The goal of this paper is to compare the European Union member states regarding the flexibility of their labour markets and an essay to explain the meaning of the level of this flexibility in formation of changes that the labour market undergoes. In the article an analysis and evaluation of the flexibility level of the labour markets in the EU member states, utilising the indexes of the Employment Protection Legislation (EPL), sub-indexes of the economic freedom that concern the employees rights (labour freedom) and indexes of fiscal charge. Subsequently the shaping of the GDP growth speed, unemployment rate and work efficiency in 2008-2011 (quarterly) was presented. Also the evaluation of the mutual relations between these variables was made. An article ends with proper conclusions

Total anomalous pulmonary vein drainage in a 60-year-old woman diagnosed in an ECG-gated multidetector computed tomography : a case report and review of literature

Purpose: Total anomalous pulmonary vein drainage (TAPVD) is a congenital cardiac defect in which there is no connection between pulmonary veins and the left atrium. Pulmonary veins form a confluence independent of the left atrium and drain to a systemic vein. TAPVD types are: supracardiac, cardiac, infracardiac, and mixed. TAPVD accounts for approximately 1.5-2.2% of all congenital heart diseases. This anomaly is usually diagnosed in the neonatal period, and it coexists with atrial septal defect. Adult cases of TAPVD are rarely reported. Case report: We report a rare case of a 60-year-old woman with incidentally found, uncorrected TAPVD in ECG-gated multidetector computed tomography. In previous echocardiographic examinations partial anomalous pulmonary venous return and atrial septal defect were diagnosed. Conclusions: ECG-gated multidetector computed tomography is a valuable diagnostic method for adults with congenital heart disease. It enables evaluation of coronary arteries and simultaneously provides detailed anatomy of great vessels

Epicardial adipose tissue and right ventricular dysfunction in patients with acute pulmonary embolism

Epicardial adipose tissue has been linked with increased cardiovascular morbidity. Its correlation with right ventriclar morphology and physiology is a recent concept. The aim of the study was to analyze severity of right ventricular dysfunction in the course of acute pulmonary embolism with the amount of epicardial adipose tissue. Retrospective analsis of 192 computed tomography studies with confirmed pulmonary embolism was performed. Patients were divided into two groups with low and high amount of epicardial adipose tissue. Although no significant differences of BMI and severity of pulmonary embolism were observed between the groups, in patients with high amount of epicardial fat, right ventricular dysfunction was significantly more severe

The role of the European Union’s funds in combating unemployment in the Radom district

The aim of this paper is to identify the role of the European Union’s funds in combating unemployment in the Radom district. An active policy on the labour market includes different actions that aim to ameliorate the situation on the labour market. It concerns, amongst others, the programmes that contribute to diminishing the unemployment. In the paper the efficiency of the programmes that focus on combating unemployment in the Radom district between 2005 and 2009 was evaluated. The programmes taken into consideration were financed from both domestic and European Union’s resources. The reemployment rate was utilised. Out of the data analysis it can be derived that the efficiency of these programmes varies to a large extent. This is caused by the legal and administrative conditions as well as from the situation on the local labour market

Primary spleen lymphoma visualized with contrast enhanced ultrasound - case report

Introduction. The case is reported of an extremely rare primary splenic lymphoma (PSL) and summarizes the basic concepts and techniques of contrast enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS), focusing on splenic applications for the diagnosis of malignant splenic lesions. Case report. A 52-year-old male with no co-morbidities presented with a history of left upper abdominal pain for one month, and chronic fatigue. Abdominal ultrasound was performed in which suspicious focal lesions in the enlarged spleen was detected, and assessed with contrast enhanced ultrasound, followed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The diagnosis of malignant splenic tumour was made based on history, clinical examinations and radiographic appearance in CEUS and MRI. Conclusion. In the presented case contrast enhanced ultrasound allowed establishing the diagnosis of malignancy within the spleen, which was later confirmed with MRI and histopathological examination

Wear Resistance of the Glass-Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite with the Addition of Quartz Filler

    No full text
The paper presents the results of investigations on the glass fiber reinforced composite for the floor panels with quartz powder additions of different percentages in terms of wear resistance, friction coefficient, hardness, and strength. The wear resistance was assessed using the specific wear work parameter determined by the novel tribotester with friction band. It was found that an increase in quartz powder addition to the tested polymer composite does not enhance its mechanical increasingly properties. From the wear tests it can be concluded that only the composite with four layers of glass fibers and 6 wt.% of the quartz powder exhibited improvement of the wear resistance, but its shear strength was lower than that of the two layer specimens with similar powder proportions. On the other hand, the highest friction coefficient’s, which is microhardness HV05, shear strength and impact strength were attained for the composite with two layers of glass fibers and 3 wt.% of the quartz powder. Among four layer samples, very close results were obtained for the samples with 10% of powder and insignificantly lower strength were observed for the samples with no powder added. The results revealed that there is no clear trend for the effect of silica filler percentage on the composite performance, which indicates the need for individual purpose-dependent decision making in the design of the glass fiber reinforced composites with quartz powder filler

Krakowskie Studia Międzynarodowe 2019, nr 3 (XVI) The Presidency of Donald Trump

From introduction: "Donald Trump’s victory in 2016 shattered a complacency of the global liberal consensus, already shaking in Europe in the wake of the immigration crisis in 2015 and its political consequences. His victory was quickly defi ned by the liberal-left elites, because of the United States superpower status among modern democracies, as the most consequential and disruptive populist phenomenon among other already visible in Europe, subverting not only the post-Soviet liberal consensus of the “end of history” shaped after 1989, but more generally questioning the principles of the post-1945 model of social and political development of liberal democracy. We may also risk an opinion that Trump’s victory, together with other victories of the so called “populist movements” in such countries as Great Britain, Hungary, Poland or Italy with a corresponding breaking of the consensual politics in many European countries, including the most, so it seemed, stable Germany, are truly important milestones in western political history for reasons not necessarily connected with the immediate changes in so far unquestionable concrete liberal policies taken for granted. They are also important because they suddenly deepened political divisions and stirred passions inside of particular societies leveling them to a nearly quasi-religious dimension."(...

Disease severity and mean platelet volume in elderly patients with pulmonary embolism

    Get PDF
Elderly patients are at higher risk of venous thromboembolism, including pulmonary embolism. Furhtermore, clinical course is frequently more servere. Platelet parameters are of increasing interest in thrombosis research, including mean platelet volume, which is a recognized indicator of increased thrombotic activity. The aim of the study was to compare severity of pulmonary embolism as measured by computed tomography, as well as mean platelet volume in younger and elderly patients. Retrospective analysis of 150 patients data was performed. Both younger and older patients presented with similar pulmonary embolism severity, time since onset of symptoms, as well as d-dimer levels. Elderly patients, however presented with significantly wider pulmonary artery diameter and larger mean platelet volume were observed. In older patients group, even at the same severity of PE, significant differences of both CT-derived and platelet parameters are present
