    Evaluation of Using Semi-Autonomy Features in Mobile Robotic Telepresence Systems

    Mobile robotic telepresence systems used for social interaction scenarios require that users steer robots in a remote environment. As a consequence, a heavy workload can be put on users if they are unfamiliar with using robotic telepresence units. One way to lessen this workload is to automate certain operations performed during a telepresence session in order to assist remote drivers in navigating the robot in new environments. Such operations include autonomous robot localization and navigation to certain points in the home and automatic docking of the robot to the charging station. In this paper we describe the implementation of such autonomous features along with user evaluation study. The evaluation scenario is focused on the first experience on using the system by novice users. Importantly, that the scenario taken in this study assumed that participants have as little as possible prior information about the system.     A Probability Approach to the Study on Uncertainty Effects on Gamma Index Evaluations in Radiation Therapy

    Two datasets of points of known spatial positions and an associated absorbed dose value are often compared for quality assurance purposes in External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT). Some problems usually arise regarding the pass fail criterion to accept both datasets as close enough for practical purposes. Instances of this kind of comparisons are fluence or dose checks for intensity modulated radiation therapy, modelling of a treatment unit in a treatment planning system, and so forth. The gamma index is a figure of merit that can be obtained from both datasets; it is widely used, as well as other indices, as part of a comparison procedure. However, it is recognized that false negatives may take place (there are acceptable cases where a certain number of points do not pass the test) due in part to computation and experimental uncertainty. This work utilizes mathematical methods to analyse comparisons, so that uncertainty can be taken into account. Therefore, false rejections due to uncertainty do not take place and there is no need to expand tolerances to take uncertainty into account. The methods provided are based on the rules of uncertainty propagation and help obtain rigorous pass/fail criteria, based on experimental information

    Developmental changes and novelties in ceratophryid frogs

    The Neotropical frog genera Ceratophrys, Chacophrys and Lepidobatrachus form the monophyletic family Ceratophryidae. Although in- and out-group relationships are not fully resolved, the monophyly of the three genera is well supported by both morphological and molecular data. Much is known about the morphology of the ceratophryids, but there is little comparative information on how modification of a common ancestral developmental pathway played a role in shaping their particular body plans. Herein, we review morphological variation during ceratophryid ontogeny in order to explore the role of development in their evolution. The ceratophryids are collectively characterized by rapid larval development with respect to other anurans, yet the three genera differ in their postmetamorphic growth rates to sexual maturity. Derived traits in the group can be divided into many homoplastic features that evolved in parallel with those of anurans with fossorial/burrowing behaviors in semiarid environments, and apomorphies. Morphological novelties have evolved in their feeding mechanism, which makes them capable of feeding on exceptional large prey. Lepidobatrachus is unusual in having reduced the ecomorphological differences between its larvae and adults. As a result, both the larvae and the frog are similarly able to capture large prey underwater. Some unique features in Lepidobatrachus are differentiated in the tadpole and then exaggerated in the adult (e.g., the posterior displaced jaw articulation) in a manner unobserved in any other anurans.Fil: Fabrezi, Marissa.     En los márgenes de los márgenes: Procesos de individuación y experiencias migratorias de jóvenes en barrios populares del Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires

    En este trabajo presentamos resultados de dos proyectos de investigación financiados, culminados recientemente, y un estudio doctoral en proceso, en el marco de los cuales analizamos los procesos de individuación en jóvenes en diversos barrios vulnerabilizados del Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires. Para la construcción de datos empíricos realizamos entrevistas en profundidad y relatos biográficos, para cuyo análisis seguimos los lineamientos generales de la teoría fundamentada, utilizando como auxiliar el software Atlas.ti. Aquí nos centramos en el estudio de las experiencias migratorias de cinco jóvenes, de entre 16 y 23 años, provenientes de Paraguay. En primer lugar, presentamos algunas herramientas conceptuales utilizadas para el despliegue del problema. Luego abordamos las tensiones presentes en dichas experiencias entre los proyectos individuales, los vínculos afectivos y las condiciones estructurales de los países de origen y destino. En tercer lugar, analizamos las vivencias y las tácticas de los jóvenes frente a situaciones de discriminación y estigmatización. Finalmente, articulamos las categorías y proposiciones presentadas reflexionando sobre los posibles aportes de la sociología de la individuación y el enfoque biográfico para la visibilización y abordaje –desde la investigación social y las políticas públicas– de los procesos de vulnerabilidad de jóvenes migrantes en barrios populares.In this paper we present results of two research funded projects recently culminated and a doctoral study in process, in which we analyze the individuation processes in young people in different vulnerabilized neighborhoods of the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires. The empirical data was constructed using deep interviews and life story as methodological tools, following for this analysis the general guidelines of grounded theory and using Atlas.ti software assistant. Here we focus on the study of migratory experiences of five young people from Paraguay, aged between 16 and 23 years old. First, we present some theoretical tools used to display the problem. Then, we address the existing tensions in their experiences among individual projects, emotional relationships and the structural conditions of the countries of origin and destination. In third place, we develop our analysis of the experiences and the tactics of young migrants in situations of discrimination and stigmatization. Finally, we relate the categories and propositions presented, reflecting on the possible contributions of sociology of individuation and biographical approach to the visualization and to address –from social research and public policies– the vulnerability processes of young people migrants in popular neighborhoods.Fil: Di Leo, Pablo Francisco.     In Vitro Toxicity Assessment of Stilbene Extract for Its Potential Use as Antioxidant in the Wine Industry

    The reduction of sulfur dioxide in wine is a consumer’s demand, considering the allergic effects that may occur in people who are sensitive to it. Stilbenes are candidates of great interest for this purpose because of their antioxidant/antimicrobial activities and health properties, and also because they are naturally found in the grapevine. In the present study, the in vitro toxicity of an extract from grapevine shoots (with a stilbene richness of 45.4%) was assessed in two human cell lines. Significant damage was observed from 30 μg/mL after 24 h, and 40 µg/mL after 48 h of exposure. Similarly, the ultrastructural study revealed a significant impairment of cell growing. The extract was able to protect cells against an induced oxidative stress at all concentrations studied. In view of the promising results, a more exhaustive toxicological assessment of the extract is needed to confirm the safety of its further use as additive in wine.España,Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad and INIA for the financial support for this project (RTA2015-00005-C02-02
