Objective: to analyze if the spatial distribution and the relationship of the main cooking oil waste collecting and processing companies in the Macrometropolis of Sao Paulo (MSP) support the characterization of their agglomeration as clusters or local productive arrangements (LPAs).Methodology: the research is of a qualitative nature with an exploratory approach based on multiple case studies involving three companies from a current universe of fifteen associated to The Brazilian Association for Awareness, Collection and Recycling of Edible Oil (ECOLEO) that congregates the most important companies active in this segment in MSP. It was based on bibliographical research, documentary survey and interviews followed by triangulation of information.Originality/Relevance: the analysis of the companies from the perspective of a cluster or a local productive arrangement allowed to verify how they are organized spatially in the MSP, as well as the relationship among them, aiming at suggesting governmental support for the optimization of its activities and the increase of income generation. Results: the research showed that the elements of the agglomeration´s economy identified were not sufficient to say that the segment could be characterized as either a cluster or a local productive arrangement. It was concluded that the companies studied have little interaction with each other, each forming an isolated network of cooperation with a number of small oil waste suppliers which gravitates around them.Theoretical Contributions: the contributions of the study highlights the identification of existing cooperation networks in the used cooking oil recycling segment and how its actors are organized and acting in MSP. It is also worth mentioning the expansion of the national literature on this theme that is an emerging one at the global level. Clusters. Aglomerações. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to assess how technology transfer offices (TTOs) of a publicuniversity of the state of São Paulo use patent valuation methods in the process of using developedtechnology value and transferring technology to industry.Design/methodology/approach – This study is an exploratory qualitative investigation based on acase study conducted in a public university in the state of São Paulo. The university has a TTO and aninternal structure for technology transfer. In-depth interviews were conducted with the TTO manager aboutpatent valuation and the answers given were analysed.Findings – The results on how TTOs use patent valuation methods in the process of assigning value totechnology indicate which factors facilitate and which factors hinder the valuation of patents in technologiesdeveloped at universities.Research limitations/implications – The possible lack of data disclosure due to confidentialityregarding royalties and trading fees makes further comparisons between Brazilian public universitiesdifficult. Therefore, this study recommends that further studies on patent valuation and technologytransfer process at private universities, research institutes and public and private companies should beperformed.Practical implications – In the practice, this study contributes to companies and TTOs by increasingtheir synergies in licensing negotiations, as well as by reducing the gap of information, between the businessparties for assignment and transfer of technologies. With regard to theoretical contribution, this study can citeadvances in the methods to measure the financial benefits arising from the valuation of technologiesembedded in the patents.Originality/value – Owing to the lack of research on the methods of valuation used by TTOs ofBrazilian universities, the present study can be useful in serving as a theoretical source for future research and in supporting future TTO negotiations in the process of transferring technologies toproductive industry

Towards Sustainability Through Incremental Innovation of a Low Cost Product: The Nespresso Case

With the increase of the population, it is imperative to expand the production of goods and services to meet the needs of individuals. Aggressive production practices are destroying and diminishing the world’s natural resources, without any consideration about its consequences and impact on future generations. In order to minimize this problem, organizations need to develop innovations, which focus on and address the economic, social and environmental dimensions, or Triple Bottom Line. This article presents a case study on Nespresso, and investigates their strategy of developing an innovative recyclable aluminum coffee capsule, and a closed-loop recycling process, with the purpose of meeting the Triple Bottom Line. Data collection was done through secondary data, video testimonies and public documents. The collected data was analyzed and validated using the Theoretical Framework of Sustainability. With the understanding of this case, it was sought to answer the following research question: How can a low-cost incremental innovation contribute to sustainability in a gourmet coffee company? The main finding is that a low-cost product with incremental innovation, designed to meet the purpose of the Triple Bottom Line and coupled with a value-sharing strategy, is capable of delivering economic, social, and environmental benefits.

PROPOSAL OF A THEORETICAL MODEL FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION AND SCALABILITY OF SCIENCE PARKS: A CASE STUDY

The general aim was to propose a theoretical model for the implementation and scalability of science parks. For this purpose, an in-depth study was conducted at the Santos Science Park (SSP), as this is the only implementation and scalability program for science parks in the country whose central focus is on energy (oil and natural gas). The study was qualitative and exploratory in nature and the methodology used was the case study, with data collected from multiple sources. These sources included bibliographic research, document analysis, a workshop and meetings with members of the Board of Directors of the SSP. Information on other consolidated science parks in the country (Tecnopuc in Porto Alegre and Porto Digital in Recife), which was important to the structuring of the theoretical model for the implementation and scalability of the SSP, was obtained from semi-structured interviews with their managers. The results showed that the implementation of the SSP will require not only a legal format and an adequate real estate project, but will also involve the articulation of political, economic and social activities that precede the implementation of the venture. These activities will define the criteria for the concession and use of the park’s infrastructure and services. They also include the mechanisms for economic and financial support and social rules that will affect the interface of the park with its resident and non-resident companies and society. The conclusions of the study led to the proposal of a theoretical model for the implementation and scalability of a science park through the development of dynamic, ambidextrous and relational capabilities that together result in a scalable innovation cycle
