    Bio-intensive integrated management strategy for mustard aphid Lipaphis erysimi Kalt. (Homoptera: Aphididae)

    Among the various treatments evaluated for their bio-efficacy against mustard aphid on Indian mustard during 2011-12 and 2012-13 at CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, the spray of Dimethoate 30 EC @ 1 ml/l followed by Verticillium lecanii @ 108 CS/ml was proved to be the best treatment with pooled mean aphid population of 4.5, 3.25 and 1.65 aphids/plant as against 22.0, 24.0 and 26.0 aphids/plant in the control after 3, 7 and 10 days of treatment, respectively. The pooled mean seed yield was also maximum (1485.0 kg/ha) in this treatment as compared to control (1305.0 kg/ha).The treatment was found on par with spray of dimethoate @ 1 ml/l followed by Coccinella septempunctata @ 5,000 beetles/ha with pooled mean aphid population of 5.0, 4.0 and 2.0 aphids/plant after 3, 7 and 10 days of treatment, respectively and pooled mean seed yield of (1470.0 kg/ha). But the cost benefit ratio was maximum (7.25) in treatment dimethoate followed by C. septempunctata and NSKE @ 5% followed by C. septempunctata @ 5,000 beetles/ha (6.68). Thus, entomopathogenic fungi like V. lecanii or NSKE along with release of C. septempunctata can be used as alternative measure to manage mustard aphid instead of solely relying on insecticides

    Fermentation Of Multigrain Dough – An Approach To Reduce Glycemic Index For Healthy Bread

    The use of sourdough as the starter culture for bread making is one of the oldest processes in food fermentation and is very much prevalent in being used for the manufacture of various multigrain breads. The fermentation process of breads from mixed flours is one way, reported to reduce the glycemic index as compared to white bread. In this paper, we have discussed the use of (autochthonous) native culture vs pure culture use, in fermentation to prepare a starter culture sourdough by propagative fermentation. Since such a dough is incorporated in the sourdough bread making process (1:3), by the initial process of intermittent back-slopping (at intervals of 3.5 and 7 days) to propagate sourdough with a starter culture, as a part of the process, we observed the reduction in glycaemic index of the sourdough itself to as low as GI=40, at 3rd day of fermentation when the pure consortium and at 5th day of fermentation GI=43, when the native consortium was used. The sourdough process is thus an essential tool, aimed to make healthy breads, as it is incorporated as an ingredient in the process, to make sourdough bread

    A case report of primary intraabdominal rhabdomyosarcoma presenting as metastasis

    Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a rare and in adult accounts for only 1-3% of all malignant soft tissue tumors. The most frequent sites of origin is within head and neck area. One of the least common sites is the retrorectal-presacral space. This case of 61 years old female is probably the fifth well-documented case of primary abdominopelvic RMS. She presented with abdominal distensions, obstipation, vomiting for 5 days. Excision of the gut wall along with soft tissue mass was done and sent to our department for histopathological examination. On microscopic examination, a diagnosis of malignant mesenchymal tumor with closest resemblance to RMS was made. It is a rare case and needs to bring in notice as there is very few information regarding intraabdominal RMS. This case initially thought to be metastasis from gynecologic malignancy.  It is important for pathologists, gynecologists and radiologists to recognize RMS as differential diagnosis of masses arising in abdomen and pelvis

    Ewing’s sarcoma or peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor at the base of tongue: a rare location case report

    Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor now termed as Ewings sarcoma/PNET, representing a family of tumors with varying degrees of neuronal differentiation and genetic rearrangements. Most common sites are extraosseous involving trunk and lower limb. Base of tongue is a very rare site for Ewing’s/PNET, hence in view of rarity of the location as an uncommon presentation, the case has been reported for the better understanding and supporting the literature with the similar finding. A 68 years old female patient presented with the complaint of difficulty in swallowing since 3 months. On examination growth was identified at the left side base of tongue. Biopsy was processed and stained with H&E and other relevant markers. Differentials on the basis microscopic examination were lymphoma, neuroendocrine tumor and primitive neuroectodermal tumor. Various immunohistochemical markers to rule out the given differential were used. The tumor was positive for CD 99 and vimentin. The case was repored as PNET. Peripheral PNET is a challenging topic. Wide range of extraosseous locations have been observed but head and neck being less reported needs to be studied for understanding the behavior of this highly malignant disease in this rare location so that patient can be benefitted by advanced multimodality treatments including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy

    Dengue Vector Surveillance in and around Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) – Goa, India

    As per the International Health Regulations, it is a moral responsibility on national governments to keep international seaports/airports and peripheral areas up to 400 meters free of vector mosquitoes in its adult and immature stages and the mosquito vectors of other diseases of epidemiological significance. In view of seriousness of the problem, the present study was undertaken in and around Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), Goa (India), to see the prevalence of Aedes mosquito. This study was undertaken in the month of February and December 2016. Inside the port, no larval breeding was detected except in December survey, and 3.85 Breteau Index (BI) was recorded. In Headland Sada (residential colony), breeding was detected with 6.0 and 10.0 BI in February and December 2016 respectively. Similarly, in Jetty village high larval breeding was searched with 9.8 and 8.0 BI in February and December, respectively. In the residential colony, plastic containers used for storing water acted as the main source of larval breeding. These plastic containers were used to store water for long time and maintaining Aedes breeding in adverse condition throughout the year. According to breeding preference ratio (BPR), cement tank showed the highest (4.37) BPR in the month of February while in December BPR was highest for iron drum (27.7) followed by waterstoring plastic container (1.14). These residential colonies are in close vicinity of the seaport. Local factors play an important role in the propagation and prevalence of Aedes mosquito. Routine entomological surveillance is required to monitor the vector prevalence in the residential colonies around the seaport. Baseline surveillance data should be collected regularly to monitor vector prevalence and destroy the breeding sites in and around the seaport

    Platelet and blood transfusion in a child with dyskeratosis congenita for dental extraction – a case report

    Introduction and Objective: Dyskeratosis congenita (DC) also known as Zinsser-Engman- Cole Syndrome is a rare inherited disorder with a prevalence of less than one per million. Zinsser et al. described an inherited variant of ectodermal dysplasia that affected skin, nails and mucous membranes in early 1900s.The syndrome eventually came to be known as DC and is classified as one of the inherited bone marrow failure syndromes (IBMFS). DC is the association of three clinical features: dystrophic nails, oral leukoplakia (white spots on the tongue and oral mucosa) and abnormal skin pigmentation. Case report and Conclusion: This case report describes a dental management of a case of DC. Fluctuating vital and blood parameters and deteriorating overall health status were major challenges delivering dental treatment.     Tuberculoma of the Tongue Presenting as Hemimacroglossia

    The underdiagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis lesions, along with an emerging global resistance to antitubercular drugs, warrants an increased awareness of the involvement of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in atypical lesions of oral cavity. Tongue is the most common site of oral tuberculosis. We report a rare presentation of lingual tuberculosis in a 65-year-old male, a chronic tobacco chewer, who came to us with swelling of the tongue which apparently looked like hemimacroglossia, leading to the clinical diagnosis of submucosal carcinoma of tongue. Enlargement of tongue is a slow process resulting from gradual invasion and lodging of bacilli in the tongue. Biopsy and histopathological examination revealed tuberculous etiology of the lesion and the patient responded well to antitubercular therapy

    Don’t turn your back on the symptoms of psychosis : a proof-of-principle, quasi-experimental public health trial to reduce the duration of untreated psychosis in Birmingham, UK

    Background: Reducing the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) is an aspiration of international guidelines for first episode psychosis; however, public health initiatives have met with mixed results. Systematic reviews suggest that greater focus on the sources of delay within care pathways, (which will vary between healthcare settings) is needed to achieve sustainable reductions in DUP (BJP 198: 256-263; 2011). Methods/Design: A quasi-experimental trial, comparing a targeted intervention area with a ‘detection as usual’ area in the same city. A proof-of–principle trial, no a priori assumptions are made regarding effect size; key outcome will be an estimate of the potential effect size for a definitive trial. DUP and number of new cases will be collected over an 18-month period in target and control areas and compared; historical data on DUP collected in both areas over the previous three years, will serve as a benchmark. The intervention will focus on reducing two significant DUP component delays within the overall care pathway: delays within the mental health service and help-seeking delay. Discussion: This pragmatic trial will be the first to target known delays within the care pathway for those with a first episode of psychosis. If successful, this will provide a generalizable methodology that can be implemented in a variety of healthcare contexts with differing sources of delay.     In vitro PHYTOTHERAPY OF VECTOR SNAILS BY BINARY COMBINATIONS OF LARVICIDAL ACTIVE COMPONENTS IN EFFECTIVE CONTROL OF FASCIOLIASIS

    SUMMARY A food-borne trematode infection fascioliasis is one among common public health problems worldwide. It caused a great economic loss for the human race. Control of snail population below a certain threshold level is one of the important methods in the campaign to reduce the incidence of fascioliasis. The life cycle of the parasite can be interrupted by killing the snail or Fasciola larva redia and cercaria inside of the snail Lymnaea acuminata. In vitro toxicity of different binary combinations (1:1 ratio) of plant-derived larvicidal active components such as citral, ferulic acid, umbelliferone, azadirachtin and allicin against Fasciola redia and cercaria were tested. The mortality of larvae was observed at 2h, 4h, 6h and 8h of treatment. In in vitro condition azadirachtin + allicin (1:1 ratio) was highly toxic against redia and cercaria (8h LC50 0.006 and 0.005 mg/L). Toxicity of citral + ferulic acid was lowest against redia and cercaria larvae
