    A high-frequency servosystem for fuel control in hypersonic engines

    A hydrogen fuel-flow valve with an electrohydraulic servosystem is described. An analysis of the servosystem is presented along with a discussion of the limitations imposed on system performance by nonlinearities. The response of the valve to swept-frequency inputs is experimentally determined and compared with analytical results obtained from a computer model. The valve is found to perform favorably for frequencies up to 200 Hz

    A delay logistic equation with variable growth rate

    A logistic equation with distributed delay is considered in the case where the growth rate oscillates sinusoidally about a positive mean value. A delay kernel is chosen which admits bifurcation of the equilibrium state into a periodic solution when the growth rate is constant. It is shown that the fluctuations in growth rate modulate the bifurcation into a quasiperiodic solution. In certain circumstances, however, it is shown that frequency locking can occur but that this is a local phenomenon which does not persist outside the immediate vicinity of the bifurcation point

    The NASA Lewis integrated propulsion and flight control simulator

    A new flight simulation facility was developed at NASA-Lewis. The purpose of this flight simulator is to allow integrated propulsion control and flight control algorithm development and evaluation in real time. As a preliminary check of the simulator facility capabilities and correct integration of its components, the control design and physics models for a short take-off and vertical landing fighter aircraft model were shown, with their associated system integration and architecture, pilot vehicle interfaces, and display symbology. The initial testing and evaluation results show that this fixed based flight simulator can provide real time feedback and display of both airframe and propulsion variables for validation of integrated flight and propulsion control systems. Additionally, through the use of this flight simulator, various control design methodologies and cockpit mechanizations can be tested and evaluated in a real time environment

    Analytical Model of Proportional Fair Scheduling in Interference-limited OFDMA/LTE Networks

    Various system tasks like interference coordination, handover decisions, admission control etc. in upcoming cellular networks require precise mid-term (spanning over a few seconds) performance models. Due to channel-dependent scheduling at the base station, these performance models are not simple to obtain. Furthermore, upcoming cellular systems will be interference-limited, hence, the way interference is modeled is crucial for the accuracy. In this paper we present an analytical model for the SINR distribution of the \textit{scheduled} subcarriers of an OFDMA system with proportional fair scheduling. The model takes the precise SINR distribution into account. We furthermore refine our model with respect to uniform modulation and coding, as applied in LTE networks. The derived models are validated by means of simulations. In additon, we show that our models are approximate estimators for the performance of rate-based proportional fair scheduling, while they outperform some simpler prediction models from related work significantly.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures.     Towards optimization of pulsed sodium laser guide stars

    Pulsed sodium laser guide stars (LGS) are useful because they allow for Rayleigh blanking and fratricide avoidance in multiple-LGS systems. Bloch-equation simulations of sodium-light interactions show that these may be able to achieve photon returns nearly equal to, and in some cases greater than, what is seen from continuous-wave (CW) excitation. In this work, we study the time-dependent characteristics of sodium fluorescence, and investigate the optimal format for the new fiber laser LGS that will be part of the upgraded adaptive optics (AO) system on the Shane telescope at Mt. Hamilton. Results of this analysis are examined in the context of their general applicability to other LGS systems and the potential benefits of uplink correction are considered.     Why do Nigerian manufacturing firms take action on AIDS?

It is intended to help the Center and individual authors to disseminate work that is being prepared for journal publication or that is not appropriate for journal publication but might still have value to readers.OBJECTIVE: To identify differences between manufacturing firms in Nigeria that have undertaken HIV/AIDS prevention activities and those that have not as a step toward improving the targeting of HIV policies and interventions. METHODS: A survey of a representative sample of registered manufacturing firms in Nigeria, stratified by location, workforce size, and industrial sector. The survey was administered to managers of 232 firms representing most major industrial areas and sectors in March-April 2001. RESULTS: 45.3 percent of the firms’ managers received information about HIV/AIDS from a source outside the firm in 2000; 7.7 percent knew of an employee who was HIV-positive at the time of the survey; and 13.6 percent knew of an employee who had left the firm and/or died in service due to AIDS. Only 31.7 percent of firms took any action to prevent HIV among employees in 2000, and 23.9 percent had discussed the epidemic as a potential business concern. The best correlates of having taken action on HIV were knowledge of an HIV-positive employee or having lost an employee to AIDS (odds ratio [OR] 6.36, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.30, 17.57) and receiving information about the disease from an outside source (OR 7.83, 95% CI: 3.46, 17.69). CONCLUSIONS: Despite a nationwide HIV seroprevalence of 5.8 percent, as of 2001 most Nigerian manufacturing firm managers did not regard HIV/AIDS as a serious problem and had neither taken any action on it nor discussed it as a business issue. Providing managers with accurate, relevant information about the epidemic and practical prevention interventions might strengthen the business response to AIDS in countries like Nigeria

    Establishing a Cotton-Ginning Cooperative in the Southeast

    The producer-members of the proposed Albemarle Cotton Growers Cooperative presently experience costly and dangerous conditions in transporting seed cotton to distant ginning sites. These growers seek to acquire locally a cooperatively owned and operated cotton gin. This study of the proposed venture reports on producer surveys and financial projections, and estimates member benefits and return on investment. This cotton-ginning cooperative may considerably improve the net farm incomes of local producers. The feasibility analysis concludes that it is possible for these North Carolina growers to earn a respectable return on their cooperative investment. However, firm volume and equity commitments on the part of growers will be required.     Constrained Kalman Filtering via Density Function Truncation for Turbofan Engine Health Estimation

    Kalman filters are often used to estimate the state variables of a dynamic system. However, in the application of Kalman filters some known signal information is often either ignored or dealt with heuristically. For instance, state variable constraints (which may be based on physical considerations) are often neglected because they do not fit easily into the structure of the Kalman filter. This article develops an analytic method of incorporating state variable inequality constraints in the Kalman filter. The resultant filter truncates the probability density function (PDF) of the Kalman filter estimate at the known constraints and then computes the constrained filter estimate as the mean of the truncated PDF. The incorporation of state variable constraints increases the computational effort of the filter but also improves its estimation accuracy. The improvement is demonstrated via simulation results obtained from a turbofan engine model. It is also shown that the truncated Kalman filter may provide a more accurate way of incorporating inequality constraints than other constrained filters (e.g. the projection approach to constrained filtering)
