Solutions of mKdV in classes of functions unbounded at infinity
In 1974 P. Lax introduced an algebro-analytic mechanism similar to the Lax
L-A pair. Using it we prove global existence and uniqueness for solutions of
the initial value problem for mKdV in classes of smooth functions which can be
unbounded at infinity, and may even include functions which tend to infinity
with respect to the space variable. Moreover, we establish the invariance of
the spectrum and the unitary type of the Schr{\"o}dinger operator under the KdV
flow and the invariance of the spectrum and the unitary type of the impedance

A comparison of two closely-related approaches to aerodynamic design optimization
Two related methods for aerodynamic design optimization are compared. The methods, called the implicit gradient approach and the variational (or optimal control) approach, both attempt to obtain gradients necessary for numerical optimization at a cost significantly less than that of the usual black-box approach that employs finite difference gradients. While the two methods are seemingly quite different, they are shown to differ (essentially) in that the order of discretizing the continuous problem, and of applying calculus, is interchanged. Under certain circumstances, the two methods turn out to be identical. We explore the relationship between these methods by applying them to a model problem for duct flow that has many features in common with transonic flow over an airfoil. We find that the gradients computed by the variational method can sometimes be sufficiently inaccurate to cause the optimization to fail

Most staphylococci are responsible for skin infections such as boil, carbuncle, and furuncle and some cause food poisoning resulting in severe vomiting and diarrhea. Staphylococci also cause mastitis in cow and also cause joint infection leading to edema and arthritis. An emerging problem in treating S. aureus infections is the increasing resistance against antibiotics
Numerical Fitting-based Likelihood Calculation to Speed up the Particle Filter
The likelihood calculation of a vast number of particles is the computational
bottleneck for the particle filter in applications where the observation
information is rich. For fast computing the likelihood of particles, a
numerical fitting approach is proposed to construct the Likelihood Probability
Density Function (Li-PDF) by using a comparably small number of so-called
fulcrums. The likelihood of particles is thereby analytically inferred,
explicitly or implicitly, based on the Li-PDF instead of directly computed by
utilizing the observation, which can significantly reduce the computation and
enables real time filtering. The proposed approach guarantees the estimation
quality when an appropriate fitting function and properly distributed fulcrums
are used. The details for construction of the fitting function and fulcrums are
addressed respectively in detail. In particular, to deal with multivariate
fitting, the nonparametric kernel density estimator is presented which is
flexible and convenient for implicit Li-PDF implementation. Simulation
comparison with a variety of existing approaches on a benchmark 1-dimensional
model and multi-dimensional robot localization and visual tracking demonstrate

Trends of the major porin gene (ompF) evolution
OmpF is one of the major general porins of Enterobacteriaceae that belongs to the first line of bacterial defense and interactions with the biotic as well as abiotic environments. Porins are surface exposed and their structures strongly reflect the history of multiple interactions with the environmental challenges. Unfortunately, little is known on diversity of porin genes of Enterobacteriaceae and the genus Yersinia especially. We analyzed the sequences of the ompF gene from 73 Yersinia strains covering 14 known species. The phylogenetic analysis placed most of the Yersinia strains in the same line assigned by 16S rDNA-gyrB tree. Very high congruence in the tree topologies was observed for Y. enterocolitica, Y. kristensenii, Y. ruckeri, indicating that intragenic recombination in these species had no effect on the ompF gene. A significant level of intra- and interspecies recombination was found for Y. aleksiciae, Y. intermedia and Y. mollaretii. Our analysis shows that the ompF gene of Yersinia has evolved with nonrandom mutational rate under purifying selection. However, several surface loops in the OmpF porin contain positively selected sites, which very likely reflect adaptive diversification Yersinia to their ecological niches. To our knowledge, this is a first investigation of diversity of the porin gene covering the whole genus of the family Enterobacteriaceae. This study demonstrates that recombination and positive selection both contribute to evolution of ompF, but the relative contribution of these evolutionary forces are different among Yersinia species

Quantum Graphs II: Some spectral properties of quantum and combinatorial graphs
The paper deals with some spectral properties of (mostly infinite) quantum
and combinatorial graphs. Quantum graphs have been intensively studied lately
due to their numerous applications to mesoscopic physics, nanotechnology,
optics, and other areas.
A Schnol type theorem is proven that allows one to detect that a point
belongs to the spectrum when a generalized eigenfunction with an subexponential
growth integral estimate is available. A theorem on spectral gap opening for
``decorated'' quantum graphs is established (its analog is known for the
combinatorial case). It is also shown that if a periodic combinatorial or
quantum graph has a point spectrum, it is generated by compactly supported

Some mixed Hodge structure on l^2-cohomology of covering of K\"ahler manifolds
We give methods to compute l^2-cohomology groups of a covering manifolds
obtained by removing pullback of a (normal crossing) divisor to a covering of a
compact K\"ahler manifold. We prove that in suitable quotient categories, these
groups admit natural mixed Hodge structure whose graded pieces are given by

Analytic and Reidemeister torsion for representations in finite type Hilbert modules
For a closed Riemannian manifold we extend the definition of analytic and
Reidemeister torsion associated to an orthogonal representation of fundamental
group on a Hilbert module of finite type over a finite von Neumann algebra. If
the representation is of determinant class we prove, generalizing the
Cheeger-M\"uller theorem, that the analytic and Reidemeister torsion are equal.
In particular, this proves the conjecture that for closed Riemannian manifolds
with positive Novikov-Shubin invariants, the L2 analytic and Reidemeister
