Role of male behavior in cervical carcinogenesis among women with one lifetime sexual partner
Background: The role of male behavior in the genesis of cervical cancer was examined. In India, where the incidence of cervical cancer is among the highest in the world, promiscuity among women is virtually unknown. In this study, the authors investigated the role of male behavior in cervical carcinogenesis among Indian women who had one lifetime sexual partner. Methods: A case-control study was used. Results. Premarital sexual relationships (relative risk [RR], 1.9; confidence interval, 1.2-3.2) and extramarital sexual relationships (RR, 2.7; confidence interval, 1.5-4.9) of husbands were risk factors. When husbands had sexual relationships both before and during the marriage, their wives' risk of getting cervical cancer increased by 6.9 (CI, 2.3-20.7). Risk also increased with husbands having three or more extramarital sexual partners (RR, 3.05; CI, 1.25-12.6). Sexual contact with prostitutes before or after marriage, however, did not increase the risk. History of sexually transmitted disease before marriage (RR, 2.9) or after marriage (RR, 5.9) was an important risk factor, which persisted after controlling for other factors. Sexual abstinence for 40 or more days after a wife's giving birth or having an abortion provided protection. Sex with uncircumcised men or men circumcised after age 1 year increased the risk of cervical cancer (RR, 4.1). Bidi smoking (bidi is a cheap smoking stick of 4-8 cm, consisting of a rolled piece of dried temburni leaf [Diospyres melanoxylon] containing 0.15-0.25 g of coarsely ground tobacco) for more than 20 years was a significant risk factor (RR = 2.4), whereas cigarette smoking was not a risk factor. Conclusions: Male sexual partners play a role in cervical carcinogenesis
Identificação de pacientes portadores do fator de infertilidade masculina através do cálculo de um novo escore de qualidade de sêmen e pela medida de espécies reativas de oxigênio
PURPOSE: To determine whether patients with male factor infertility can be accurately identified by calculating a novel semen quality score and measuring levels of reactive oxygen species during routine infertility screening. METHODS: Semen samples from 133 patients and 91 healthy donors were evaluated with manual and computer-assisted semen analysis. A principal component analysis model was employed to calculate a semen quality score. In brief, this score was calculated by base 10 logarithms multiplied by varying weights given to 9 sperm parameters. Reactive oxygen species levels were measured using chemiluminescence assay. RESULTS: The semen quality score had a sensitivity of 80.45% and accuracy of 77% at a cutoff of 93.1 in identifying patients with male factor infertility. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves for the semen quality score was 84.28% (95% CI: 65.22%-100%). Reactive oxygen species levels [log10 (reactive oxygen species +1)] were significantly higher in male factor infertility patients. Reactive oxygen species had a sensitivity of 83.47% and specificity of 60.52% with an accuracy of 75% at a cutoff of 1.25 in identifying male factor infertility patients. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for reactive oxygen species levels was 78.92% (95% CI: 72.60%-85.23%). semen quality scores were significantly and negatively correlated with reactive oxygen species levels in the donors and the male factor infertility patients. CONCLUSIONS: The semen quality score and reactive oxygen species levels in semen samples appear to be strongly associated with male factor infertility.
Antioxidant, antiinflammatory and antiinvasive activities of biopolyphenolics
A large number of polyphenolic and heterocyclic compounds, i.e. 4-methylcoumarins, 4-methylthionocoumarins, xanthones, pyrazoles, pyrazolylacrylonitriles, flavones and isoflavones have been tested for their antioxidant activity towards NADPH-catalysed liver-microsomal lipid peroxidation with a view to establish their structure-activity relationship. Inhibition of microsomal lipid peroxidation by 7,8-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarin (DHMC, 2) and 7,8-diacetoxy-4-methylcoumarin (DAMC, 3) was intriguing. We also found that dihydroxy and diacetoxy derivatives of 4-methylthionocoumarin were more potent in comparison to the corresponding coumarin derivatives in inhibiting TNF-α induced expression of ICAM-1. The effect of nine different xanthones has been examined on the modulation of cytokine-induced expression of ICAM-1 in human endothelial cells. 1,4-Dihydroxyxanthone (10) showed enhanced antioxidant activity as well as the inhibition of the expression of cell adhesion molecules, such as ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and E-selectin on endothelial cells in a concentration and time dependent manner. Antioxidant activity of different pyrazoles and pyrazolylacrylonitriles and antiinvasive activity of flavones and isoflavones against solid tumors have also been studied
Behaviour of Quality Protein Maize (QPM) genotypes under well irrigated and water stress conditions in subtropical climate
Drought or water stress is one of the prime problems affecting production of maize at global level. A major objective of QPM breeding programs in semi arid tropics or subtropical climatic conditions is to increase genetic potential of QPM genotypes under water stress conditions. In order to identify drought tolerant single cross QPM hybrids an experiment with 85 genotypes was conducted under well irrigated and water stress conditions. Six drought tolerance indices viz, mean productivity (MP), geometric mean productivity (GMP), yield index (YI), tolerance index (TOL), stress susceptibility index (SSI), and superiority measures (SM) were used on the basis of grain yield in water stress (Ys) and well irrigated (Yp) conditions. Highest significant positive correlations were observed among MP, GMP and YI indices. The hybrids 75, 38, 27, and 50 were more drought tolerant based on drought tolerance indices. Three dimensional plot, bi-plot and cluster analysis confirmed these results. Principal component analysis reduced six indices down to two components with 90.71% proportional cumulative variance. Genotypes were grouped by two ways cluster analysis (using Ward’s method) based on Yp, Ys and drought tolerance indices. Also, the results of correlation, 3D graphs, bi-plot and cluster analysis reveals that the most suitable indices to screen QPM genotypes in drought stress conditions were MP, GMP and YI. These indices could be used in QPM breeding programs to introduce drought tolerance in single cross hybrids
Fishers in Post-harvest Fisheries Sector in India : An Assessment of Socio-economic Status
This paper presents the results of study carried out
during 2009-11, to assess literacy, health and income
status of fishers in India with reference to postharvest
sector which covered fishers in marketing
and processing. The study covered five states and
one union territory, covering 11 districts reaching
548 households. About 52.19% of the respondents
fell in the age group of 36-55. The average male- female ratio was 1.03 and 66.61% of the families
were in the small family category of 2-4 members.
It was observed that the literacy rates among fishers
in post-harvest sector in different states ranged from
63.74 to 95.81%. In general, the literacy rates were
comparable to the national average. Maternal and
child mortality were low in the sample studied and
the average birth weight of infants was 2.68 kg. The
average monthly income was Rs. 7027.45 with a
daily income of Rs. 234.25. About 44.70% of the
households had no savings and 47.81% of households
were in debt
In-orbit Performance of UVIT on ASTROSAT
We present the in-orbit performance and the first results from the
ultra-violet Imaging telescope (UVIT) on ASTROSAT. UVIT consists of two
identical 38cm coaligned telescopes, one for the FUV channel (130-180nm) and
the other for the NUV (200-300nm) and VIS (320-550nm) channels, with a field of
view of 28 . The FUV and the NUV detectors are operated in the high
gain photon counting mode whereas the VIS detector is operated in the low gain
integration mode. The FUV and NUV channels have filters and gratings, whereas
the VIS channel has filters. The ASTROSAT was launched on 28th September 2015.
The performance verification of UVIT was carried out after the opening of the
UVIT doors on 30th November 2015, till the end of March 2016 within the
allotted time of 50 days for calibration. All the on-board systems were found
to be working satisfactorily. During the PV phase, the UVIT observed several
calibration sources to characterise the instrument and a few objects to
demonstrate the capability of the UVIT. The resolution of the UVIT was found to
be about 1.4 - 1.7 in the FUV and NUV. The sensitivity in various
filters were calibrated using standard stars (white dwarfs), to estimate the
zero-point magnitudes as well as the flux conversion factor. The gratings were
also calibrated to estimate their resolution as well as effective area. The
sensitivity of the filters were found to be reduced up to 15\% with respect to
the ground calibrations. The sensitivity variation is monitored on a monthly
basis. UVIT is all set to roll out science results with its imaging capability
with good resolution and large field of view, capability to sample the UV
spectral region using different filters and capability to perform variability
studies in the UV.Comment: 10 pages, To appear in SPIE conference proceedings, SPIE conference

A new method of producing date powder granules: Physicochemical characteristics of powder
A mixing technique was developed to produce free flowing powder granules from date. This method involved preparation of the paste from raw date, mixing with maltodextrin powder followed by an oven drying. In order to determine an optimum proportion of date paste and maltodextrin (DE 6) to produce stable granules, mixing was carried out at various levels of maltodextrin (MD) ranging between 0.54 kg and 1.0 kg per kg of date paste (dry weight basis). The date paste dried with 1.0 kg of maltodextrin/1.0 kg of date paste produced non sticky and free flowing powder. Several physicochemical parameters such as water activity, bulk density, color, hygroscopicity and glass transition temperatures of date powders were measured. The caking of date powders during storage at room temperature was explained using the concept of glass transition temperature
Perception of Body Image to Fat Content in Adolescent Girls and Boys
Background: Adolescents are concerned about their physical appearance during socialization. Adolescents are more self-conscious in this age as puberty causesmany hormonal changestooccur. The aim of this study was to assess the perception of body image to the body fat content in these adolescent girls and boys. Objective was to assess body fat content and BMI and to correlate it with the body perception in this population. Methods: Post ethical approval and written informed consent (assent) from the participants, an assessment of the body fat content was done by using skin-fold caliper and by assessing the BMI of 200 adolescent girls and boys between ages of 13 and 15 years. Perception of body image was assessed by using body shape questionnaire (BSQ), which was correlated to body fat content using Spearman’s correlation coefficient with alpha set as <0.05 at 95% CI.Results: The BSQ scores did not indicate any concern of the body shape (26.89±11) in the studied population. Also their Body fat content (15%±6%) and BMI (19.9±3.6) was within the healthy fitness zone. There was a weak positive correlation between the BSQ score and body fat as measured by skin-fold caliper (r=0.182, p=0.010) and also by BMI measurements (r=0.183, p=0.009).Conclusion: There is a normal perception of the body image and normal fat content present in the adolescent population, which has a weak correlation to the actual presence of body fat within them
An improved synthesis of etravirine
Etravirine (1) is a novel diarylpyrimidine non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor and has recently been approved by the U.S. Federal Drug Administsration for the treatment of AIDS. Its reported synthesis is fraught with many difficulties, the foremost being the poor yield and long reaction time required at the aminolysis stage. We attributed this problem to the presence of a bromide group adjacent to the reaction site of the advance intermediate (6). In order to circumvent this issue, we proposed to defer the installation of the bromide group at a later stage, preferably after aminolysis. Indeed, this protocol has worked well. However, in the process of installation of diarylether and diarylamine functionalities at appropriate positions, we had to reverse the sequence of displacement reactions of the dichloride intermediate (9) with 3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxybenzonitrile (5) and 4-aminobenzonitrile (3). The classical bromination led to the completion of etravirine synthesis
