Exploring Software Developers’ Experiences in Startups: The Philippine

    Get PDF
Though there may be a proliferation of technology startups, it is a sad fact that most of them fail. Because startups depend on people, there is a need to study not only the factors that lead to the success or failure of these startups, but also the experiences of the people on which these startups depend. This study explores the experiences of software developers in technology startups in the Philippines, a developing country that has consistently ranked highly in the annual Tholons Top Outsourcing Destinations Ranking and the Kearney Global Services Location Index. Thematic analysis of interview data revealed 7 themes: Startups are characterized by (1) Rapid Search, which refers to the need to look for or develop something innovative and useful under time pressure. Rapid Search in turn requires a lot of (2) Feedback, highly flexible (3) Development Strategies, a high degree of (4) Collaboration, and a lot of (5) Learning. To cope well with all the uncertainties that startups must face, startup software developers’ (6) Motivations are more intrinsic than extrinsic, and are derived from a strong sense of (7) Community, from all the Learning (theme 5) that the software developer makes because he or she must, and from the internal gratification of having found or developed something innovative and useful, i.e., Rapid Search, which is theme 1

Promoting Comprehension Strategies of Primary Grade Students Through Datacasting Materials for Distance Learning

Many online learners especially in resource-challenged schools struggled with learning gaps during the pandemic crisis. This study focuses on using cost effective datacasting learning materials for distance education that promote intermediate grade students’ self-regulation, reading and writing skills. Datacasting is the process of delivering computer (IP) data over a traditional television broadcast signal. Locally, where only some households have Internet access but many have television sets, datacasting affords greater learning opportunities. Guided by structure, interactivity, and the functional language teaching theory, this study used sequential explanatory design to explore the role of datacasting in a public elementary school in Cavite in the academic year 2021 to 2022. Analyses of students’ artifacts reveal that their levels ofautonomy are non-autonomous, semi-autonomous, and autonomous. Moreover, the data also show that when they navigated the materials, they used these types of comprehension strategies: preparational, organizational, elaboration, andmonitoring. Correlations between culminating writing activities and final writing scores were found, but are not statistically significant, which may be attributed to the pandemic-induced sample attrition. The results suggest a need to refine the learning materials following the multimedia principles of personalization and embodiment through judicious text choice and adaptation and task design. Pedagogical recommendations for the use of datacasting materials are also offered

Medical Transcriptionist’s Experience with Speech Recognition Technology

    Get PDF
The medical transcription industry is rapidly evolving in terms of services and revenues for the last decade. This ITES contributed the largest employment growth rate in IT-BPO in 2013. The success of this industry was assisted by recent technology like Speech Recognition Technology (SRT). Because such technologies depend on people, there is a need to study on the experiences of the people behind those achievements. This paper addresses this gap by exploring Medical Transcriptionist’s (MTs) experiences using SRT. Findings revealed at least five themes prevalent to the experiences of MTs including audio file classification, valuable characteristics, negative observations, technostress coping, and highest quality orientation. This paper suggests that by looking at the experiences of MTs, current and future employers can gain insights in improving and enriching these outsourcing services. Furthermore, the presence of common themes indicates the possibility of performing a grounded theory based on substantive area of medical transcription

Implications of Gender Difference in Coronary Calcification as Assessed by CT Coronary Angiography

BACKGROUND: Arterial calcium as measured by 64-slice computed tomography coronary angiography (64-CT) is a reliable predictor of cardiovascular disease risk. Lipid-rich plaques with lower degrees of calcification may pose greater risk for adverse coronary events than more stabilized calcified plaques as a result of the increased risk of plaque rupture, migration, and subsequent acute coronary syndrome. We sought to examine coronary artery calcium scores as measured via 64-CT to assess the extent of calcification and plaque distribution in women compared to men. METHODS: A total of 138 patients referred for 64-CT were evaluated. Computerized tomographic angiography was performed using the GE LightSpeed VCT. Subgroup analysis comparing male and female data (including demographic data) was performed. All major coronary arteries were analyzed for coronary stenosis/plaque characterization as well as total vessel calcium (Agatston) score quantification. Patient demographics and coronary risk factors were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 552 coronary arteries were evaluated in 138 patients (85 men, 53 women). The average age for females was 64.4 +/- 10.8 years and for males 60.0 +/- 12.8 years. The only demographic/cardiovascular risk factor in which the difference between men and women was significant was smoking history, where 23.5% of men had a history of smoking while only 9.6% of females endorsed having a smoking history (P \u3c 0.044). On comparison of all total vessel calcium scores, males had a higher total mean calcium score than females in each individual vessel. The results were as follows for males versus females, respectively: left main total vessel calcium score 46.49 versus 16.71 (P = 0.167); left anterior descending 265.21 versus 109.6 (P \u3c 0.003); left circumflex 130.5 versus 39.7 (P \u3c 0.004); and right coronary 213.5 versus 73.8 (P \u3c 0.01). The odds of having a total calcium score \u3e100 (versus not) was 3.62 times greater in males relative to females, given that all the other cardiovascular risk factors are adjusted for (95% confidence interval: 1.37-9.54). On average, men had an average of 2.1 +/- 1.5 epicardial vessels with a calcium score \u3e/=11 compared to 1.3 +/- 1.4 for women (P \u3c 0.005). CONCLUSION: There are clear differences between males and females regarding total vessel calcium scores and therefore risk of future adverse coronary events. Males tended to have higher average calcium scores in each coronary artery than females with a greater tendency to have multiple vessel involvement. Using this information, more large-scale, randomized controlled studies should be performed to correlate differences in the extent of coronary calcification with the observed variance in clinical presentation during coronary events between males and females as a means to potentially establish gender-specific therapeutic regimens

Brain Injury With Systemic Inflammation in Newborns With Congenital Heart Disease Undergoing Heart Surgery

The potential role of systemic inflammation on brain injury in newborns with congenital heart disease (CHD) was assessed by measuring levels of central nervous system (CNS)-derived proteins in serum prior to and following cardiac surgery. A total of 23 newborns (gestational age, 39±1 weeks) with a diagnosis of CHD that required cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) were enrolled in the current study. Serum samples were collected immediately prior to surgery and 2, 24 and 48 h following CPB, and serum levels of phosphorylated neurofilament-heavy subunit (pNF-H), neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and S100B were analyzed. Systemic inflammation was assessed by measuring serum concentrations of complement C5a and complement sC5b9, and the following cytokines: Interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL12p70, interferon γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. Analysis of cord blood from normal term deliveries (n=26) provided surrogate normative values for newborns. pNF-H and S100B were 2.4- to 2.8-fold higher (P\u3c0.0001) in patient sera than in cord blood prior to surgery and remained elevated following CPB. Pre-surgical serum pNF-H and S100B levels directly correlated with interleukin (IL)-12p70 (ρ=0.442, P\u3c0.05). pNF-H was inversely correlated with arterial pO2 prior to surgery (ρ=-0.493, P=0.01) and directly correlated with arterial pCO2 post-CPB (ρ=0.426, P\u3c0.05), suggesting that tissue hypoxia and inflammation contribute to blood brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction and neuronal injury. Serum IL12p70, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and TNF-α levels were significantly higher in patients than in normal cord blood and levels of these cytokines increased following CPB (P\u3c0.001). Activation of complement was observed in all patients prior to surgery, and serum C5a and sC5b9 remained elevated up to 48 h post-surgery. Furthermore, they were correlated (P\u3c0.05) with low arterial pO2, high pCO2 and elevated arterial pressure in the postoperative period. Length of mechanical ventilation was associated directly with post-surgery serum IL-12p70 and IL-8 concentrations (P\u3c0.05). Elevated serum concentrations of pNF-H and S100B in neonates with CHD suggest BBB dysfunction and CNS injury, with concurrent hypoxemia and an activated inflammatory response potentiating this effect
