    Smooth Schubert varieties in rational homogeneous manifolds of Picard number 1 are horospherical varieties. We characterize standard embeddings of smooth Schubert varieties in rational homogeneous manifolds of Picard number 1 by means of varieties of minimal rational tangents. In particular, we mainly consider nonhomogeneous smooth Schubert varieties in symplectic Grassmannians and in the 20-dimensional F4F_4-homogeneous manifold associated to a short simple root.Comment: 22 page

    New decoding scheme for LDPC codes based on simple product code structure

    In this paper, a new decoding scheme for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes using the concept of simple product code structure is proposed based on combining two independently received soft-decision data for the same codeword. LDPC codes act as horizontal codes of the product codes and simple algebraic codes are used as vertical codes to help decoding of the LDPC codes. The decoding capability of the proposed decoding scheme is defined and analyzed using the paritycheck matrices of vertical codes and especially the combined-decodability is derived for the case of single parity-check (SPC) and Hamming codes being used as vertical codes. It is also shown that the proposed decoding scheme achieves much better error-correcting capability in high signal to noise ratio (SNR) region with low additional decoding complexity, compared with a conventional decoding scheme.Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication.     Synergistic multi-doping effects on the Li7La3Zr2O12 solid electrolyte for fast lithium ion conduction.

    Here, we investigate the doping effects on the lithium ion transport behavior in garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) from the combined experimental and theoretical approach. The concentration of Li ion vacancy generated by the inclusion of aliovalent dopants such as Al(3+) plays a key role in stabilizing the cubic LLZO. However, it is found that the site preference of Al in 24d position hinders the three dimensionally connected Li ion movement when heavily doped according to the structural refinement and the DFT calculations. In this report, we demonstrate that the multi-doping using additional Ta dopants into the Al-doped LLZO shifts the most energetically favorable sites of Al in the crystal structure from 24d to 96 h Li site, thereby providing more open space for Li ion transport. As a result of these synergistic effects, the multi-doped LLZO shows about three times higher ionic conductivity of 6.14 × 10(-4) S cm(-1) than that of the singly-doped LLZO with a much less efforts in stabilizing cubic phases in the synthetic condition

    I-gel as a first-line airway device in the emergency room for patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

    Aim. The optimal method for advanced airway management during cardiac arrest remains controversial. Most patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in Korea are managed with a bag-valve mask by paramedics, while physicians perform advanced airway management in emergency departments (ED). Endotracheal intubation (ETI) has a risk of failure at the first attempt. By contrast, I-gel, a supraglottic airway device, is easier to insert than an endotracheal tube and shows a higher first-attempt success rate than ETI in out-of-hospital settings by paramedics in the United States. We reviewed the use of ETI and I-gel by ED physicians to assess the first attempt success rate in a hospital setting. Methods. We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients with non-traumatic OHCA who were managed with either ETI using a Macintosh laryngoscope, or I-gel in the ED of Korean hospital from January 2012 to January 2014. Results. Of 322 adult patients with non-traumatic OHCA, 160 received I-gel and 162 received ETI. The first-attempt success rate was higher in the I-gel group (96.9%) than in the ETI group (84.6%, p < 0.001). The time from arrival to obtaining advanced airway management was shorter in the I-gel group than in the ETI group. Conclusions. I-gel showed a better first-attempt success rate and shorter insertion time compared with ETI when performed by physicians in a hospital setting

    Uniform Hazard Response Spectra of Korea Considering Uncertainties in Ground Properties

    The seismic site coefficients derived deterministically are often used with ground motion parameters determined by probabilistic seismic hazard analysis in construction of the design response spectrum. There is, therefore, an inherent incompatibility between two approaches. New methods have been developed to resolve this incompatibility by developing probabilistic seismic site coefficients. In such approaches, the uncertainties in the properties of the ground were not systematically accounted for due to lack of measurements of the ground. In this study, an integrated probabilistic seismic hazard analysis which can quantify the nonlinear seismic site effects and account for the uncertainties in soil properties is developed and used to generate the uniform hazard response spectra in Korea. The procedure used an extensive database of measured shear wave velocity profiles and dynamic curves, which included more than 114 shear wave velocity profiles and more than 15 dynamic curves. The calculated uniform hazard response spectra were compared to the design spectra. Comparisons show significant discrepancy between two spectra, and highlight the need to revise the current design guideline
