    Thought-controlled games with brain-computer interfaces

    Nowadays, EEG based BCI systems are starting to gain ground in games for health research. With reduced costs and promising an innovative and exciting new interaction paradigm, attracted developers and researchers to use them on video games for serious applications. However, with researchers focusing mostly on the signal processing part, the interaction aspect of the BCIs has been neglected. A gap between classification performance and online control quality for BCI based systems has been created by this research disparity, resulting in suboptimal interactions that lead to user fatigue and loss of motivation over time. Motor-Imagery (MI) based BCIs interaction paradigms can provide an alternative way to overcome motor-related disabilities, and is being deployed in the health environment to promote the functional and structural plasticity of the brain. A BCI system in a neurorehabilitation environment, should not only have a high classification performance, but should also provoke a high level of engagement and sense of control to the user, for it to be advantageous. It should also maximize the level of control on user’s actions, while not requiring them to be subject to long training periods on each specific BCI system. This thesis has two main contributions, the Adaptive Performance Engine, a system we developed that can provide up to 20% improvement to user specific performance, and NeuRow, an immersive Virtual Reality environment for motor neurorehabilitation that consists of a closed neurofeedback interaction loop based on MI and multimodal feedback while using a state-of-the-art Head Mounted Display.Hoje em dia, os sistemas BCI baseados em EEG estão a começar a ganhar terreno em jogos relacionados com a saúde. Com custos reduzidos e prometendo um novo e inovador paradigma de interação, atraiu programadores e investigadores para usá-los em vídeo jogos para aplicações sérias. No entanto, com os investigadores focados principalmente na parte do processamento de sinal, o aspeto de interação dos BCI foi negligenciado. Um fosso entre o desempenho da classificação e a qualidade do controle on-line para sistemas baseados em BCI foi criado por esta disparidade de pesquisa, resultando em interações subótimas que levam à fadiga do usuário e à perda de motivação ao longo do tempo. Os paradigmas de interação BCI baseados em imagética motora (IM) podem fornecer uma maneira alternativa de superar incapacidades motoras, e estão sendo implementados no sector da saúde para promover plasticidade cerebral funcional e estrutural. Um sistema BCI usado num ambiente de neuro-reabilitação, para que seja vantajoso, não só deve ter um alto desempenho de classificação, mas também deve promover um elevado nível de envolvimento e sensação de controlo ao utilizador. Também deve maximizar o nível de controlo nas ações do utilizador, sem exigir que sejam submetidos a longos períodos de treino em cada sistema BCI específico. Esta tese tem duas contribuições principais, o Adaptive Performance Engine, um sistema que desenvolvemos e que pode fornecer até 20% de melhoria para o desempenho específico do usuário, e NeuRow, um ambiente imersivo de Realidade Virtual para neuro-reabilitação motora, que consiste num circuito fechado de interação de neuro-feedback baseado em IM e feedback multimodal e usando um Head Mounted Display de última geração

    Automatically Generating Websites from Hand-drawn Mockups

    Designers often use physical hand-drawn mockups to convey their ideas to stakeholders. Unfortunately, these sketches do not depict the exact final look and feel of web pages, and communication errors will often occur, resulting in prototypes that do not reflect the stakeholder's vision. Multiple suggestions exist to tackle this problem, mainly in the translation of visual mockups to prototypes. Some authors propose end-to-end solutions by directly generating the final code from a single (black-box) Deep Neural Network. Others propose the use of object detectors, providing more control over the acquired elements but missing out on the mockup's layout. Our approach provides a real-time solution that explores: (1) how to achieve a large variety of sketches that would look indistinguishable from something a human would draw, (2) a pipeline that clearly separates the different responsibilities of extracting and constructing the hierarchical structure of a web mockup, (3) a methodology to segment and extract containers from mockups, (4) the usage of in-sketch annotations to provide more flexibility and control over the generated artifacts, and (5) an assessment of the synthetic dataset impact in the ability to recognize diagrams actually drawn by humans. We start by presenting an algorithm that is capable of generating synthetic mockups. We trained our model (N=8400, Epochs=400) and subsequently fine-tuned it (N=74, Epochs=100) using real human-made diagrams. We accomplished a mAP of 95.37%, with 90% of the tests taking less than 430ms on modest commodity hardware (approximate to 2.3fps). We further provide an ablation study with well-known object detectors to evaluate the synthetic dataset in isolation, showing that the generator achieves a mAP score of 95%, approximate to 1.5 x higher than training using hand-drawn mockups alone

    E-goi is an organization which provides automated multichannel marketing possibilities. Given its system’s complexity, it requires a not so smooth learning curve, which means that sometimes costumers incur upon some difficulties which directs them towards appropriate Costumer Support resources. With an increase in the number of users, these Costumer Support requests are somewhat frequent and demand an increase in availability in Costumer Support channels which become inundated with simple, easily-resolvable requests. The organization idealized the possibility of automating significant portion of costumer generated tickets with the possibility of scaling to deal with other types of operations. This thesis aims to present a long-term solution to that request with the development of a chatbot system, fully integrated with the existing enterprise modules and data sources. In order to accomplish this, prototypes using several Chatbot management and Natural Language Processing frameworks were developed. Afterwards, their advantages and disadvantages were pondered, followed by the implementation of its accompanying system and testing of developed software and Natural Language Processing results. Although the developed overarching system achieved its designed functionalities, the master’s thesis could not offer a viable solution for the problem at hand given that the available data could not provide an intent mining model usable in a real-world context.A E-goi é uma organização que disponibiliza soluções de marketing digital automatizadas e multicanal. Dada a complexidade do seu Sistema, que requer uma curva de aprendizagem não muito suave, o que significa que os seus utilizadores por vezes têm dificuldades que os levam a recorrer aos canais de Apoio ao Cliente. Com um aumento de utilizadores, estes pedidos de Apoio ao Cliente tornam-se frequentes e requerem um aumento da disponibilidade nos canais apropriados que ficam inundados de pedidos simples e de fácil resolução. A organização idealizou a possibilidade de automatizar uma porção significativa de tais pedidos, podendo escalar para outro tipo de operações. Este trabalho de mestrado visa apresentar uma proposta de solução a longo prazo para este problema. Pretende-se o desenvolvimento de um sistema de chatbots, completamente integrado com o sistema existente da empresa e variadas fontes de dados. Para este efeito, foram desenvolvidos protótipos de várias frameworks para gestão de chatbots e de Natural Language Processing, ponderadas as suas vantagens e desvantagens, implementado o sistema englobante e realizados planos de testes ao software desenvolvido e aos resultados de Natural Language Processing. Apesar do sistema desenvolvido ter cumprido as funcionalidades pelas quais foi concebido, a tese de mestrado não foi capaz de obter uma solução viável para o problema dado que com os dados disponibilizados não foi possível produzir um modelo de deteção de intenções usável num contexto real

    Information systems for industrial processes support and optimization

    This paper presents the Document Management Systems (DMS) as a support decision tool to optimize Toyota Caetano Portugal S.A. (TCAP) processes performance. The created systems were developed on the best practices of a Business Project Management (BPM), for better structural implementation. The first system implementation was related to the warehouse materials requirement process, where an excel template with VBA functions for fill automatization was built. It had a reduction of the overall paper consumption and time execution optimization, which means the gain of approximately of 0,10€ and 2,09€ per unit produced, respectively. It was also obtained an elimination of 4538 paper sheets per year. A second system was also developed, in order to provide a Decision Support System (DSS) for documental management. Several User Forms were developed in VBA code in order to provide a flexible and intuitively user interface experience. It reduced the users time decision making and the administrator maintenance, by a total of 26 minutes, corresponding to a 1,61€ reduction per unit built, which means an efficiency increase of 42%.     Cold War rivalry on Brazil’s and Argentina’s nuclear programs: examining military and civilian intentions

    This article seeks to verify whether the development of the nuclear programs in Brazil and Argentina was influenced by the rise of military regimes in both countries, especially by the context of the Cold War. To this end, this research has a qualitative nature, which takes as its method the bibliographic review of articles, books, theses, and dissertations, to analyse the nuclear programs of both countries and the impacts of the Cold War upon them. It was found that while in the literature on the History of International Relations it is commonly reported that during the Cold War, regions peripheric to the poles of power, such as Latin America, were completely subject  to the pressures of the United States and the Soviet Union, it is proposed that at least regarding nuclearization, there were disputes between the main regional powers (Brazil and Argentina) with the United States about policies to be implemented as well as the diversification of partnerships in pursuit of technological transfer. In addition, it was noticed that the mutual distrust between Brazil and Argentina regarding the degree of development and real intentions underscoring their respective nuclear programs brought about a Cold War like dynamics in the Southern Cone.The objective of this article is to investigate whether Cold War rivalry influenced the development of nuclear programs in Brazil and Argentina. The research employs a qualitative approach and bibliographic analysis of primary sources, including articles, books, and other relevant sources. The main hypothesis is to examine whether the culture of Cold War rivalry stimulated the development of nuclear programs in these countries, analysing the military and civilian intentions behind their nuclear technologies. While it is commonly reported that Latin America was under the influence of the United States (US) and the Soviet Union (USSR) during the Cold War, the cases of Brazil and Argentina show the opposite. Both countries adopted independent nuclear policies, seeking technological transfer through diversified and autonomous partnerships. Additionally, these divergent positions included arguments and actions regarding their respective nuclear policies. However, mutual distrust between Brazil and Argentina regarding the advancement and sophistication of their nuclear programs generated a dynamic similar to the Cold War in the Southern Cone region. This dynamic originated internally based on the logic of the two countries, despite the later creation of joint non-proliferation mechanisms
