    Botulinum toxin type A combined with neurodynamic mobilization for upper limb spasticity after stroke: a case report

    Objective: The purpose of this study is to report a case in which combinatory therapy of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) and neurodynamic mobilization (NM) was used as treatment for a patient with severe upper limb spasticity and pain after stroke. Clinical Features: A 76-year-old male patient had spastic muscles in the upper limb 10 months after an ischemic stroke. Intervention and Outcome: The patient underwent combined treatment with BoNT-A and NM of the upper limb in 6 monthly applications. Evaluation was performed pretreatment, 3 months after the first injection, 3 months after the second injection, and at a follow-up session 9 months after starting the treatment. The following outcomes were measured: pain by using a numeric rating scale, spasticity by the Modified Ashworth Scale for Grading Spasticity, acceptance and emotional reaction to the treatment by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and functionality by ranges of motion. The patient improved in all outcomes after treatment, and results were maintained during the follow-up sessions. Conclusion: The combined NM and BoNT-A treatment appeared to decrease pain and improve joint ranges of motion during treatment for this patient.     Motivation in mechanics of materials classes: An experimental approachThis work presents a novel didactic methodology for the approximation of the students to the subject of Mechanics of Materials, with the aim of improving the understanding of the inertia moment, and its relevance on the mechanical behaviour of structures. The students have grouped on groups of two to three persons. The work consisted in designing the most efficient beam having in mind several design constraints. Tensile tests were performed to determine the relevant material properties. Those were used for the analytic dimensioning of the beams. The aim of the work is to obtain the highest efficiency possible, since it results in the best mark, as possible. The efficiency was measured by the maximum load on experimental bending testing, divided by the mass of the beam. The results, as well as the interest of the methodology are discussed. It is proved that this methodology can be useful for the students to apply theoretical concepts and, at the same time, to give a deeper understanding of real experimental tests.(undefined)info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Surface rehabilitation of Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements using single or double surface dressings with soft bitumen, conventional or modified emulsions

    Surface dressings are a sustainable maintenance alternative for pavements with surface distresses, due to the low amount of resources involved. This paper aims to analyze the viability of using twelve different surface dressing solutions, including three binders (conventional and modified emulsions, and a soft 160/220 bitumen) and a covering with diluted emulsion, for surface treatment of Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements. Several test methods were used to evaluate the macrotexture, skid resistance, adhesion, and resistance to wearing on a large scale prototype. In general, single surface dressings increased further the macrotexture of the concrete pavement surface. The skid resistance of single and double surface dressings was similar. The best surface dressing in the pull-off test was that with the 160/220 bitumen. The conventional and modified emulsions presented similar mechanical adhesion in the Vialit plate test. Concerning the prototype wearing test, the best result was obtained for the double surface dressing with bitumen covered with diluted emulsion.     Recycled asphalt mixtures produced with high percentage of different waste materials

    The use of sustainable solutions in construction is not just an option, but is increasingly becoming a need of the Society. Thus, nowadays the recycling of waste materials is a growing technology that needs to be continuously improved, namely by researching new solutions for waste valorisation and by increasing the amount of wastes reused. In the paving industry, the reuse of reclaimed asphalt (RA) is becoming common practice, but needs further research work. Thus, this study aims to increase the incorporation of RA and other waste materials in the production of recycled asphalt mixtures in order to improve their mechanical, environmental and economic performance. Recycled mixtures with 50% RA were analysed in this study, including: i) RA selection, preparation and characterization; ii) incorporation of other waste materials as binder additives or modifiers, like used motor oil (UMO) and waste high density polyethylene (HDPE); iii) production of different mixtures (without additives; with UMO; with UMO and HDPE) and comparison of their performance in order to assess the main advantages of each solution. With this study it was concluded that up to 7.5 % of UMO and 4.0 % of HDPE can be used in a new modified binder for asphalt mixtures with 50 % of RA, which have excellent properties concerning the rutting with WTS = 0.02 mm/103 cycles, the fatigue resistance with ε6 = 160.4, and water sensitivity with an ITSR of 81.9 %.The authors would like to acknowledge the financial and material support given by some institutions.     Seismic ground motion scenarios in Lower Tagus Valley Basin

    Throughout its history the Lower Tagus Valley (LTV) has been struck by several earthquakes which produced important material damage and loss of lives: The 1st of November 1755 Lisbon earthquake and the 1969 earthquake (Mw=7.3), located in the SW Iberia Margin and the 1344, 1531 and 1909 (M= 6 to 7) with epicenter located inside the LTV basin. Since this region is the most highly populated region in Portugal, it is expected that an earthquake of similar magnitude of those that have occurred in the past will cause an enormous destruction and casualties. This fact makes LTV a high priority area for earthquake research in Portugal. In order to overcome the problems related to the absence of geological outcrops, low slip-rates (<0,4 mm/year) and the processes of sedimentation and erosion, we use in this work seismic reflection profiles, potential field data, soundings, wells and geological cartography to obtain a map of the main seismogenic structures and to characterize their seismic potential [1]. Moreover, a 3D structural model has been developed for de LTV based on Seismic reflection, Seismic Noise and potential field data [2,3]. In order to improve assessment of the seismic hazard in the LTV basin, we simulate long-period (0-1 Hz) ground motion time histories for a suite of scenarios earthquakes (Mw =5.5 to 7) within the basin, using fault geometries and the 3D seismic velocity structure based on the previous mentioned works.     Innovative low noise surfaces : comparison of damping and absorption

    While sound absorption is an acoustic related property reasonably well known and currently used to characterize low noise surfaces, damping is a property commonly used in other domains to define the energy dissipation of a material but rarely used to characterize this important mechanism in road pavements. This paper compares noise related properties such as damping and absorption of five road pavement surfaces. Two of which are innovative and therefore expected to be low noise since they have high voids content, incorporate fine grading aggregates and expanded clay. Other two incorporate rubber and waste high-density polyethylene giving them an elastic and stiff behaviour respectively. The fifth is a conventional material, asphalt concrete, used for control. Sound absorption tests and mechanical impedance tests were carried out in 30x30 cm slabs at 20ºC. To measure absorption, an impedance tube with an open end was put on the surfaces. To determine damping, the response of a hammer impact measured by an accelerometer on suspended slabs was analysed. Results show that the innovative surfaces have better acoustic related properties while the surface with high-density polyethylene provided the worst results.     Can oil, plastic and RAP wastes have a new life in novel asphalt mixtures?

    The pavement recycling allows to reuse reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) or other waste materials in new asphalt mixtures for road construction or rehabilitation, thus re-ducing the use of virgin materials (aggregates and bitumen). Thus, the main aim of this study is to minimize the use of natural resources through the reuse of three waste materials: HDPE, mo-tor oil and RAP. Different amounts of waste motor oil and HDPE were added to an asphalt binder with 50% aged bitumen. The best solutions to produce the modified binders (4.5 to 5.0% HDPE and 10 % waste motor oil) performed as well as a conventional bitumen although they only used 35 % of virgin bitumen. Asphalt mixtures with 50 % RAP were produced with the selected modified binders, improving some characteristics in comparison with conventional asphalt mixtures.     Use of data mining techniques to explain the primary factors influencing water sensitivity of asphalt mixtures

    The water sensitivity of asphalt mixtures affects the durability of the pavements, and it depends on several parameters related to its composition (aggregates and binder) and the production and application processes. One of the main parameters used in the European Standards to measure the water sensitivity of asphalt mixtures is the indirect tensile strength ratio (ITSR). Therefore, this work aims to obtain a predictive model of ITSR of asphalt mixtures using several parameters that affect water sensitivity and assess their relative importance. The database used to develop the model comprises thirteen parameters collected from one hundred sixty different asphalt mixtures. Data Mining techniques were applied to process the data using Multiple Regression, Artificial Neural Networks, and Support Vector Machines (SVM). The different metrics analysed showed that SVM is the best predictive model of the ITSR (mean absolute deviation of 0.116, root mean square error of 0.150 and Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.667). The application of a sensitivity analysis indicates that the binder content is the parameter that most influences the water sensitivity of asphalt mixtures (26%). However, this property depends simultaneously on other factors such as the characteristics of the coarse and fine aggregates (24.9%), asphalt binder characteristics (19.3%) and the use of additives (10%).Acknowledgements This work was partly financed by FCT/MCTES through national funds (PIDDAC) under the R & D Unit Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE) , under reference UIDB/04029/2020

    Este artigo aborda a temática da reabilitação da rede rodoviária no contexto dos seus desafios para o futuro próximo. Inicialmente é feita uma abordagem da prática corrente dos processos seguidos na reabilitação e do seu impacto nos custos do ciclo de vida dos pavimentos. A seguir apresenta-se uma visão global da contribuição da reabilitação para a qualidade de vida. Por fim aborda-se o papel da inovação na engenharia rodoviária ao serviço da sociedade, compreendendo a inovação ao nível da qualidade de circulação e a construção e conservação sustentável dos pavimentos rodoviários
