Comparison of aerobic capacity determined by the lactate minimum test among guard, forward and forward-center positions in basketball players
To aim of this study was to verify the aerobic capacity by lactate minimum test (LM) among different positions in professional basketball players. Twelve high performance basketball players (12 Major National Leagues, 26.7± 3.2 years) were evaluated by LM. The method of lactate elevation consisted of 6 maximum sprints of 35 m separated by 10 s of recovery each (Running Anaerobic Sprint Test). The progressive phase in LM consisted of 4 periods of 3 min each at 8, 10, 11 and 12 Km/h. After lactate elevation phase and progressive periods, 25μL samples of blood were collected to determine peak lactate (PL) concentration and relative lactate minimum concentration (LACc) respectively. The running speed at the LM was taken when the gradient of the line was zero. Anova one-way statistical was utilized to compare the intensity corresponding LM, LACc and PL (p≤0.05). The velocity (Km/h) of LM did not differ among positions: Guard LM= 9.46±0.17 Km/h; Forward LM= 9.60±0.68 Km/h and Forward-Center LM= 9.64±0.25 Km/h. The LACc did not differ: Guard LM= 3.55±0.51 mmol/L; Forward LM= 3.48±1.63 mmol/L and Forward-Center LM= 4.00±0.43 mmol/L. No changes occurred in PL: Guard LM= 8.35±1.41 mmol/L; Forward LM= 8.16±1.47 mmol/L and Forward-Center LM= 8.76±1.20 mmol/L. Development of a rapid and simple approach for kid carcass evaluation by vídeo image analysis.
objective of this work is the development of a simple and cost-effective video image analysis
(VIA) system to evaluate kid carcass in small slaughter units. To achieve this objective a trial was
conducted with 42 kid carcasses (6.6±2.6 kg) and models to predict carcass composition from VIA
were established. While the carcasses were hanging in the gambrel an image of the dorsal view
of each carcass was obtained with a digital camera (Sony, DCR-TRV460). For imaging, carcasses
were placed in front of a non-glare black surface and illuminated with standard lighting. The
camera was placed perpendicular to the carcass long axis. A total of 44 geometric measurements
(linear and area) were obtained after carcass image analysis with the ImageJ 1.39J software
Haematological and biochemical parameters in Churra-da-Terra-Quente ewes from the northeast of Portugal
Hematological and biochemical parameters, including plasma electrolytes and thyroid hormones, were determined in 73 clinically healthy Churra-da-Terra-Quente ewes, a typical breed from the northeast of Portugal. The hemogram values were: erythrocytes 9.8±1.51012/L; haemoglobin 118.1±19.1g/L; haematocrit 40.8±5.9%; leukocytes 5.7±1.8109/L; and platelets 544.3±177.2109/L. The thrombin time was 17.3±1.7 seconds. The values of biochemical parameters were: total protein 76.4±6.1g/L; glucose 2.87±0.60mmol/L; total cholesterol 1.65±0.33mmol/L; aspartate aminotransferase 155.9±49.2U/L; alanine aminotransferase 23.2±9.6U/L; γ-glutamyl transferase 48.0±18.7U/L; total alkaline phosphatase 121.6±76.1U/L; glutamate dehydrogenase 6.4±3.7U/L; urea 7.32±2.22mmol/L; creatinine 123.0±54.1μmol/L; total calcium 2.53±0.25mmol/L; phosphorus 2.10±0.46mmol/L; magnesium 1.01±0.09mmol/L; sodium 152.04±3.65mmol/L; potassium 4.7±0.4mmol/L; ionized calcium 1.32±0.07mmol/L; total thyroxine 111.75±42.29nmol/L; total triiodothyronine 1.01±0.28nmol/L; free T4 11.93±1.78pmol/L; free T3 4.22±1.33pmol/L; and thyroid-stimulating hormone 0.18±0.19μIU/mL. Determination of Force Corresponding to Maximal Lactate Steady State in Tethered Swimming
The main aim of the present investigation was to verify if the aerobic capacity (AC) measured in tethered swimming corresponds to the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) and its correlation with 30 min and 400m free style swimming. Twenty-five swimmers were submitted to an incremental tethered swimming test (ITS) with an initial load of 20N and increments of 10N each 3min. After each stage of 3min, the athletes had 30s of interval to blood sample collections that were used to measure blood lactate concentrations ([La-]). The ACBI was determined by the abrupt increase in [La-] versus force (F). The points obtained between [La-] versus force (N) were adjusted by an exponential curve model to determine AC corresponding to 3.5mmol.l-1 (AC3.5) and 4.0mmol.l-1 (AC4.0). After these procedures, the swimmers performed maximal efforts of 30min and 400m in free style swimming. We used the distance performed in 30min and the time performed in 400m to calculate the median velocities (i.e. V30 and V400) of these protocols. After one week, in order to measure the MLSS, nine athletes performed three 30-min tethered swimming efforts with intensities of 90, 100, and 110% of ACBI. The ANOVA one-way was used to compare the ACBI, AC3.5 and AC4.0. Correlations between ACs, and between ACs and V30 and V400 (p\u3c0.05) were determined using the Pearson’s correlation coefficient. The intensity corresponding to 100% of ACBI was similar to the MLSS. It was observed significant correlations of the aerobic capacities (i.e. ACBI, AC3.5 and AC4.0) with V30 (r\u3e0.91) and V400 (r\u3e0.63). According to our results, it is possible to conclude that the ACBI corresponds to the MLSS, and both the AC - individually determined - and the AC - determined using fixed blood lactate concentrations of 3.5 and 4.0mmol.l-1 - can be used to predict the mean velocity of 30min and 400m in free style swimming. In addition to that, the tethered swimming system can be used for aerobic development in places where official sized swimming pools are not available, such as rehabilitation clinics and health clubs

Prediction of apparent digestibility of hays from natural pastures of the Northeast region of Portugal
In the Northeast region of Portugal hays from natural pastures are traditionally used as the main feed during the period of drought and the evaluation of its nutritive value is essential. The aim of this study was to predict the apparent organic matter digestibility (OMD) of 21 hays from natural pastures based on chemical composition, pepsin-cellulase solubility of organic matter (OMS) and in vitro organic matter digestibility.
Chemical composition of hays showed a wide range of values and acid detergent lignin (ADL) was the component that presented the highest variation (CV = 18.4%). The OMD varied between 516 and 658 g/kg OM. The best single OMD predictor was OMS (RSD = 2.8%, R2 = 0.52, P<0.001). Using multiple regression to predict OMD, the variables included in the model were OMS and ADL (OMD = 21.51 + 0.94 OMS – 0.83 ADL; RSD = 2.75%; R2 = 0.54; P<0.0001). According to principal component analysis (PCA) hays were divided in 3 groups and the multiple regression established for the larger group of hays (n=10) was: OMD = 4.13 + 0.85 OMS – 1.03 ADL; RSD = 2.13%, R2 = 0.77, P<0.0001.
The OMS method was superior to chemical composition and to the in vitro rumen fluid method in predicting OMD of hays from natural pastures. Results from PCA suggested that it may be useful to group these hays according to its chemical composition to accurately predict OMD
The role of structural evolution on the quantum conductance behavior of gold nanowires during stretching
Gold nanowires generated by mechanical stretching have been shown to adopt
only three kinds of configurations where their atomic arrangements adjust such
that either the [100], [111] or [110] zone axes lie parallel to the elongation
direction. We have analyzed the relationship between structural rearrangements
and electronic transport behavior during the elongation of Au nanowires for
each of the three possibilities. We have used two independent experiments to
tackle this problem, high resolution transmission high resolution electron
microscopy to observe the atomic structure and a mechanically controlled break
junction to measure the transport properties. We have estimated the conductance
of nanowires using a theoretical method based on the extended H\"uckel theory
that takes into account the atom species and their positions. Aided by these
calculations, we have consistently connected both sets of experimental results
and modeled the evolution process of gold nanowires whose conductance lies
within the first and third conductance quanta. We have also presented evidence
that carbon acts as a contaminant, lowering the conductance of one-atom-thick

Designing surgical clothing and drapes according to the new technical standards
Hospitals will continue to be the largest consumers of disposables, because of the diverse range of procedures they provide. Favourable growth is forecast for nonwovens. Increasing concern over contamination and nosocomial infections will boost the demand for consumables and disposables surgical gowns and drapes. But, until now neither the manufacturers nor the end users of surgical gowns and drapes could agree on standards.
So, a mandatory European standard is being developed to establish basic requirements and test methods for disposable and reusable materials used for surgical gowns and drapes. Once this standard has been adopted, the continued use of cotton textiles and conventional cotton-polyester mixed textiles will become questionable.(undefined
Towards unified understanding of conductance of stretched monatomic contacts
When monatomic contacts are stretched, their conductance behaves in
qualitatively different ways depending on their constituent atomic elements.
Under a single assumption of resonance formation, we show that various
conductance behavior can be understood in a unified way in terms of the
response of the resonance to stretching. This analysis clarifies the crucial
roles played by the number of valence electrons, charge neutrality, and orbital
