Building social capital within the framework of agricultural cooperatives development in rural Nepal
Intellectual Property Right on Basmati Rice: Current Scenario and Evidences of Origin, Diversity, Cultivation and Use Values of Basmati Rice in Nepal
Basmati rice, also called the king/prince of rice landraces has very special values in Nepalese society as well as in other countries of Indian Subcontinent. With the objectives of collecting, analyzing and documenting Basmati related information in Nepal, we visited different sites; carried out key informant surveys; organized focus group discussions, online interaction and discussion meetings; requested all relevant offices/ persons/ stakeholders through phone, website, and letter to share information; organized high level official meeting, and Basmati rice expert meeting; documented video documentary and did online as well as library search. Because of its high market value at global level, many countries and organizations have been attempting to get intellectual property rights (mainly patent and geographical indication tag) on Basmati rice. India applied for GI tag to Basmati rice in the European Union (EU) in July 2018, and Nepal submitted opposition letter along with proofs and evidences of origin, diversity, cultivation and use values of Basmati rice on 9 December 2020. A total 133 Basmati type rice landraces are grown in 60 districts of Nepal. Basmati rice is traditionally grown, sold, and consumed in geographically localized areas of Nepal since ancient time. International and national scientists have defined lower altitude of Nepal as one of the centers of origin of Basmati rice. Many Nepalese basmati rice landraces have been characterized and evaluated using morphological traits, isozymes and DNA markers. Four basmati type of rice landraces have been registered in National Seed Board. Many community seed banks have maintained different types of Basmati rice landraces. National Agriculture Genetic Resources Center and International genebanks have collected more than 80 and conserved 68 basmati landraces. Basmati rice landraces have geo-linked traits. The historical culture of production, consumption and marketing of native basmati rice in Nepal should always be favored by both national and international rules and regulations. Nepal has ample and valid evidences to get geographical indication (GI) right on Basmati rice
Electrical and optical properties of dip coated Al-doped ZnO thin films : Effect of Al-concentration, starting solution and sample ageing
Undoped and Aluminum doped Zinc Oxide thin films were synthesized by dip coating technique. The electrical properties of the films were studied due to the Aluminum doping, starting solution aging and sample aging. The sheet resistance of ZnO:Al films was minimum at 2.5 at % whereas carrier concentration is maximum. Both undoped and aluminum doped Zinc Oxide thin films were found to be highly transparent lying in between 65 - 79 % in the wavelength range 367 nm to 1038 nm. The band gap of deposited films changed slightly from 3.22 eV to 3.27 eV
Online sexual harassment among young female students in Ward 10, Baneshwor, Kathmandu, Nepal
Background
Incidences of sexual harassment that occur over the internet are growing
with the development of new technologies and virtual communities. This is a
hidden form of sexual harassment that emerges unpredictably and poses a
public health challenge. The objective of this study was to determine the
extent of online sexual harassment experienced by female students (aged
15–24 years) in Baneshwor (Ward 10), Kathmandu, Nepal.
Methods
A total of 382 female students aged 15–24 – high school (10+2 level) to
bachelor level – participated in a quantitative cross-sectional study. A semi
structured questionnaire, in the English language, was designed for self
administered data collection. It comprised six sections: sociodemographic
information, internet accessibility, use of social media, experience of online
sexual harassment, student’s awareness and online behaviour.
Results
Around 66.5% of respondents reported having been exposed to online
sexual harassment at least once, and most of the respondents (73.2%) had
been exposed to online sexual harassment multiple times. Just under two
thirds (62.8%) of the respondents had been exposed to online sexual
harassment before they reached 18 years of age. The mean age at which the
young women experienced online sexual harassment was 18.94±1.79 years.
Respondents studying in high school (10+2 level), those residing in urban
areas and those accepting friend requests on social media from people they
did not know offline were at higher risk of experiencing frequent online
sexual harassment (P=0.000, P=0.011, and P=0.013 respectively).
Conclusion
The rate of online sexual harassment recorded was high. This shows an urgent need to address the problem;
universities and the government need to play a part. A new module of comprehensive sexuality education for
virtual communication is suggested as an addition to current academic curriculums
Diversity of use and local knowledge of wild edible plant resources in Nepal
Background
Wild edible plants (WEP) provide staple and supplement foods, as well as cash income to local communities, thus favouring food security. However, WEP are largely ignored in land use planning and implementation, economic development, and biodiversity conservation. Moreover, WEP-related traditional knowledge is rapidly eroding. Therefore, we designed this study to fulfill a part of the knowledge gap by providing data on diversity, traditional knowledge, economic potential, and conservation value of WEP from Nepal.
Methods
The information was collected through focus group discussions and key informant interviews. Percentage of general utility of the plants among the study communities was evaluated using the Chi-square (χ2) test of homogeneity. High priority species were identified after consultation with the local stakeholders followed by scoring based on defined criteria. Pairwise ranking was used to assess ethnoecological knowledge to identify the threats to WEP.
Results
We documented 81 species belonging to Angiosperms (74), Pteridophytes (5), and Fungi (2). Most of the species were used as fruits (44 species) followed by vegetables (36). Almost half of the species (47%) were also used for purposes other than food. From the species with market value (37% of the total), 10 were identified as high priority species. Pairwise ranking revealed that WEP are threatened mostly by habitat destruction, land-use change and over-harvesting. Some of these plants are crop wild relatives and could thus be used for crop improvement. Interestingly, our study also revealed that young people who spend most of the time in the forest as herdsmen are particularly knowledgeable of wild fruit plants.
Conclusion
We provide empirical evidence from a relatively large area of Nepal about diversity and status of WEP, as well as methodological insights about the proper knowledge holders to consult. Regarding the unique and important knowledge they have on WEP, young people should be included when recruiting participants to ethnobotanical studies or to any type of consultation about WEP. The habit of using wild edible plants is still alive and is a traditional culinary practice that demonstrates rich traditional knowledge of local people. WEP were found to be important for livelihood as well as showing great potential for crop improvement. Priority species should be promoted for income generation activities through sustainable collection and trade. Communities should engage in minimizing the threats to these valuable resources
Agro-morphological Diversity of High Altitude Bean Landraces in the Kailash Sacred Landscape of Nepal
Many varieties of bean are widely grown across diverse agro-ecological zones in Nepal. And opportunities exist for improving the crops and enhancing their resilience to various biotic and abiotic stressors. In this context, an experiment was conducted from June to October 2016 in Khar VDC of Darchula district to study the phenotypic traits of nine landraces of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The bean landraces were planted using randomized complete block design in three sites (Dhamidera, Dallekh and Sundamunda villages), with three replications in each site for their comparative analysis. The study considered the following phenotypic traits: days to emergence, days to 50% flowering, days to 90% pod maturity, number of nodes, pod length, pod width, number of pods, number of seeds per pod and weight and grain yield for 100 seeds. Kruskal-Wallis test showed significant differences in the landraces both within and among locations. KA-17-08-FB and KA-17-04-FB were late flowering (63 and 65 days respectively) compared to other landraces whereas KA-17-07-FB flowered earliest (within 42 days). In all three sites, three landraces namely KA-17-07-FB, KA-17-04-FB and KA-17-06-FB were found to be relatively more resistant to pest and diseases than other landraces. Eight out of nine landraces in Dhamidera and Dallekh villages and seven out of nine in Sundamunda village produced seeds greater than 1.0 t/ha. Among the nine varieties KA-17-02-FB was the highest yielding variety, with an average yield of 3.8 t/ha. This study is useful for identifying suitable landraces for future promotion based on their maturity, grain yield, diseases resistance and other qualitative and quantitative characteristics
The effect of infant vitamin B12 supplementation on neurodevelopment: A follow-up of a randomized placebo-controlled trial in Nepal.
The most critical period for brain development is before a child’s second birthday. Standardised tests measuring neurodevelopment are more reliable when administered after this period. Severe vitamin B12 deficiency affects brain development and function. In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 600 Nepalese infants (6–11 months at enrolment), we found no effect of 2 µg vitamin B12 daily for a year on neurodevelopment. The primary objective of the current study was to measure the effect of the intervention on the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI-IV) full scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ). We measured the effect on the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development 3rd edition at age 30–35 months (n 555). At age 42–47 months (n 533), we used the WPPSI-IV and subtests from the Neuropsychological Assessment, 2nd edition (NEPSY-II). We also used the FSIQ to estimate subgroup specific effects. The mean (SD) WPPSI-IV FSIQ in the vitamin B12 group was 84·4 (8·4) and 85·0 (8·6) in the placebo group (mean difference −0·5 (95 % CI -1·97, 0·94), P = 0·48). There were no effect of the vitamin B12 on any of the other neurodevelopmental outcomes and no beneficial effect in any of the subgroups. In conclusion, providing 2 µg of vitamin B12 for a year in infants at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency does not improve preschool cognitive function.publishedVersio
Determinants of Cognitive Development in the Early Life of Children in Bhaktapur, Nepal
Background: Children in low and middle income countries may have many risk factors for poor cognitive development, and are accordingly at a high risk of not reaching their developmental potential. Determinants for cognitive development in early life can be found among biological and socioeconomic factors, as well as in stimulation and learning opportunities. Objective: The present study aimed to identify determinants of cognitive, language and motor development in 6-11 months old Nepalese infants. Methods: Six hundred infants with a length-for-age z-score <-1 were assessed with the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler development, 3rd edition (Bayley-III). Information on socioeconomic factors, child and maternal demographics, clinical and biological factors, and the home environment were collected. In a manual stepwise variable selection procedure, we examined the association between selected biological, socioeconomic and stimulation and learning opportunity variables and the Bayley-III cognitive, language and motor development subscale scores in multiple linear regression models. Results: The length-for-age z-scores was positively associated with the cognitive composite score [standardized beta (ß): 0.22, p < 0.001] and the motor composite score [(ß): 0.14, p = 0.001]. Children born with low birth weight (<2500 g) scored significantly lower on all subscale scores. Diarrheal history was associated with poor language composite scores, and females had higher language composite scores than boys [(ß): 0.11, p = 0.015]. Children who had been hospitalized during the first month of life had also lower cognitive and motor composite scores than those who had not been hospitalized. Parental reports of physical punishment and lack of spontaneous vocalization were associated with poor cognitive and language composite scores, respectively. The statistical models with the various subscale scores as dependent variables explained between 8 to 16 percent of the variability in the cognitive developmental outcomes. Conclusion: Our findings reveal important determinants for developmental scores in infancy, and underline the role of biological risk factors faced by marginalized children in low and middle income countries such as in Nepal. The association between biomass fuel use for cooking and linear growth in young children in Bhaktapur, Nepal
Background There are still many people in the world who prepare their meals on open fires or stoves using solid fuels from biomass, especially in low-and middle-income countries. Although biomass cooking fuels have been associated with adverse health impacts and diseases, the association with child linear growth remains unclear. Objectives In a cohort design, we aimed to describe the association between the use of biomass cooking fuels and linear growth in children aged 18–23 months living in the urban and peri-urban community of Bhaktapur, situated in the Kathmandu valley in Nepal. Methods Caretakers of 600 marginally stunted children aged 6–11 months were interviewed about their source of cooking fuel and other socio-demographic characteristics at enrolment into a randomized controlled trial. Children’s body length was measured when children were 18–23 months old. In linear regression models, we estimated the association between the use of biomass fuel and length-for-age Z-scores (LAZ), adjusted for relevant confounders. We repeated these analyses in pre-defined sub-groups and different percentiles of LAZ using quantile regression models. Results Among study participants, 101 (18%) used biomass as cooking fuel. The association between biomass fuel and LAZ was not statistically significant in the full sample (adjusted regression coefficient: –0.14, 95% CI: −0.28, 0.00). The association was stronger in some of the sub-groups and in the lower tail of the LAZ distribution (those who are stunted), but neither reached statistical significance. Discussion Children from households in poor, urban neighborhoods in Nepal which used biomass fuel for cooking were on average slightly shorter than other children, although the association only approached statistical significance. As this was an observational study, residual confounding cannot be excluded. Further studies are needed to confirm these associations, in particular those seen in certain sub-groups.publishedVersio
Sleep characteristics and changes in sleep patterns among infants in Bhaktapur, Nepal
Objective Sleep undergoes major changes during the first year of life, but the characteristics of sleep among infants in low and middle-income countries are not well documented. This study describes sleep characteristics and changes in sleep patterns in infants at 6 and 12 months of age from Bhaktapur, Nepal. Methods This was a community-based longitudinal study comprising 735 infants. Sleep characteristics were obtained by interview with the mother using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaires. The stability of sleep duration and night awakenings were estimated by logistic regression analysis. Results Cosleeping in the parent’s bed at 6 and 12 months of age was almost universal (>97%). At 6 months of age, 254 (35%) and at 12 months of age, 341 (46%) infants had a total 24-hour sleep duration 3 times per night were common (65%) both at 6 and 12 months of age. Infants with frequent nightly awakenings at 6 months had increased odds of frequent nightly awakenings at 12 months (OR = 2.2; 95% CI: 1.6, 2.9). Very few (<3%) mothers reported sleep problems in their infants at 6 and 12 months of age. Conclusions Cosleeping was almost universal among Nepalese infants, and very few of the mothers reported sleep problems in their infants. Infants at 6 and 12 months had similar patterns for both sleep duration and nocturnal awakenings. For infants, there were increased odds of having similar sleep duration and nocturnal awakening at 6 and 12 months.publishedVersio
