Initial State Interactions for -Proton Radiative Capture
The effects of the initial state interactions on the radiative
capture branching ratios are examined and found to be quite sizable. A general
coupled-channel formalism for both strong and electromagnetic channels using a
particle basis is presented, and applied to all the low energy data
with the exception of the {\it 1s} atomic level shift. Satisfactory fits are
obtained using vertex coupling constants for the electromagnetic channels that
are close to their expected SU(3) values.Comment: 16 pages, uses revte
Baxterization, dynamical systems, and the symmetries of integrability
We resolve the `baxterization' problem with the help of the automorphism
group of the Yang-Baxter (resp. star-triangle, tetrahedron, \dots) equations.
This infinite group of symmetries is realized as a non-linear (birational)
Coxeter group acting on matrices, and exists as such, {\em beyond the narrow
context of strict integrability}. It yields among other things an unexpected
elliptic parametrization of the non-integrable sixteen-vertex model. It
provides us with a class of discrete dynamical systems, and we address some

Complete two-loop effective potential approximation to the lightest Higgs scalar boson mass in supersymmetry
I present a method for accurately calculating the pole mass of the lightest
Higgs scalar boson in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, using a
mass-independent renormalization scheme. The Higgs scalar self-energies are
approximated by supplementing the exact one-loop results with the second
derivatives of the complete two-loop effective potential in Landau gauge. I
discuss the dependence of this approximation on the choice of renormalization
scale, and note the existence of particularly poor choices which fortunately
can be easily identified and avoided. For typical input parameters, the
variation in the calculated Higgs mass over a wide range of renormalization
scales is found to be of order a few hundred MeV or less, and is significantly

Towards Solving QCD - The Transverse Zero Modes in Light-Cone Quantization
We formulate QCD in (d+1) dimensions using Dirac's front form with periodic
boundary conditions, that is, within Discretized Light-Cone Quantization. The
formalism is worked out in detail for SU(2) pure glue theory in (2+1)
dimensions which is approximated by restriction to the lowest {\it transverse}
momentum gluons. The dimensionally-reduced theory turns out to be SU(2) gauge
theory coupled to adjoint scalar matter in (1+1) dimensions. The scalar field
is the remnant of the transverse gluon. This field has modes of both non-zero
and zero {\it longitudinal} momentum. We categorize the types of zero modes
that occur into three classes, dynamical, topological, and constrained, each
well known in separate contexts. The equation for the constrained mode is
explicitly worked out. The Gauss law is rather simply resolved to extract
physical, namely color singlet states. The topological gauge mode is treated
according to two alternative scenarios related to the In the one, a spectrum is
found consistent with pure SU(2) gluons in (1+1) dimensions. In the other, the
gauge mode excitations are estimated and their role in the spectrum with
genuine Fock excitations is explored. A color singlet state is given which
satisfies Gauss' law. Its invariant mass is estimated and discussed in the

Inherited Twistor-Space Structure of Gravity Loop Amplitudes
At tree-level, gravity amplitudes are obtainable directly from gauge theory
amplitudes via the Kawai, Lewellen and Tye closed-open string relations. We
explain how the unitarity method allows us to use these relations to obtain
coefficients of box integrals appearing in one-loop N=8 supergravity amplitudes
from the recent computation of the coefficients for N=4 super-Yang-Mills
non-maximally-helicity-violating amplitudes. We argue from factorisation that
these box coefficients determine the one-loop N=8 supergravity amplitudes,
although this remains to be proven. We also show that twistor-space properties
of the N=8 supergravity amplitudes are inherited from the corresponding
properties of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory. We give a number of examples

Conformal Dimensions from Topologically Massive Quantum Field Theory
We discuss the evaluation of observables in two-dimensional conformal field
theory using the topological membrane description. We show that the spectrum of
anomalous dimensions can be obtained perturbatively from the topologically
massive quantum field theories by computing radiative corrections to
Aharonov-Bohm scattering amplitudes for dynamical charged matter fields. The
one-loop corrections in the case of topologically massive Yang-Mills theory are
shown to coincide with the scaling dimensions of the induced ordinary and
supersymmetric WZNW models. We examine the effects of the dressing of a
topologically massive gauge theory by topologically massive gravity and show
that the one-loop contributions to the Aharonov-Bohm amplitudes coincide with
the leading orders of the KPZ scaling relations for two-dimensional quantum
gravity. Some general features of the description of conformal field theories
via perturbative techniques in the three-dimensional approach are also

Stress induced grooming in the rat -- An endorphin mediated syndrome
Exposure of adult male Sprague--Dawley rats to a non-traumatic noise-light stress procedure subsequently increased grooming behavior in a novel environment. The grooming syndrome was marginally facilitated by adrenalectomy and by hypophysectomy. Opiate blockade by naltrexone returned grooming to basal levels. This suggests that stress induced grooming is not dependent upon pituitary-adrenal integrity for its expression, although it may be modulated by the latter. The fully differential single-top-quark cross section in next-to-leading order QCD
We present a new next-to-leading order calculation for fully differential
single-top-quark final states. The calculation is performed using phase space
slicing and dipole subtraction methods. The results of the methods are found to
be in agreement. The dipole subtraction method calculation retains the full
spin dependence of the final state particles. We show a few numerical results
to illustrate the utility and consistency of the resulting computer

Quantitative analysis of soft-bottom molluscs in the Bellingshausen Sea and around Peter I Island
Macrobenthic soft-bottom molluscs were sampled in 30 stations located in the Bellingshausen Sea at depths ranging from 90 to 3304 m. The samples were collected using a quantitative grab box-corer during the cruises BENTART 03, from 24 January to 3 March 2003, and BENTART 06, from 2 January to 16 February 2006. Molluscs represent 1074 specimens belonging to 62 species of Polyplacophora, Gastropoda, Bivalvia and Scaphopoda. The bivalve Cyamiocardium denticulatum was the most abundant species (448 specimens). The abundance per station varied between 1 and 446 specimens. The ShannonâWiener diversity index ranged between one specimen and 2.36, the Pielou evenness index ranged between 0.00 and 1 and species richness ranged from 1 to 14 species. Diversity showed great variations at different stations. After multivariate analysis (cluster analysis and nonmetrical multidimensional scaling) based on BrayâCurtis similarities, we were able to separate two principal clusters. The first cluster groups together species from shallower bottoms near Peter I Island and the Antarctic Peninsula, and the second cluster groups together species from deeper bottoms in the Bellingshausen Sea. The combination of environmental variables with the highest correlations with faunistic data was that of depth and coarse sand at the surface.Publicado
