the need to implement control measures.Unesp Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e ZootecniaUnesp Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecni

Trobar sentit a aprendre a la universitat

    No full text

Measuring synovial fluid procalcitonin levels in distinguishing cases of septic arthritis, including prosthetic joints, from other causes of arthritis and aseptic loosening

Objectives: Differentiating septic arthritis from non-septic arthritis can be challenging as the clinical pictures are similar and an efficacious diagnostic test is not yet available. Our objectives in this study were to establish if procalcitonin (PCT) could be reproducibly measured from synovial fluid, if there is a difference in synovial procalcitonin values between patients with septic and non-septic arthritis, respectively, including those with implants and to determine cut-off levels that could be used as a practical tool in the management of these conditions. Methods: Using a standard serum assay, synovial fluid PCT levels were measured retrospectively in 26 septic and 50 non-septic predefined arthritis cases. The reproducibility of synovial PCT was also assessed at various concentrations. Results: Synovial PCT can be measured and is reproducible. In this cohort, statistically significant higher synovial PCT levels were found in cases of septic arthritis than in non-septic arthritis. Sensitivities, specificities and positive and negative predictive values varied at different cut-off levels. Conclusion: The test could be added to other microbiological and biochemical tests and may be used to supplement other clinical, radiological and laboratory findings in the assessment of patients with acute painful joints. In our cohort, findings of very high synovial PCT levels supported an infection process, including in prosthesis-related infections. The high negative predictive value of low synovial PCT levels could exclude infection in both native and prosthetic joints. Larger prospective studies are needed to further validate these results and to examine the cost effectiveness of synovial PCT.</p

Arctic sea ice geodesy using SATICE-type GPS ice drifters

First Ice, Climate, Economics - Arctic Research on Change General Assembly Meeting, 19-21 November 2014, Barcelona.-- 1 page, 9 figuresSATICE-type buoys are geodetic-quality GPS systems capable of collecting continuous high-precision GPS data while drifting on sea ice. The buoy core sensor is a dual-frequency, carrier-beat-phase GPS receiver that provides continuous (0.1 Hz), three-dimensional position estimates with cm-level precision in a well-defined geodetic reference frame. Besides highquality GPS measurements, other geophysical auxiliary observations such meteorological, ice, and upper ocean are also acquired. Heretofore, we have designed, built, deployed, and operated five SATICE buoys, in the Western Arctic (Chukchi Sea and Beaufort Sea), two of which are currently active in the Beaufort. Data from these buoys are helping us gain an improved understanding of Arctic sea ice physics and ocean dynamics. As part of our contribution to ICE-ARC, we will build a new series of improved SATICE buoys and deploy them pan-Arctic.
