Microwave plasma chemical vapour deposition diamond nucleation on ferrous substrates with Ti and Cr interlayers
Diamond-coated steel is considered an important issue in synthetic diamond technology due to the great economical importance of enhancing the wear resistance and surface hardness of commercial Fe-based alloys. However, direct diamond coating by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) is rather problematic-adhesion and growth are seriously affected. The use of interlayers is a common approach to minimise these problems. This work reports an investigation on the establishment of good nucleation and growth conditions of diamond films by microwave plasma CVD (MPCVD) on ferrous substrates coated with Ti and Cr interlayers. Commercial grade ferrous substrates were pre-coated with commercial interlayers by sputtering (Ti, Cr) and electroplating (Cr) techniques. Steel substrates led to better results than iron cast substrates. The best films were obtained on Ti pre-coated steel substrate. The results on Cr interlayers pointed to the advantage of electroplating over the physical vapour deposition (PVD) sputtering. From the two selected parameter sets for diamond deposition, the one using lower power level conducted to the best results. Initial roughness and growth parameters were found to counteract on the uniformity of the diamond films. The morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the roughness was estimated by profilometry, while diamond quality and stress state were evaluated by mu-Raman spectroscopy. Image analysis technique as a tool to identify morphological changes in Trametes versicolor pellets according to exopolysaccharide or laccase production
Image analysis technique was applied to identify morphological changes of pellets from white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor on agitated submerged cultures during the production of exopolysaccharide (EPS) or ligninolytic enzymes. Batch tests with four different experimental conditions were carried out. Two different culture media were used, namely yeast medium or Trametes defined medium and the addition of lignolytic inducers as xylidine or pulp and paper industrial effluent were evaluated. Laccase activity, EPS production, and final biomass contents were determined for batch assays and the pellets morphology was assessed by image analysis techniques. The obtained data allowed establishing the choice of the metabolic pathways according to the experimental conditions, either for laccase enzymatic production in the Trametes defined medium, or for EPS production in the rich Yeast Medium experiments. Furthermore, the image processing and analysis methodology allowed for a better comprehension of the physiological phenomena with respect to the corresponding pellets morphological stages. The authors acknowledge Portucel-Empresa de Celulose e Papel, Cacia, Portugal, SA for the pulp and paper Kraft effluent used in this work. Participatory planning and quality assessment: contributions of a nursing management technology
Objective: to analyze the outcomes of participatory planning and quality assessment of the nursing care provided in a hospital
ward using a nursing management technology. Method: Convergent care research focuses on research and practice intervention,
developed in a hospital in southern Brazil from April to August 2016. Participatory planning and quality evaluation was performed
using the PRAXIS® technology. Results: In the participatory planning, a survey of needs/problems was carried out by 33
professionals followed by 5 workshops, where mission, guiding principles, 4 priority problems, expected results, objectives and
plans of activities were defined. For quality evaluation, two indicators were used: satisfaction and notification of adverse events.
The evaluation was carried out with 101 patients and /or relatives, predominating “great or good”. Adverse events, 28 records,
predominating medication errors. Conclusion: Participatory planning and quality assessment are essential to improve nursing
care management and the PRAXIS® technological innovation has been a useful resource.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Potorous CPD Photolyase Rescues a Cryptochrome-Deficient Mammalian Circadian Clock
Despite the sequence and structural conservation between cryptochromes and photolyases, members of the cryptochrome/photolyase (flavo)protein family, their functions are divergent. Whereas photolyases are DNA repair enzymes that use visible light to lesion-specifically remove UV-induced DNA damage, cryptochromes act as photoreceptors and circadian clock proteins. To address the functional diversity of cryptochromes and photolyases, we investigated the effect of ectopically expressed Arabidopsis thaliana (6-4)PP photolyase and Potorous tridactylus CPD-photolyase (close and distant relatives of mammalian cryptochromes, respectively), on the performance of the mammalian cryptochromes in the mammalian circadian clock. Using photolyase transgenic mice, we show that Potorous CPD-photolyase affects the clock by shortening the period of behavioral rhythms. Furthermore, constitutively expressed CPD-photolyase is shown to reduce the amplitude of circadian oscillations in cultured cells and to inhibit CLOCK/BMAL1 driven transcription by interacting with CLOCK. Importantly, we show that Potorous CPD-photolyase can restore the molecular oscillator in the liver of (clock-deficient) Cry1/Cry2 double knockout mice. These data demonstrate that a photolyase can act as a true cryptochrome. These findings shed new light on the importance of the core structure of mammalian cryptochromes in relation to its function in the circadian clock and contribute to our further understanding of the evolution of the cryptochrome/photolyase protein family
