Waveform dictionaries as applied to the Australian exchange rate
This paper proposes a new method, called waveform dictionaries, to analyze the trend of the exchange rate of the Australian dollar against other currencies. Four different currencies are explored. They are the U.S. dollar, the Japanese yen, the British pound and the euro. The exchange rates can be classified as non-stationary signals. The waveform dictionaries can reduce the complexity of these signals to produce some informative correlation features. These features are sparse in the time-frequency domain and thus can efficiently represent the characteristics of the signal. These features are then displayed in time-frequency (scale) maps. These maps provide possible insights into market behavior such as the dominant market reaction to news
Evaluation of the People Empowering People Program Within a Prison Population
The People Empowering People (PEP) Program was administered to an incarcerated population. The PEP program teaches life skills and empowerment with the goal of improving personal life skills, parental and family relationships, and community engagement. The results of an evaluation, based upon a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up survey design, indicated that participants reported significant changes in all three targeted domains following completion of the program
The effects of a rational emotive behavior therapy intervention on irrational beliefs and burnout among middle school teachers in the state of Iowa
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) bibliotherapy intervention on the level of burnout and irrational beliefs. This study specifically examined the impact of a REBT bibliotherapy intervention on middle school teachers\u27 irrational beliefs and level of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment, using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey (Maslach, Jackson, & Schwab, 1986) and the Irrational Beliefs Test (Jones, 1968).
The subjects in this study consisted of 167 middle school teachers in the State of Iowa. These teachers taught sixth, seventh, or eighth grade or a combination of these grades.
Data were gathered in the spring of 1999 and the winter of 1999. A pretest-posttest control group experimental design investigated differences between the control and experimental group on the dependent variables pre-post change scores in irrational beliefs, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. The participants in the experimental group were given information about the study that explained the principal tenets of REBT bibliotherapy intervention and how their beliefs could affect their feelings of energy, attitude toward others, and perceptions of accomplishments and achievements. They also received a REBT bibliotherapy intervention, a modified form of Beliefs that Disturb (Woods, 1990), which contained an individual analysis of their irrational beliefs scores. In addition, they received a written explanation of the concepts of feelings of energy, attitude toward others, and perceptions of accomplishments and achievements, as well as an individual analysis of their burnout scores. The control group was given modified information about the study that explained the concepts of feelings of energy, attitude toward others, and perceptions of accomplishments and achievements. They also received an individual analysis of their burnout scores.
The results of the study did not show a statistically significant difference between the control and experimental groups on any of the four research hypotheses. The results of the study suggested that further investigation of the correlates of irrational beliefs and burnout is warranted
Leadership Participation and Style in the Extension Homemaker Study Group Program
The purpose of this study was to investigate the involvement of Lyon County Minnesota Homemaker Study Group members in Extension leadership development activities in relation to the leadership style utilized by the members. Data was obtained through the use of a three-part questionnaire from 250 women who participated in the Extension Homemaker Study Group Program in Lyon County, Minnesota in January, 1983. Relationships among demographic data, leadership participation, and leadership style were investigated. Several significant relationships were found between selected demographic data and level of member participation as well as between selected demographic data and leadership style. The highest participation was found among those who had been members six to ten years and were thirty-one to fifty years old. Democratic-cooperative was identified as the dominant style of leadership in this study. Those who had been a member six to ten years and were thirty-one to fifty years old identified this style of leadership most often. The positive relationship between member participation in leadership development activities and leadership style was significant. As participation increased, so did the utilization of the democratic-cooperative style of leadership. The highest utilization of the democratic-cooperative style was in the areas of home/family life and school/educational pursuits. The lowest was in the area of work/vocational pursuits
