Speed-up via Quantum Sampling
The Markov Chain Monte Carlo method is at the heart of efficient
approximation schemes for a wide range of problems in combinatorial enumeration
and statistical physics. It is therefore very natural and important to
determine whether quantum computers can speed-up classical mixing processes
based on Markov chains. To this end, we present a new quantum algorithm, making
it possible to prepare a quantum sample, i.e., a coherent version of the
stationary distribution of a reversible Markov chain. Our algorithm has a
significantly better running time than that of a previous algorithm based on
adiabatic state generation. We also show that our methods provide a speed-up
over a recently proposed method for obtaining ground states of (classical)
Hamiltonians.Comment: 8 pages, fixed some minor typo

Which Extratropical Cyclones Contribute Most to the Transport of Moisture in the Southern Hemisphere?
Predicted changes in Southern Hemisphere (SH) precipitation and Antarctic ice mass correspond to variations in the meridional moisture flux (MMF). Thirty-five years of ERA-Interim reanalysis data are combined with an extratropical cyclone (ETC) identification and tracking algorithm to investigate factors controlling SH MMF variability in the midlatitudes and near Antarctica. ETC characteristics which exert the strongest control on ETC MMF are determined thus identifying which ETCs contribute most to SH moisture transport. ETC poleward propagation speed exerts the strongest control on the ETC MMF across the Antarctic coastline. In SH winter, ETCs with the largest poleward propagation speeds transport 2.5 times more moisture than an average ETC. In the midlatitudes, ETC genesis latitude and poleward propagation speed have a similar influence on ETC MMF. Surprisingly, ETC maximum vorticity has little control on ETC MMF. Cyclone compositing is used to determine the reasons for these statistical relationships. ETCs generally exhibit a dipole of poleward and equatorward MMF downstream and upstream of the cyclone center, respectively. However, ETCs with the largest poleward propagation speeds resemble open frontal waves with strong poleward moisture transport downstream of the cyclone center only and thus result in the largest MMF. These results suggest that inhomogeneous trends and predicted changes in precipitation over Antarctica may be due to changes in cyclone track orientation, associated with changes to the large-scale background flow, in addition to changes in cyclone number or intensity.Peer reviewe
Density of states and Fisher's zeros in compact U(1) pure gauge theory
We present high-accuracy calculations of the density of states using
multicanonical methods for lattice gauge theory with a compact gauge group U(1)
on 4^4, 6^4 and 8^4 lattices. We show that the results are consistent with weak
and strong coupling expansions. We present methods based on Chebyshev
interpolations and Cauchy theorem to find the (Fisher's) zeros of the partition
function in the complex beta=1/g^2 plane. The results are consistent with
reweighting methods whenever the latter are accurate. We discuss the volume
dependence of the imaginary part of the Fisher's zeros, the width and depth of
the plaquette distribution at the value of beta where the two peaks have equal
height. We discuss strategies to discriminate between first and second order
transitions and explore them with data at larger volume but lower statistics.
Higher statistics and even larger lattices are necessary to draw strong
conclusions regarding the order of the transition.Comment: 14 pages, 16 figure
Quantification of soil mapping by digital analysis of LANDSAT data
Soil survey mapping units are designed such that the dominant soil represents the major proportion of the unit. At times, soil mapping delineations do not adequately represent conditions as stated in the mapping unit descriptions. Digital analysis of LANDSAT multispectral scanner (MSS) data provides a means of accurately describing and quantifying soil mapping unit composition. Digital analysis of LANDSAT MSS data collected on 9 June 1973 was used to prepare a spectral soil map for a 430-hectare area in Clinton County, Indiana. Fifteen spectral classes were defined, representing 12 soil and 3 vegetation classes. The 12 soil classes were grouped into 4 moisture regimes based upon their spectral responses; the 3 vegetation classes were grouped into one all-inclusive class
Patent Institutions: Shifting Interactions Between Legal Actors
This contribution to the Research Handbook on Economics of Intellectual Property Rights (Vol. 1 Theory) addresses interactions between the principal legal institutions of the U.S. patent system. It considers legal, strategic, and normative perspectives on these interactions as they have evolved over the last 35 years. Early centralization of power by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, newly created in 1982, established a regime dominated by the appellate court\u27s bright-line rules. More recently, aggressive Supreme Court and Congressional intervention have respectively reinvigorated patent law standards and led to significant devolution of power to inferior tribunals, including newly created tribunals like the USPTO\u27s Patent Trial and Appeals Board. This new era in institutional interaction creates a host of fresh empirical and normative research questions for scholars. The contribution concludes by outlining a research agenda
Semantic analysis of field sports video using a petri-net of audio-visual concepts
The most common approach to automatic summarisation and highlight detection in sports video is to train an automatic classifier to detect semantic highlights based on occurrences of low-level features such as action replays, excited commentators or changes in a scoreboard. We propose an alternative approach based on the detection of perception concepts (PCs) and the construction of Petri-Nets which can be used for both semantic description and event detection within sports videos. Low-level algorithms for the detection of perception concepts using visual, aural and motion characteristics are proposed, and a series of Petri-Nets composed of perception concepts is formally defined to describe video content. We call this a Perception Concept Network-Petri Net (PCN-PN) model. Using PCN-PNs, personalized high-level semantic descriptions of video highlights can be facilitated and queries on high-level semantics can be achieved. A particular strength of this framework is that we can easily build semantic detectors based on PCN-PNs to search within sports videos and locate interesting events. Experimental results based on recorded sports
video data across three types of sports games (soccer, basketball and rugby), and each from multiple broadcasters, are used to illustrate the potential of this framework
The Partition Function of Multicomponent Log-Gases
We give an expression for the partition function of a one-dimensional log-gas
comprised of particles of (possibly) different integer charge at inverse
temperature {\beta} = 1 (restricted to the line in the presence of a
neutralizing field) in terms of the Berezin integral of an associated non-
homogeneous alternating tensor. This is the analog of the de Bruijn integral
identities [3] (for {\beta} = 1 and {\beta} = 4) ensembles extended to
multicomponent ensembles.Comment: 14 page
Mid-infrared quantum optics in silicon
Applied quantum optics stands to revolutionise many aspects of information
technology, provided performance can be maintained when scaled up. Silicon
quantum photonics satisfies the scaling requirements of miniaturisation and
manufacturability, but at 1.55 m it suffers from unacceptable linear and
nonlinear loss. Here we show that, by translating silicon quantum photonics to
the mid-infrared, a new quantum optics platform is created which can
simultaneously maximise manufacturability and miniaturisation, while minimising
loss. We demonstrate the necessary platform components: photon-pair generation,
single-photon detection, and high-visibility quantum interference, all at
wavelengths beyond 2 m. Across various regimes, we observe a maximum net
coincidence rate of 448 12 Hz, a coincidence-to-accidental ratio of 25.7
1.1, and, a net two photon quantum interference visibility of 0.993
0.017. Mid-infrared silicon quantum photonics will bring new quantum
applications within reach.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; revised figures, updated discussion in section 3,
