Detection of the Vulnerable Atherosclerotic Plaque. Pre-Clinical Evaluation of Novel PET Imaging Probes With Experimental Models
Atherosclerosis is a life-long vascular inflammatory disease and the leading cause of
death in Finland and in other western societies. The development of atherosclerotic
plaques is progressive and they form when lipids begin to accumulate in the vessel wall.
This accumulation triggers the migration of inflammatory cells that is a hallmark of
vascular inflammation. Often, this plaque will become unstable and form vulnerable
plaque which may rupture causing thrombosis and in the worst case, causing myocardial
infarction or stroke. Identification of these vulnerable plaques before they rupture could
save lives. At present, in the clinic, there exists no appropriated, non-invasive method
for their identification.
The aim of this thesis was to evaluate novel positron emission tomography (PET)
probes for the detection of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques and to characterize, two
mouse models of atherosclerosis. These studies were performed by using ex vivo and in
vivo imaging modalities. The vulnerability of atherosclerotic plaques was evaluated as
expression of active inflammatory cells, namely macrophages.
Age and the duration of high-fat diet had a drastic impact on the development of
atherosclerotic plaques in mice. In imaging of atherosclerosis, 6-month-old mice, kept
on high-fat diet for 4 months, showed matured, metabolically active, atherosclerotic
plaques. [18F]FDG and 68Ga were accumulated in the areas representative of vulnerable
plaques. However, the slow clearance of 68Ga limits its use for the plaque imaging. The
novel synthesized [68Ga]DOTA-RGD and [18F]EF5 tracers demonstrated efficient uptake
in plaques as compared to the healthy vessel wall, but the pharmacokinetic properties of
these tracers were not optimal in used models.
In conclusion, these studies resulted in the identification of new strategies for the
assessment of plaque stability and mouse models of atherosclerosis which could be used
for plaque imaging. In the used probe panel, [18F]FDG was the best tracer for plaque
imaging. However, further studies are warranted to clarify the applicability of [18F]EF5
and [68Ga]DOTA-RGD for imaging of atherosclerosis with other experimental models.Siirretty Doriast

Laser, radiofrequency or tympanostomy knife? : Comparison of surgical methods in tympanostomy treatment of young children and predictive value of tympanometry
Objectives: To investigate tympanostomy tube (TT) treatment in young children, with special interest in bloodless surgical methods (laser and radiofrequency), myringosclerosis formation and tympanometric testing. Methods: This prospective study includes 76 children whose 121 ears with middle ear effusion were treated with tympanostomy tubes. Myringotomy was performed with CO2 laser in 37, radiofrequency in 40 and myringotomy knife in 44 ears. The ears were evaluated with otomicroscopy and tympanometry preoperatively and post-operatively every 3-4 months until spontaneous tube extrusion. Results: All tubes extruded spontaneously (mean 12.8 months, range 3-36 months), with no persistent perfora-tions or cholesteatomas. CO2 laser and radiofrequency inserted tympanostomy tubes extruded faster (mean 11 months) compared to incisional myringotomy (mean 15 months, p = 0.002). Myringosclerosis was noted in 25 (21%) ears after treatment. There was a tendency to less myringosclerosis with bloodless techniques, but the difference was not significant. Flat tympanograms on the day of procedure predicted continuation of ventilation problems also after TT treatment (p = 0.003). Ears with preoperative type B tympanogram had significantly more myringosclerosis 21/75 (28%) compared with type A and C tympanograms 4/41 (10%) (p = 0.032).Conclusions: While all myringotomy methods were effective and safe, the traditional incisional myringotomy with a tympanostomy knife is still a good, feasible and cost-effective myringotomy method. No surgical removal of tympanostomy tubes is needed before 3 years of uncomplicated tympanostomy treatment. Tympanometry turned out to be a useful tool in prediction of post TT treatment ventilation problems of the middle ear.Peer reviewe

COMPARISON OF TWO NOVEL LIST SPHERE DETECTOR ALGORITHMS FOR MIMO-OFDM SYSTEMS
In this paper, the complexity and performance of two novel list sphere detector (LSD) algorithms are studied and evaluated in multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system. The LSDs are based on the K-best and the Schnorr-Euchner enumeration (SEE) algorithms. The required list sizes for LSD algorithms are determined for a 2×2 system with 4- quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), 16-QAM, and 64-QAM. The complexity of the algorithms is compared by studying the number of visited nodes per received symbol vector by the algorithm in computer simulations. The SEE based LSD algorithm is found to be a less complex and a feasible choice for implementation compared to the K-best based LSD algorithm.ElekrobitNokiaTexas InstrumentsFinnish Funding Agency for Technology and InnovationTeke
Uudenkaupungin radan matkustajajunaliikenteen oletetut vaikutukset radanvarsikunnissa
Uudenkaupungin rata on Turun päärautatieaseman ja Uudenkaupungin Hangonsaaren välinen
Suomen rataverkon rataosuus. Matkustajaliikenne radalla lopetettiin vuoden 1992 lopussa, jonka
jälkeen rata on palvellut lähinnä tavarajunaliikennettä. Suunnitelmia matkustajaliikenteen
palauttamisesta on tehty 2000-luvulta lähtien ja myös vuonna 2019 aloitetun radan sähköistystyön
on katsottu rakentavan pohjaa matkustajaliikenteen palauttamiselle. Pelkät liikenteelliset hyödyt
riittävät kuitenkin nykyaikana harvoin suurien liikenteellisten investointien perusteluiksi ja
liikenneinvestoinneilta vaaditaan pidemmälle johdettuja, esimerkiksi aluetaloudellisia vaikutuksia.
Tässä tutkielmassa tutkitaan, millaisia erilaisia vaikutuksia liikennöinnillä oletetaan olevan ja miten
nämä oletukset eroavat paitsi eri lähteissä myös alueiden välillä. Aineistona on käytetty rataa
koskevia selvityksiä, sekä tutkimusalueen kunnanvaltuutettujen kyselyä. Tutkielman perusteella
keskeiseksi vaikutukseksi nousee Turun kaupunkiseudun ja Vakka-Suomen seudun yhdistyminen
yhdeksi suureksi kaupunkiseuduksi. Tämä termi sisältää kuitenkin hyvin moninaisia erilaisia
johdannaisvaikutuksia. Selvitysten mukaan junaliikenne muokkaa koko alueen
yhdyskuntarakennetta rataan nojautuvaksi ja keskittää uudisrakentamista radan läheisyyteen.
Alueen kunnanvaltuutetut painottavat junan käyttöä etenkin työmatkaliikenteessä. Turun seudun
valtuutetut painottavat huomattavasti enemmän Uuteenkaupunkiin suuntautuvan työmatkaliikenteen
helpottumista, kun taas vakkasuomalaisten valtuutettujen vastauksissa yksittäiset
vastausvaihtoehdot eivät korostu yhtä vahvasti. Kyselyaineiston perusteella yleinen kiinnostus
hanketta kohtaan on suurempaa Vakka-Suomessa kuin Turun seudulla, jossa esimerkiksi Tunnin
juna -hanke saatetaan priorisoida Turku-Uusikaupunki junahanketta korkeammalle.” The Uusikaupunki railway” is the part of the Finnish railway network between the Turku Central
Railway Station and the island of Hangonsaari in the town of Uusikaupunki. Passenger traffic on
the railway was disbanded in 1992. After this the railway has mainly served the purposes of freight
transport. Different plans to restore the passenger traffic have been made, beginning the early
2000’s, and the electrification of the railway, starting in 2019, has been seen as a prerequisite for the
restoration. However, transport benefits alone are nowadays rarely adequate in the political decision
making to justify large transport investments. The investments are expected to have wider nontransport effects for example on the area’s economy. This thesis studies what kind of different
impacts the passenger traffic on the Uusikaupunki railway is expected to have and how these
expected impacts vary in different regions. This thesis combines information from both the official
reports of the proposed passenger traffic and the enquiry, answered by the communal
councilmembers of the study area. According to this thesis, the passenger traffic is expected to
unify the Vakka-Suomi region with the Turku urban area as one functional urban region. However,
the functional urban region itself is expected to have wider by-products. According to the official
reports, the passenger traffic would change the whole urban structure of the region. This idea,
however, isn’t highlighted in the survey results. The survey on its part highlights the passenger
traffic’s impact on commuting. The councilmembers of the Turku region highlight the benefits of
passenger traffic when commuting between Turku and Uusikaupunki. The councilmembers of
Uusikaupunki and rest of the Vakka-Suomi -region do not highlight any effects as heavily as their
Turku region counterparts. According to the survey, the over-all interest towards the passenger
traffic seems to be higher in Vakka-Suomi than in Turku urban area. The councilmembers of the
Turku area may prioritize other transport projects, such as the” One-hour train” between Turku and

"Stop Asian Hate!": Rasismin diskursiivinen rakentuminen koronaviruspandemian aikaisissa suomalaisissa uutisartikkeleissa
Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on tarkastella, minkälaisia kuvia suomalainen uutismedia luo diskursiivisesti koronaviruspandemian aikaisesta rodullistettuun aasialaistaustaiseen väestöön kohdistuvasta rasismista. Rasismi rodullistettua aasialaistaustaista väestöä kohtaan on lisääntynyt koronaviruspandemian aikana globaalisti. Rodullistettuun aasialaistaustaiseen väestöön on kuitenkin jo ennen koronaviruspandemiaa kohdistunut ennakkoluuloja ja stereotypioita, jotka ovat osaltaan vaikuttaneet rasismin määrän kasvuun pandemian leviämisvaiheessa. Tutkielmassani tutkin suomalaisen uutismedian käyttämää kieltä ja siinä esiintyviä diskursseja, jotka luovat representaatioita rodullistettuun aasialaistaustaiseen väestöön kohdistuvasta rasismista koronaviruspandemian aikana. Teoreettisesti tutkielma perustuu ajatukseen kielen konstruktionistisesta luonteesta sekä kielen kyvystä muokata ja uusintaa sosiaalista todellisuutta.
Tutkimusaineistona toimivat suomalaisen suomenkielisen uutismedian verkossa julkaistut uutisartikkelit, jotka käsittelevät rodullistetun aasialaistaustaisen väestön kohtaamaa rasismia tai siihen liittyvää #StopAsianHate-kansalaisliikehdintää koronaviruspandemian aikana vuosina 2020 ja 2021. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu 20 uutisartikkelista, jotka on kerätty kolmesta uutismediasta. Nämä uutismediat ovat Yle, Helsingin Sanomat ja MTV.
Tarkastelun tuloksena uutisartikkeleista havaitaan kaksi toisilleen vastakkaista päädiskurssia, joiden kautta koronaviruspandemian aikaista rasismia kuvataan.
Aineiston uutisartikkelit välittävät kuvaa rodullistetun aasialaistaustaisen väestön kohtaamasta rasismista koronaviruspandemian aikana ongelmallisena, mutta pääasiassa Yhdysvaltoihin keskittyvänä haasteena, jolle on vaikea löytää pitävää ratkaisua. Suomesta luotu kuva sen sijaan korostaa Suomen näennäistä ekseptionaalisuutta ja irrallisuutta rasismista
Learning analytics for academic paths: student evaluations of two dashboards for study planning and monitoring
An in-depth understanding of student experiences and evaluations of learning analytics dashboards (LADs) is needed to develop supportive learning analytics tools. This study investigates how students (N = 140) evaluated two student-facing LADs as a support for academic path-level self-regulated learning (SRL) through the concrete processes of planning and monitoring studies. Aim of the study was to gain new understanding about student perspectives for LAD use on academic path-level context. The study specifically focused on the student evaluations of the dashboard support and challenges, and the differences of student evaluations based on their self-efficacy beliefs and resource management strategies. The findings revealed that students evaluated dashboard use helpful for their study planning and monitoring, while the challenge aspects mostly included further information needs and development ideas. Students with higher self-efficacy evaluated the dashboards as more helpful for study planning than those with lower self-efficacy, and students with lower help seeking skills evaluated the dashboards as more helpful for study monitoring than those with higher help seeking skills. The results indicate that the design of LAD can help students to focus on different aspects of study planning and monitoring and that students with different beliefs and capabilities might benefit from different LAD designs and use practices. The study provides theory-informed approach for investigating LAD use in academic path-level context and extends current understanding of students as users of LADs
