A method for silica-coating at the nanoscale by electrophoretic deposition is presented here, using raw or grafted silica dispersions

Innate immune basis for rift valley fever susceptibility in mouse models

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) leads to varied clinical manifestations in animals and in humans that range from moderate fever to fatal illness, suggesting that host immune responses are important determinants of the disease severity. We investigated the immune basis for the extreme susceptibility of MBT/Pas mice that die with mild to acute hepatitis by day 3 post-infection compared to more resistant BALB/cByJ mice that survive up to a week longer. Lower levels of neutrophils observed in the bone marrow and blood of infected MBT/Pas mice are unlikely to be causative of increased RVFV susceptibility as constitutive neutropenia in specific mutant mice did not change survival outcome. However, whereas MBT/Pas mice mounted an earlier inflammatory response accompanied by higher amounts of interferon (IFN)-α in the serum compared to BALB/cByJ mice, they failed to prevent high viral antigen load. Several immunological alterations were uncovered in infected MBT/Pas mice compared to BALB/cByJ mice, including low levels of leukocytes that expressed type I IFN receptor subunit 1 (IFNAR1) in the blood, spleen and liver, delayed leukocyte activation and decreased percentage of IFN-γ-producing leukocytes in the blood. These observations are consistent with the complex mode of inheritance of RVFV susceptibility in genetic studies

Microradiographic and histological evaluation of the bone-screw and bone-plate interface of orthodontic miniplates in patients

SummaryObjectives: To describe the tissue reactions at the bone-titanium interface of orthodontic miniplates in humans. Materials and methods: Forty-two samples, consisting of tissue fragments attached or not to miniplates or their fixation screws, were collected from 24 orthodontic patients treated with miniplate anchorage, at the time of removal of their miniplates. The samples were embedded in methylmethacrylate and cut into undecalcified sections which were submitted to microradiographic analysis. The sections were also stained and examined under ordinary light. Results: Three types of reactions were observed both on the histological sections and on the microradiographs. 1. The majority of the stable miniplates were easy to remove (34/42). The tissue samples collected consisted mainly in mature lamellar bone with some medullary spaces containing blood vessels, 2. two screws were highly osseointegrated and required the surgeon to remove them by trephining (2/42). They were surrounded by bone tissue which extended to the miniplate. The histological features were similar to the previous group, though the bone-screw contact was higher, and 3. in six samples obtained after unstable miniplate removal during the treatment, we observed either some woven bone trabeculae or loose connective tissue, without any histological sign of inflammation. Limitations and Conclusion: For evident ethical reasons, our data were limited by the size of the tissue fragments and the limited number of patients and variety of clinical presentations. The healing reactions consisted mainly in mature lamellar bone tissue sparsely in contact with the screw or the miniplate, with signs of a moderate remodelling activit

A physician-physiotherapist collaborative model in a family medicine teaching clinic

    Get PDF
Persons with musculoskeletal disorders frequently seek care in family medicine clinics. However, musculoskeletal education provided in medical schools is often considered insufficient. The implementation of a collaborative model that integrates physiotherapists into teaching clinics may benefit the musculoskeletal training of medical residents. This paper describes a model developed in a family medicine teaching clinic by examining the interprofessional educational and collaborative activities implemented in this model. The model allowed to provide physiotherapy services, involve the physiotherapist in the training of family medicine residents and enhance interprofessional collaboration, particularly for the management of persons with musculoskeletal disorders._____Les personnes ayant des troubles musculosquelettiques consultent fréquemment en cliniques de médecine de famille.

Nanoarchitectured 3D cathodes for Li-Ion microbatteries

Microbatteries with large area capacity and no power limitation can be obtained by designing 3D structured batteries. 3D electrodes composed of 30 nm-thick films of LiCoO2 coating free-standing columns of Al current collector were achieved. By comparison with a planar electrode presenting an equivalent nominal capacity, a 3D electrode exhibits improved capacity retention: 68% of the nominal capacity at 8C instead of 11%

Electrochemical Method for Direct Deposition of Nanometric Bismuth and Its Electrochemical Properties vs Li

    Get PDF
We report that nanometric bismuth can directly be electrodeposited at room temperature without the use of a nanoporous template. The morphology, microstructure, and purity of the as-prepared electrodeposits were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. Typically, well-crystallized nanometer-sized particles of Bi ranging from 10 to 20 nm are obtained. The key to success of such a process lies in the electrochemical coreduction of pyrocatechol violet during the bismuth deposition, which disturbs the electrocrystallization process. As a first possible application, we show that Bi/Cu nanoarchitectured electrodes exhibit interesting rate capabilities when used as electrode material vs Li
