    Comparison of measurement methods of the front velocity of small-scale debris flows

    Debris flow is a gravity-driven process, which is characterized by a travelling dense surge including large boulders, and it is followed by a more fluid tail. These characteristics make difficult the measurement of the mean flow velocity by means of common hydraulic techniques. Different methods can be used at real scale and small-scale to measure the front velocity but a dedicate comparison between available methods is still lacking. This research aims to compare the front velocity measurements in the transport zone of a miniature debris flow using three devices: i) a common digital video camera (29 frames per second); ii) a high speed thermo camera (60 fps); and iii) a laser photoelectric sensors system. The statistical analysis of data has highlighted no significant differences exist between front velocities obtained by means of the video camera and the thermo camera, whereas photocells data statistically differ from those achieved via the other systems. Some lack of data recorded by photocell was documented, while the thermo camera technique did not show significant loss of information being also helpful to detect the kinematic behaviour of single particles. Finally, the tests confirmed the influence of the solid volumetric concentration in the debris-flow mechanics, which promotes, ceteris paribus, the debris-flow slowing down

    Prognostic factors influencing infectious complications after cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC. Results from a tertiary referral center

    Background. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) showed promising results in selected patients. High morbidity restrains its wide application. The aim of this study was to report postoperative infectious complications and investigate possible correlations with preoperative nutritional status and other prognostic factors in patients with peritoneal metastases treated with CRS and HIPEC. Methods. For the study we reviewed the clinical records of all patients with peritoneal metastases from different primary cancers and treated by CRS and HIPEC in our Institution from November 2000 to December 2017. Patients were divided according to their nutritional status (SGA) in group A (well-nourished), B/C (mild or severely malnourished). Possible statistical correlations between risk factors and postoperative complications rates have been investigated by univariate and multivariate analysis. Results. Two hundred patients were selected and underwent CRS and HIPEC during the study period. Postoperative complications occurred in 44% of the patients, 35.3% in SGA-A patients and 53% in SGA-B /C patients. Cause of complications was infective in 42, non-infective in 37 and HIPEC related in 9 patients. Infectious complications occurred more frequently in SGA-B /C patients (32.6% vs. 9.8% of SGA-A patients). The most frequent sites of infection were Surgical Site Infections (SSI, 35.7%) and Central Line Associated BloodStream Infections (CLABSI, 26.2%). The most frequent isolated species was Candida (22.8%). ASA score, blood loss, performance status, PCI, large bowel resection, postoperative serum albumin levels and nutritional status correlated with higher risk for postoperative infectious complications. Conclusions. Malnourished patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy are more prone to post-operative infectious complications and adequate perioperative nutritional support should be considered, including immune-enhancing nutrition. Sequential monitoring of common sites of infection, antifungal prevention of candidiasis, and careful patient selection should be implemented to reduce complications rate

    Dendritic Computation through Exploiting Resistive Memory as both Delays and Weights

    Biological neurons can detect complex spatio-temporal features in spiking patterns via their synapses spread across their dendritic branches. This is achieved by modulating the efficacy of the individual synapses, and by exploiting the temporal delays of their response to input spikes, depending on their position on the dendrite. Inspired by this mechanism, we propose a neuromorphic hardware architecture equipped with multiscale dendrites, each of which has synapses with tunable weight and delay elements. Weights and delays are both implemented using Resistive Random Access Memory (RRAM). We exploit the variability in the high resistance state of RRAM to implement a distribution of delays in the millisecond range for enabling spatio-temporal detection of sensory signals. We demonstrate the validity of the approach followed with a RRAM-aware simulation of a heartbeat anomaly detection task. In particular we show that, by incorporating delays directly into the network, the network's power and memory footprint can be reduced by up to 100x compared to equivalent state-of-the-art spiking recurrent networks with no delays

    Antimicrobial activity of supramolecular salts of gallium(III) and proflavine and the intriguing case of a trioxalate complex

    The use of the gallium oxalate complex [Ga(ox)(3)](3-) as a building block in the formation of a drug-drug salt with the antimicrobial agent proflavine (PF) as its proflavinium cation (HPF+), namely [HPF](3)[Ga(ox)(3)]center dot 4H(2)O, is reported together with the preparation of the potassium salt K-3[Ga(ox)(3)] and the novel dimeric gallium(III) salt K-4[Ga-2(ox)(4)(mu-OH)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O. All compounds have been characterized by solid state methods, and their performance as antimicrobial agents has been evaluated by disk diffusion assay against the bacteria strains Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923, and Escherichia coli ATCC25922. While the [HPF](3)[Ga(ox)(3)]center dot 4H(2)O drug-drug salt is effective against all three strains, the gallium oxalate salt K-3[Ga(ox)(3)] showed impressive selectivity towards P. aeruginosa, with little to no antimicrobial activity against the other two organisms.     Questo rapporto di fine progetto presenta i dati relativi al “Master regionale in tutela dell’ambiente marino e oceanografia - MARAMBO” finanziato dell'ambito dell'Avviso 1/2012 del PO “FSE” Sicilia 2017-2013. Il progetto formativo ha previsto attività di formazione e training on the job a 8 allievi per un periodo di 12 mesi (1200 ore), con l'obiettivo generale di rafforzare il sistema regionale siciliano della ricerca scientifica-tecnologica e dell’alta formazione ad essa relativa. L'obiettivo specifico, invece, è stato quello di creare competenze specialistiche ed interdisciplinari per il monitoraggio e la tutela dell’ambiente marino, ovvero la macro-area di interesse dell'IAMC-CNR. Il rapporto ripercorre le attività del progetto formativo, le relative tempistiche e modalità esecutive ed i moduli formativi nel dettaglio. Vengono altresì sottolineati gli aspetti innovativi in termini di training on the job, work experiences, attività di laboratorio e collaterali nelle quali gli allievi sono stati coinvolti. Il rapporto si conclude con alcune considerazioni finali, la presentazione dei dati di placement a fine corso e di raggiungimento degli obiettivi previsti, alla luce dalle caratteristiche e dei limiti imposti dall'Avviso 1/2012

    Engineering plastic phase transitions via solid solutions: the case of “reordering frustration” in ionic plastic crystals of hydroxyquinuclidinium salts

    A family of salts of R-(+)-(3)-hydroxyquinuclidinium [QH]+, with SO42−, BPh4−, BF4− and PF6− counter-anions, have been prepared by the metathesis of [QH]Cl and metal salts of the corresponding anions. Solid solutions of formula [QH](PF6)x(BF4)1−x for x = 0.9, 0.8, 0.7 have also been obtained. The crystalline materials have been investigated by a combination of solid-state techniques, including variable temperature XRD, thermal analyses, multinuclear (11B, 13C, 15N, 19F, and 31P) solid-state NMR spectroscopy, variable temperature wideline 19F T1 relaxation measurements, and micro-Raman spectroscopy to investigate their thermal stability and phase transition behaviors. It has been shown that the salts [QH]PF6 and [QH]BF4 undergo an order–disorder solid–solid phase transition to plastic phases, whereas [QH]2SO4·H2O and [QH]BPh4 do not display any plastic phase transition. Doping [QH]BF4 into the [QH]PF6 lattice up to 30% results in the formation of a solid solution that is plastic in an expanded thermal range, thanks to a phenomenon that we describe here for the first time as “reordering frustration”

    Usefulness of Ultrasound Imaging in Detecting Psoriatic Arthritis of Fingers and Toes in Patients with Psoriasis

    Background. Given that clinical evaluation may underestimate the joint damage and that early treatment can slow down psoriatic arthritis (PsA) progression, screening psoriasis patients with imaging tools that can depict early PsA changes would entail clear benefits. Objective. To compare the ability of X-ray and ultrasound (US) examination in detecting morphological abnormalities consistent with early PsA in patients with psoriasis, using rheumatological evaluation as the gold standard for diagnosis. Methods. Patients with chronic plaque psoriasis and no previous PsA diagnosis attending our outpatient dermatology clinic and reporting finger/toe joint and/or tendon pain underwent X-ray and US evaluation; they were subsequently referred to a rheumatologist for clinical examination and review of imaging findings. Results. Abnormal US and/or X-ray findings involving at least one finger and/or toe (joints and/or tendons) were seen in 36/52 patients: 11 had one or more X-ray abnormalities, including erosion, joint space narrowing, new bone formation, periarticular soft tissue swelling, and periarticular osteoporosis; 36 had suspicious changes on US. Conclusion. US proved valuable in detecting joint and/or tendon abnormalities in the fingers and toes of patients with suspicious changes. The dermatologist should consider US to obtain an accurate assessment of suspicious findings

    Off-label long acting injectable antipsychotics in real-world clinical practice: a cross-sectional analysis of prescriptive patterns from the STAR Network DEPOT study

    Introduction: Information on the off-label use of Long-Acting Injectable (LAI) antipsychotics in the real world is lacking. In this study, we aimed to identify the sociodemographic and clinical features of patients treated with on- vs off-label LAIs and predictors of off-label First- or Second-Generation Antipsychotic (FGA vs. SGA) LAI choice in everyday clinical practice. Method: In a naturalistic national cohort of 449 patients who initiated LAI treatment in the STAR Network Depot Study, two groups were identified based on off- or on-label prescriptions. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to test several clinically relevant variables and identify those associated with the choice of FGA vs SGA prescription in the off-label group. Results: SGA LAIs were more commonly prescribed in everyday practice, without significant differences in their on- and off-label use. Approximately 1 in 4 patients received an off-label prescription. In the off-label group, the most frequent diagnoses were bipolar disorder (67.5%) or any personality disorder (23.7%). FGA vs SGA LAI choice was significantly associated with BPRS thought disorder (OR = 1.22, CI95% 1.04 to 1.43, p = 0.015) and hostility/suspiciousness (OR = 0.83, CI95% 0.71 to 0.97, p = 0.017) dimensions. The likelihood of receiving an SGA LAI grew steadily with the increase of the BPRS thought disturbance score. Conversely, a preference towards prescribing an FGA was observed with higher scores at the BPRS hostility/suspiciousness subscale. Conclusion: Our study is the first to identify predictors of FGA vs SGA choice in patients treated with off-label LAI antipsychotics. Demographic characteristics, i.e. age, sex, and substance/alcohol use co-morbidities did not appear to influence the choice towards FGAs or SGAs. Despite a lack of evidence, clinicians tend to favour FGA over SGA LAIs in bipolar or personality disorder patients with relevant hostility. Further research is needed to evaluate treatment adherence and clinical effectiveness of these prescriptive patterns
