    Topological restrictions in Lorentzian geometry: a survey

    It is well know that globally hyperbolic solutions (M,g) of the Einstein field equations in general relativity may have initial data Cauchy hypersurfaces with any topology. However, some restrictions on the fundamental group of M can arise from the causal structure if either all inextendible causal geodesics in (M,g) are complete or if one assumes that M has a boundary with suitable properties.     Early Cognitive/Social Deficits and Late Motor Phenotype in Conditional Wild-Type TDP-43 Transgenic Mice

    Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are two neurodegenerative diseases associated to mislocalization and aggregation of TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43). To investigate in depth the behavioral phenotype associated with this proteinopathy, we used as a model transgenic (Tg) mice conditionally overexpressing human wild-type TDP 43 protein (hTDP-43-WT) in forebrain neurons. We previously characterized these mice at the neuropathological level and found progressive neurodegeneration and other features that evoke human TDP-43 proteinopathies of the FTD/ALS spectrum. In the present study we analyzed the behavior of mice at multiple domains, including motor, social and cognitive performance. Our results indicate that young hTDP-43-WT Tg mice (1 month after post-weaning transgene induction) present a normal motor phenotype compared to control littermates, as assessed by accelerated rotarod performance, spontaneous locomotor activity in the open field test and a mild degree of spasticity shown by a clasping phenotype. Analysis of social and cognitive behavior showed a rapid installment of deficits in social interaction, working memory (Y-maze test) and recognition memory (novel object recognition test) in the absence of overt motor abnormalities. To investigate if the motor phenotype worsen with age, we analyzed the behavior of mice after long-term (up to 12 months) transgene induction. Our results reveal a decreased performance on the rotarod test and in the hanging wire test, indicating a motor phenotype that was absent in younger mice. In addition, long-term hTDP-43-WT expression led to hyperlocomotion in the open field test. In sum, these results demonstrate a time-dependent emergence of a motor phenotype in older hTDP-43-WT Tg mice, recapitulating aspects of clinical FTD presentations with motor involvement in human patients, and providing a complementary animal model for studying TDP-43 proteinopathies.Fil: Alfieri, Julio Armando.     Lattices of Generalized Skyrmions

    Generalized Skyrme systems are those which include both the Skyrme and the Skyrme-Faddeev models through an interpolating parameter \alpha \in [0,1] the former corresponds to \alpha=0 and the latter to \alpha=1. Our numerical and analytical investigations centre around the \alpha=0 Skyrme crystal, its deformations, and its behaviour and symmetries as a function of \alpha, called the generalized Skyrme crystal. We show that a double square lattice emerges when the Skyrme crystal is deformed in a certain limit; we compare its energy with the one corresponding to a double hexagonal lattice and show that it has a lower energy-per-charge than its hexagonal counterpart. On the other hand, vortex-like structures with two 1-vortices (vortices of order 1) and two 1-antivortices, denoted V+AV+V+AV, appear when the Skyrme crystal is deformed in a different limit, as well as when the generalized Skyrme crystal is taken close to the Skyrme-Faddeev limit. This leads us to the study of generalized V+AV and V+AV+V+AV configurations, as a function of \alpha. We show that when these configurations are stacked in the axial direction, they exhibit some winding and linking properties as they are taken close to the Skyrme-Faddeev limit, where the V+AV+V+AV configurations appear to be more stable than their V+AV counterparts. Finally, the study of such configurations led to the discovery of two crystalline solutions whose properties are investigated in some detail: a 2-vortex/2-antivortex pair, denoted 2V+2AV, and a “multi-sheet” solution, both of which have a lower energy-per-charge than the V+AV+V+AV solution, in the Skyrme-Faddeev limit

    This paper aims to show the similarities between two novels,Ulysses, by the Irish writer James Joyce, and Grande Sertão: Veredas, by the Brazilian author João Guimarães Rosa. A large number of comparisons have been made between these two novels in the field of literature. They have many things in common, mainly the use of language. It is creation; and, even more, it is poetry, a magic path leading one author to the other, a novel about the other novel; and yet more: the language is the magic magnifying glass that brings readers and authors closer to the solitary journey of the characters. It is in the poetry and expression of these narratives that the readers discover the “spirit” of creation

    Mathematical modeling of Zika disease in pregnant women and newborns with microcephaly in Brazil

    We propose a new mathematical model for the spread of Zika virus. Special attention is paid to the transmission of microcephaly.
