    Limit on sterile neutrino contribution from the Mainz Neutrino Mass Experiment

    The recent analysis of the normalization of reactor antineutrino data, the calibration data of solar neutrino experiments using gallium targets, and the results from the neutrino oscillation experiment MiniBooNE suggest the existence of a fourth light neutrino mass state with a mass of O(eV), which contributes to the electron neutrino with a sizable mixing angle. Since we know from measurements of the width of the Z0 resonance that there are only three active neutrinos, a fourth neutrino should be sterile (i.e., interact only via gravity). The corresponding fourth neutrino mass state should be visible as an additional kink in beta-decay spectra. In this work the phase II data of the Mainz Neutrino Mass Experiment have been analyzed searching for a possible contribution of a fourth light neutrino mass state. No signature of such a fourth mass state has been found and limits on the mass and the mixing of this fourth mass states are derived

    Untangling perceptual memory: hysteresis and adaptation map into separate cortical networks

    Perception is an active inferential process in which prior knowledge is combined with sensory input, the result of which determines the contents of awareness. Accordingly, previous experience is known to help the brain “decide” what to perceive. However, a critical aspect that has not been addressed is that previous experience can exert 2 opposing effects on perception: An attractive effect, sensitizing the brain to perceive the same again (hysteresis), or a repulsive effect, making it more likely to perceive something else (adaptation). We used functional magnetic resonance imaging and modeling to elucidate how the brain entertains these 2 opposing processes, and what determines the direction of such experience-dependent perceptual effects. We found that although affecting our perception concurrently, hysteresis and adaptation map into distinct cortical networks: a widespread network of higher-order visual and fronto-parietal areas was involved in perceptual stabilization, while adaptation was confined to early visual areas. This areal and hierarchical segregation may explain how the brain maintains the balance between exploiting redundancies and staying sensitive to new information. We provide a Bayesian model that accounts for the coexistence of hysteresis and adaptation by separating their causes into 2 distinct terms: Hysteresis alters the prior, whereas adaptation changes the sensory evidence (the likelihood function)

    Targeting aquatic microcontaminants for monitoring: exposure categorization and application to the Swiss situation

    Background, aim, and scope: Aquatic microcontaminants (MCs) comprise diverse chemical classes, such as pesticides, biocides, pharmaceuticals, consumer products, and industrial chemicals. For water pollution control and the evaluation of water protection measures, it is crucial to screen for MCs. However, the selection and prioritization of which MCs to screen for is rather difficult and complex. Existing methods usually are strongly limited because of a lack of screening regulations or unavailability of required data. Method and models: Here, we present a simple exposure-based methodology that provides a systematic overview of a broad range of MCs according to their potential to occur in the water phase of surface waters. The method requires input of publicly available data only. Missing data are estimated with quantitative structure-property relationships. The presented substance categorization methodology is based on the chemicals' distribution behavior between different environmental media, degradation data, and input dynamics. Results: Seven different exposure categories are distinguished based on different compound properties and input dynamics. Ranking the defined exposure categories based on a chemical's potential to occur in the water phase of surface waters, exposure categories I and II contain chemicals with a very high potential, categories III and IV contain chemicals with a high potential, and categories V and VI contain chemicals with a moderate to low potential. Chemicals in category VII are not evaluated because of a lack of data. We illustrate and evaluate the methodology on the example of MCs in Swiss surface waters. Furthermore, a categorized list containing potentially water-relevant chemicals is provided. Discussion: Chemicals of categories I and III continuously enter surface waters and are thus likely to show relatively steady concentrations. Therefore, they are best suited for water monitoring programs requiring a relatively low sampling effort. Chemicals in categories II and IV have complex input dynamics. They are consequently more difficult to monitor. However, they should be considered if an overall picture is needed that includes contaminants from diffuse sources. Conclusions: The presented methodology supports compound selection for (a) water quality guidance, (b) monitoring programs, and (c) further research on the chemical's ecotoxicology. The results from the developed categorization procedure are supported by data on consumption and observed concentrations in Swiss surface waters. The presented methodology is a tool to preselect potential hazardous substances based on exposure-based criteria for policy guidance and monitoring programs and a first important step for a detailed risk assessment for potential microcontaminant

    Doping high Tc superconductors with oxygen and metallic atoms: A molecular dynamics study

    Using classical molecular dynamics based on Lennard-Jones-like potentials, a mechanically stable YBa2Cu3O7 high Tc superconductor structure is generated. This process is controlled via interactive computer graphics. After doping atoms into or removing atoms from the sample using a recently implemented picking mechanism, the lattice oscillation energy is annihilated with a simulated annealing procedure. The remaining minimum ground state energy allows marking of the preferred doping location. Information on the doping mechanism is important because the magnetic and superconducting properties of these compounds depend very strongly on their oxygen conten

    AbstractBone resorption in mice involves the degradation of extracellular matrix. Whereas several proteases seem to be implicated in this process, it becomes increasingly clear that matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), amongst them especially MMP-13 and MMP-3, play an essential role. We have purified MMP-13 and MMP-3 from mouse calvariae-conditioned media by differential fractionation and analyzed their collagenolytic, caseinolytic, gelatinolytic and proteoglycanolytic activities. It could be shown that in mouse calvariae-conditioned media most of the measured enzyme activities were due to MMP-13, although zymographies revealed that MMP-3, MMP-2, MMP-9 as well as TIMPs were present too. MMP-13 and MMP-3 proteins were detected and their enzyme activities were neutralized by specific polyclonal antisera. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that in cultures of mouse calvariae the production of MMP-13 was induced by the potent MMP-stimulator heparin and by parathyroid hormone (PTH), whereas the levels of MMP-3 remained unchanged. Although PTH-induced bone resorption was inhibited by calcitonin treatment, MMP-13 mRNA and protein expression were not significantly altered by this hormone. Together with previous observations, these results indicate that PTH regulates bone resorption through MMP-13, but not by MMP-3, and that its reversion by calcitonin involves neither of the two enzymes

    Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Thema Sportidentität und Motivation im Profigolfsport. Es soll ein Vergleich zwischen den beiden Staaten USA und Österreich gemacht werden. Dadurch Golf ein sehr regeldominierter Sport ist, kam die Frage auf in wie weit sich die Zugänge und Einstellungen der Betroffenen in dieser Sportart länderspezifisch unterscheiden. Die Untersuchung findet mit Hilfe eines standardisierten Fragebogens statt, welcher mir von der Abteilung Sportsoziologie der Universität Wien zur Verfügung gestellt wurde. In weiter Folge soll diese Arbeit auch die Entwicklung und Verbreitung des Golfsports in beiden Nationen aufzeigen. Der empirische Teil bestätigt meinen Ansatz dass die Unterschiede meist nicht signifikant sind abgesehen von den ethnischen und sozialen Grundeinstellungen.This paper is about the Sport identity and motivation in professional golfsport. It should demonsrate the comparison between american and austrian Golfers. Golf is a very strict, oldfashioned and overruled game thats why the question appears how people find access to this game and whats their attitude towards golf in comparison Austria and USA. The questionary for this testing came from the university of vienna from the department fot sport sociology. Likewise this paper is about the development in Golf in both countries. The statistic part will confirm my acceptation that there is no significant Difference between both countries except in some parts like social and ethnic attitudes

    A verified equivalent-circuit model for slotwaveguide modulators

    We formulate and experimentally validate an equivalent-circuit model based on distributed elements to describe the electric and electro-optic (EO) properties of travellingwave silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) slot-waveguide modulators. The model allows to reliably predict the small-signal EO frequency response of the modulators exploiting purely electrical measurements of the frequency-dependent RF transmission characteristics. We experimentally verify the validity of our model, and we formulate design guidelines for an optimum trade-off between optical loss due to free-carrier absorption (FCA), electro-optic bandwidth, and {\pi}-voltage of SOH slot-waveguide modulators

    Effect of tibolone on breast cancer cell proliferation in postmenopausal ER+ patients: Results from STEM trial

    Purpose: Tibolone is a selective tissue estrogenic activity regulator, approved for the treatment of vasomotor symptoms in postmenopausal women. We have done an exploratory, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot trial to investigate the tissue-specific effects of 2.5 mg tibolone on breast cancer in postmenopausal women, in particular on tissue proliferation (STEM, Study of Tibolone Effects on Mamma carcinoma tissue). Experimental Design: Postmenopausal women with initially stage I/II, estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) primary breast cancer, were randomly assigned to 14 days of placebo or 2.5 mg/d tibolone. Core biopsies of the primary tumor were obtained before and after treatment. Ki-67 and apoptosis index were analyzed in baseline and corresponding posttreatment specimen. Results: Of 102 enrolled patients, 95 had evaluable data. Baseline characteristics were comparable between both treatment groups. Breast cancer cases are mainly invasive (99%), stage I or II (42% and 50% respectively), and ER+ (99%). Median intratumoral Ki-67 expression at baseline was 13.0%, in the tibolone group and 17.8% in the placebo group, and decreased to 12.0% after 14 days of tibolone while increasing to 19.0% in the placebo group. This change from baseline was not significantly different between tibolone and placebo (Wilcoxon test; P = 0.17). A significant difference was observed between the treatment groups when the median change from baseline apoptosis index was compared between the treatment groups (tibolone, 0.0%; placebo, +0.3%; Wilcoxon test; P = 0.031). The incidence of adverse effects was comparable. Conclusions: In ER+ breast tumors, 2.5 mg/d tibolone given for 14 days has no significant effect on tumor cell proliferation

    Promotion of importin α–mediated nuclear import by the phosphorylation-dependent binding of cargo protein to 14-3-3

    14-3-3 proteins are phosphoserine/threonine-binding proteins that play important roles in many regulatory processes, including intracellular protein targeting. 14-3-3 proteins can anchor target proteins in the cytoplasm and in the nucleus or can mediate their nuclear export. So far, no role for 14-3-3 in mediating nuclear import has been described. There is also mounting evidence that nuclear import is regulated by the phosphorylation of cargo proteins, but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Myopodin is a dual-compartment, actin-bundling protein that functions as a tumor suppressor in human bladder cancer. In muscle cells, myopodin redistributes between the nucleus and the cytoplasm in a differentiation-dependent and stress-induced fashion. We show that importin α binding and the subsequent nuclear import of myopodin are regulated by the serine/threonine phosphorylation-dependent binding of myopodin to 14-3-3. These results establish a novel paradigm for the promotion of nuclear import by 14-3-3 binding. They provide a molecular explanation for the phosphorylation-dependent nuclear import of nuclear localization signal-containing cargo proteins
