Gyrodactylus thlapi n. sp. (Monogenea) from Pseudocrenilabrus philander philander (Weber) (Cichlidae) in the Okavango Delta, Botswana
A new species of Gyrodactylus von Nordmann, 1832 and the first monogenean reported from Botswana is described from the cichlid Pseudocrenilabrus philander philander,bringing the number of gyrodactylids described from the African Continent to 18. Gyrodactylusthlapi n. sp. can be readily discriminated from the other described species almost exclusively by the shape of its hamuli, which have short roots and large, elongate ventral bar attachment points with the dorsal bar attachment point, demarcating the junction between the hamulus shaft and the root, positioned at the anterior terminus of the attachment plane. The marginal hooks of G. thlapi n. sp., which most closely resemble those of G. groschafti Ergens, 1973, are compared and discussed

Production of high power femtosecond terahertz radiation
The terahertz (THz) region of the electromagnetic spectrum is attracting interest for a broad range of applications ranging from diagnosing electron beams to biological imaging. Most sources of short pulse THz radiation utilize excitation of biased semiconductors or electro-optic crystals by high peak power lasers. For example, this was done by using an un-doped InAs wafer irradiated by a femtosecond free-electron laser (FEL) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Microwatt levels of THz radiation were detected when excited with FEL pulses at 1.06 mm wavelength and 10W average power. Recently substantially higher powers of femtosecond THz pulses produced by synchrotron emission were extracted from the electron beamline. Calculations and measurements confirm the production of coherent broadband THz radiation from relativistic electrons with an average power of nearly 20W, a world record in this wavelength range by a factor of 10,000. We describe the source, presenting theoretical calculations and their experimental verification. Potential applications of this exciting new source include driving new non-linear phenomena, performing pump-probe studies of dynamical properties of novel materials, and studying molecular vibrations and rotations, low frequency protein motions, phonons, superconductor band gaps, electronic scattering, collective electronic excitations (e.g., charge density waves), and spintronics
Early Cambrian origin of modern food webs: evidence from predator arrow worms
Although palaeontological evidence from exceptional biota demonstrates the existence of diverse marine communities in the Early Cambrian (approx. 540–520 Myr ago), little is known concerning the functioning of the marine ecosystem, especially its trophic structure and the full range of ecological niches colonized by the fauna. The presence of a diverse zooplankton in Early Cambrian oceans is still an open issue. Here we provide compelling evidence that chaetognaths, an important element of modern zooplankton, were present in the Early Cambrian Chengjiang biota with morphologies almost identical to Recent forms. New information obtained from the lowermost Cambrian of China added to previous studies provide convincing evidence that protoconodont-bearing animals also belonged to chaetognaths. Chaetognaths were probably widespread and diverse in the earliest Cambrian. The obvious raptorial function of their circumoral apparatuses (grasping spines) places them among the earliest active predator metazoans. Morphology, body ratios and distribution suggest that the ancestral chaetognaths were planktonic with possible ecological preferences for hyperbenthic niches close to the sea bottom. Our results point to the early introduction of prey–predator relationships into the pelagic realm, and to the increase of trophic complexity (three-level structure) during the Precambrian–Cambrian transition, thus laying the foundations of present-day marine food chains
Quantitative Computed Tomography Measures of Pectoralis Muscle Area and Disease Severity in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study
Rationale: Muscle wasting in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is associated with a poor prognosis and is not readily assessed by measures of body mass index (BMI). BMI does not discriminate between relative proportions of adipose tissue and lean muscle and may be insensitive to early pathologic changes in body composition. Computed tomographic (CT) based assessments of the pectoralis muscles may provide insight into the clinical significance of skeletal muscles in smokers. Objectives: We hypothesized that the objective assessment of the pectoralis muscle area on chest CT scans provides information that is clinically relevant and independent of BMI. Study Design: Data from the ECLIPSE study (n=73) was used to assess the relationship between pectoralis muscle area and fat-free mass. We then used data in a subset (n=966) of larger cohort, the COPDGene study, to explore the relationship between pectoralis muscle area and COPD-related traits. Measurements and Main Results: We first investigated the correlation between pectoralis muscle area and fat-free mass using data from a subset of participants in the ECLIPSE study. We then further investigated pectoralis muscle area in COPDGene and found that higher pectoralis muscle area values were associated with greater height, male sex and younger age. On subsequent clinical correlation, pectoralis muscle area was more significantly associated than BMI with COPD-related traits, including spirometric measures, dyspnea and 6-minute walk distance (6MWD). For example, on average each 10 cm2 increase in pectoralis muscle area was associated with a 0.8 unit decrease in BODE (95% Confidence Interval: -1.0 to -0.6, p<0.001). Furthermore, statistically significant associations between pectoralis muscle area and COPD-related traits remained even after adjustment for BMI. Conclusions: CT derived pectoralis muscle area provides relevant indices of COPD morbidity that may be more predictive of important COPD-related traits than BMI. However, the relationship with clinically relevant outcomes such as hospitalization and death requires additional investigation.
