Major Galaxy Mergers Only Trigger the Most Luminous AGN
Using multiwavelength surveys of active galactic nuclei across a wide range
of bolometric luminosities (10^{43}<L_{bol}(erg/s<5x10^{46}) and redshifts
(0<z<3), we find a strong, redshift-independent correlation between the AGN
luminosity and the fraction of host galaxies undergoing a major merger. That
is, only the most luminous AGN phases are connected to major mergers, while
less luminous AGN appear to be driven by secular processes. Combining this
trend with AGN luminosity functions to assess the overall cosmic growth of
black holes, we find that ~50% by mass is associated with major mergers, while
only 10% of AGN by number, the most luminous, are connected to these violent
events. Our results suggest that to reach the highest AGN luminosities -where
the most massive black holes accreted the bulk of their mass - a major merger
appears to be required. The luminosity dependence of the fraction of AGN
triggered by major mergers can successfully explain why the observed scatter in
the M-\sigma relation for elliptical galaxies is significantly lower than in
spirals. The lack of a significant redshift dependence of the
L_{bol}-f_{merger} relation suggests that downsizing, i.e., the general decline
in AGN and star formation activity with decreasing redshift, is driven by a
decline in the frequency of major mergers combined with a decrease in the

Transformation of stimulus correlations by the retina
Redundancies and correlations in the responses of sensory neurons seem to
waste neural resources but can carry cues about structured stimuli and may help
the brain to correct for response errors. To assess how the retina negotiates
this tradeoff, we measured simultaneous responses from populations of ganglion
cells presented with natural and artificial stimuli that varied greatly in
correlation structure. We found that pairwise correlations in the retinal
output remained similar across stimuli with widely different spatio-temporal
correlations including white noise and natural movies. Meanwhile, purely
spatial correlations tended to increase correlations in the retinal response.
Responding to more correlated stimuli, ganglion cells had faster temporal
kernels and tended to have stronger surrounds. These properties of individual
cells, along with gain changes that opposed changes in effective contrast at
the ganglion cell input, largely explained the similarity of pairwise
correlations across stimuli where receptive field measurements were possible.Comment: author list corrected in metadat
Water bathing alters threat perception in starlings.
The majority of bird taxa perform water bathing, but little is known about the adaptive value of this behaviour. If bathing is important for feather maintenance then birds that have not bathed should have poorer feather condition, compromised escape ability and therefore increased responsiveness to cues of predation. We conducted two experiments examining the behaviour of captive starlings responding to conspecific alarm calls. Birds that had no access to bathing water showed a decreased willingness to feed and increased their vigilance behaviour following an alarm call. We argue that birds denied access to bathing water interpreted an ambiguous cue of threat as requiring more caution than birds that had access, consistent with higher levels of anxiety. Strategic Shift to a Diagnostic Model of Care in a Multi-Site Group Dental Practice.
BackgroundDocumenting standardized dental diagnostic terms represents an emerging change for how dentistry is practiced. We focused on a mid-sized dental group practice as it shifted to a policy of documenting patients' diagnoses using standardized terms in the electronic health record.MethodsKotter's change framework was translated into interview questions posed to the senior leadership in a mid-size dental group practice. In addition, quantitative content analyses were conducted on the written policies and forms before and after the implementation of standardized diagnosis documentation to assess the extent to which the forms and policies reflected the shift. Three reviewers analyzed the data individually and reached consensuses where needed.ResultsKotter's guiding change framework explained the steps taken to 97 percent utilization rate of the Electronic Health Record and Dental Diagnostic Code. Of the 96 documents included in the forms and policy analysis, 31 documents were officially updated but only two added a diagnostic element.ConclusionChange strategies established in the business literature hold utility for dental practices seeking diagnosis-centered care.Practical implicationsA practice that shifts to a diagnosis-driven care philosophy would be best served by ensuring that the change process follows a leadership framework that is calibrated to the organization's culture
Equity and career-life balance in marine mammal science?
It is widely acknowledged that family and care-giving responsibilities are driving women away from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Marine mammal science often incurs heavy fieldwork and travel obligations, which make it a challenging career in which to find work-life balance. This opinion piece explores gender equality, equity (the principles of fairness that lead to equality), and work-life balance in science generally and in this field in particular. We aim to (1) raise awareness of these issues among members of the Society for Marine Mammalogy; (2) explore members’ attitudes and viewpoints collected from an online survey and further discussion at a biennial conference workshop in 2015; and (3) make suggestions for members to consider for action, or for the Board of Governors to consider in terms of changes to policy or procedures. Leaks in our pipeline—the attrition of women, and others with additional caring responsibilities—represent an intellectual and economic loss. By striving for equity and promoting work-life balance, we will help to ensure a healthy and productive Society better able to succeed in its aims promoting education, high quality research, conservation, and management of marine mammals.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Searching for in t \tbar Production
The triple gluon field strength operator represents the only genuinely
gluonic CP conserving term which can appear at dimension-6 within an effective
strong interaction Lagrangian. Previous studies of this operator have revealed
that its effect on gluon scattering is surprisingly difficult to detect. In
this article, we analyze the impact of upon top quark pair production. We
find that it will generate observable cross section deviations from QCD at the
LHC for even relatively small values of its coefficient. Furthermore,
affects the transverse momentum distribution of the produced top quarks more
strongly at high energies than dimension-6 four-quark and chromomagnetic moment
terms in the effective Lagrangian. Top-antitop production at the LHC will
therefore provide a sensitive and clean probe for the elusive triple gluon
