A dual, fault-tolerant aerospace actuator
The requirements for mechanisms used in the Space Transportation System (STS) are to provide dual fault tolerance, and if the payload equipment violates the Shuttle bay door envelope, these deployment/restow mechanisms must have independent primary and backup features. The research and development of an electromechanical actuator that meets these requirements and will be used on the Transfer Orbit Stage (TOS) program is described
Conflicting values in reflection on professional practice
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the use of reflection as a tool of enquiry within the context of higher education work based learning. The aim of the study is to investigate how reflection on professional practice brings about a review of the values underpinning that practice.
Design/methodology/approach – The data were collected from a group of undergraduate students
undertaking their studies by work based learning in the area of management in a Scottish University.
An open-ended questionnaire was designed to learn about the participants’ views on their perceived
freedom to reflect on their workplace practice in the university, their ability to challenge the
organizational values and established practices in the workplace, and on their relationship with the
workplace mentor.
Findings – Students on work based learning programmes are subjected to demands from at least
three directions: first, their own expectations, in terms of both what they want to achieve by way of
their own development, second, the needs of their organization; and third, expectations of the
university in ensuring that the work produced meets the standard for an academic award. These
interests can sometimes coincide, but they can also conflict, and such a conflict can reveal tensions that run deeper into the culture of the organization.
Research limitations/implications – This study is based on a relatively small sample of learners
in one university, hence the findings are of preliminary nature. Despite the small sample size, the
conclusions are indicative of a potential problem in the design of work based learning, and a larger
cross-institutional study would allow the validity of these results to be verified.
Practical implications – The findings emerging from this study have implications for the
facilitators of work based learning in higher education. Although university work based learning
programmes differ significantly from corporate learning and development efforts, this paper suggests that work based learning providers should co-operate more closely with the learners’ employing organizations towards creating an environment for learning at work. More co-operation between the university and the employer might be more beneficial for all stakeholders.
Originality/value – The literature on work based learning focuses in the main on the use of reflection as a tool of enquiry into workplace practice. Drawing on the study of contemporary work
organizations, this paper explores the tensions arising from reflection on the learners’ practice, and
possible conflict of values that reflection exposes.

Flexible or rigid extending arm
One motion of a manual clamp makes a universally flexible arm instantly rigid in any configuration. Device is locked rigid by meshing of gear teeth, providing great resistance to loading
Landowner\u27s Responsibility to a Social Guest
The early common law, from which our present law has evolved, classifies persons on land into three basic categories: trespassers, licensees, and invitees. The classification determines the standard of care that is owed to these persons. The standard of care is a duty imposed upon the landowner because he is in control of his land, is presumed to know all about his land and any dangers or possible dangers that may exist, and is best able to prevent any harm to others. A social guest can fit into all three of the categories, as a trespasser, a licensee, or an invitee
Building Blocks in the Economics of Mandates
The paper constructs an asymmetric information model to investigate the efficiency and equity cases for government mandated benefits. A mandate can improve workers' insurance, and may also redistribute in favour of more "deserving" workers. The risk is that it may also reduce output. The more diverse are free market contracts – separating the various worker types – the more likely it is that such output effects will on balance serve to reduce welfare. It is shown that adverse effects can be reduced by restricting mandates to larger firms. An alternative to a mandate is direct government provision. We demonstrate that direct government provision has the advantage over mandates of preserving separations.asymmetric information, labour mandates, compensation packages
ENHANCING THE FINANCIAL AND MARKETING PERFORMANCE OF FIRMS IN THE SMOKED AND PROCESSED MEAT INDUSTRY
Small smoked and processed meat manufacturers constitute a unique cottage industry in Texas. This paper assesses ways for such firms to improve their financial performance through better marketing strategies. The results indicate that, on average, small firms tend to be the most profitable. This is true whether size is measured in terms of dollars, pounds, or number of employees. The more profitable firms tend to be those that are located in rural areas or in shopping centers; those that make the majority of their sales at their own stores; those that do less of their own distribution; and those that emphasize fresh meat sales and de-emphasize jerky sales.Agribusiness,
Distortion of the L→M transition in the photocycle of the bacteriorhodopsin mutant D96N: a time-resolved step-scan FTIR investigation
AbstractThe D96N mutant of bacteriorhodopsin has often been taken as a model system to study the M intermediate of the wild type photocycle due to the long life time of the corresponding intermediate of the mutant. Using time-resolved step-scan FTIR spectroscopy in combination with a sample changing wheel we investigated the photocycle of the mutant with microsecond time resolution. Already after several microseconds an intermediate similar to the MN state is observed, which contrasts with the M state of the wild type protein. At reduced hydration M and N intermediates similar to those of wild type BR can be detected. These results have a bearing on the interpretation of the photocycle of this mutant. A mechanism is suggested for the fast rise of MN which provides some insight into the molecular events involved in triggering the opening of the cytosolic channel also of the wild type protein
The Role of Endoscopic Ultrasound in M-Staging of Gastrointestinal and Pancreaticobiliary Cancer
AbstractEndoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is an inevitable tool for locoregional staging of upper gastrointestinal, rectal, and pancreaticobiliary cancer. Transabdominal ultrasound (TUS) and computed tomography (CT) are the most important methods used for the detection of liver metastases and other distant metastases. However, despite its limited operation range, EUS and EUS-guided fine-needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) may add value to TUS and CT by detecting and proving ‘occult’ liver metastases and malignant ascites as well as nonregional lymph node metastases, adrenal metastases, and pleural carcinosis in approximately 5–20% of cases of pancreaticobiliary and upper gastrointestinal tract cancer.
