    Improving College And Career Readiness Through Challenge-Based Learning

    High school students in an Advanced Video class addressed the challenge of increasing community awareness. Students followed a challenge-based learning model developing guiding questions and activities to determine solutions for implementation. Literature supported the use of project-based learning that fostered partnerships outside of the classroom to develop 21st century skills. Students utilized multiple technologies to collaborate, plan, and produce advertising in a variety of mediums. During Phase 2, each team created videos documenting their entire process. Videos were presented to a group of random students and faculty members for critical review. Data were collected through pre and post surveys, observations, and student interviews. Data showed students found the process difficult but beneficial to developing 21st century skills

    Change Project Using a Fall Prevention Action Program to Decrease Falls on a Behavioral Health Unit

    Practice Problem: Fall rates are increasing in the behavioral health units of the East Texas hospital. Due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, the units are short-staffed, which further supports the urgent need for a targeted intervention to reduce fall risk. PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: “In adult behavioral health patients (P), what is the effect of the Edmonson Psychiatric Fall Risk Assessment Tool (I), compared with previous use of the Morse Fall Risk tool (C), on the fall rate (O), in 8 weeks (T)?” Evidence: Falls are the most reported incidents in acute care hospitals and falls of behavioral health patients are more challenging to mitigate than those of other patients. Evidence suggested that the Edmonson Psychiatric Fall Risk Assessment Tool aided in identifying and mitigating fall risks by tailoring care plans to individual patients. Intervention: The Edmonson Psychiatric Fall Risk Assessment Tool was completed on every patient over the age of 18 years, which was admitted, discharged, falling, or had a change in condition, while on the psychiatric unit. The risk assessment was used to determine the risks and other factors that contribute to the patient falling. Once the contributors were identified, the data was used to put interventions into place and revise each individualized care plan to decrease falls. Outcome: The intended outcome was to identify patients that were at substantial risk for falls using the EPFRAT tool, mitigate some of their risks, and therefore decrease falls. Conclusion: Continued emphasis on the fall risks of behavioral health patients will be paramount in the management and success of the continued improvement in patient outcomes

    By targeting surface antigens expressed on tumor cells, monoclonal antibodies have demonstrated efficacy as cancer therapeutics. Recent successful antibody-based strategies have focused on enhancing antitumor immune responses by targeting immune cells, irrespective of tumor antigens. We discuss these innovative strategies and propose how they will impact the future of antibody-based cancer therapy

    Vaccination with ENO1 DNA Prolongs Survival of Genetically Engineered Mice with Pancreatic Cancer.

    BACKGROUND & AIMS:: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is an aggressive tumor, and patients typically present with late-stage disease; rates of 5-year survival after pancreaticoduodenectomy are low. Antibodies against -enolase (ENO1), a glycolytic enzyme, are detected in more than 60% of patients with PDA, and ENO1-specific T cells inhibit the growth of human pancreatic xenograft tumors in mice. We investigated whether an ENO1DNA vaccine elicits anti-tumor immune responses and prolongs survival of mice that spontaneously develop autochthonous, lethal pancreatic carcinomas. METHODS:: We injected and electroporated a plasmid encoding ENO1 (or a control plasmid) into Kras(G12D)/Cre mice (KC) and Kras(G12D)/Trp53 (R172H) /Cre (KPC) mice when they were 4 weeks old (when pancreatic intraepithelial lesions are histologically evident). Anti-tumor humoral and cellular responses were analyzed by histology, immunohistochemistry, ELISAs, flow cytometry, and ELISpot and cytotoxicity assays. Survival was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier analysis. RESULTS:: The ENO1 vaccine induced antibody and a cellular responses and increased survival times by a median 138 days in KC mice and 42 days in KPC mice, compared with mice given the control vector. In histologic analysis, the vaccine appeared to slow tumor progression. The vaccinated mice had increased serum levels of anti-ENO1 immunoglobulin G, which bound the surface of carcinoma cells and induced complement-dependent cytotoxicity. ENO1 vaccination reduced numbers of myeloid-derived suppressor cells and T-regulatory cells, and increased T-helper 1 and 17 responses. CONCLUSIONS:: In a genetic model of pancreatic carcinoma, vaccination with ENO1DNA elicits humoral and cellular immune responses against tumors, delays tumor progression, and significantly extends survival. This vaccination strategy might be developed as a neo-adjuvant therapy for patients with PD

    Students as Surrogates for Managers: Evidence from a Replicated Experiment

    Using students as surrogates for managers in experiments is commonplace, yet this practice is not always valid. To explore when the use of student samples is appropriate, we replicate an experiment previously conducted employing a sample of senior managers involved in financial reporting. The result is that although student and manager responses are significantly different from a statistical perspective, both samples lead to the same conclusion for this experiment. The findings suggest that having some disassociation between students and the target population they are meant to represent does not necessarily make them inappropriate surrogates. To examine when inferences are best supported, we explore the comparability for student sub-groups and managers

    On the Importance of Complaint Handling Design : A Multi-Level Analysis of the Impact in Specific Complaint Situations

    Given the large investments required for high-quality complaint handling design, managers need practical guidance in understanding its actual importance for their particular company. However, while prior research emphasizes the general relevance of complaint handling design, it fails to provide a more differentiated perspective on this interesting issue. This study, which is based on an integrative multi-level framework and a dyadic dataset, addresses this important gap in research. Results indicate that the impact of a company’s complaint handling design varies significantly depending on the characteristics of the complaining customers with which the firm has to deal. Further, this paper shows that, contingent on these characteristics, a company’s complaint handling design can shape complainants’ fairness perceptions either considerably or only slightly. Overall, findings suggest that companies should apply an adaptive approach to complaint handling to avoid misallocation of attention, energy, and resources
