The world's environmental concerns have never been larger or more complicated than they are now. Natural catastrophes have grown drastically in frequency and scale over the last few decades, threatening global regions covered by forests and urban woods. Forest fires on a large scale are one of the most dangerous natural disasters influencing climate change and human lives all over the planet. As a result, well-planned and closely coordinated effective preventive, early warning, and response techniques are required to limit their effects on people and the environment. This study describes a smart forest fire monitoring system that may be used in early fire warning systems and offers real-time temperature, humidity, flame, smoke, and location coordination monitoring. The system comprises of a single node and a gateway, and LoRa technology is the communication protocol implied in the system. The node has four sensors that measure temperature, relative humidity, gas levels in the environment, flame and location in order to evaluate the level of fire hazard and the likelihood of forest fires in a specific area. The sensor’s data is uploaded to the database and Cayenne cloud for notification. Using LoRa have an impact of longer transmission range between the sensor node and the gateway as well as it has low energy consumption compared to other communication protocols. Moreover, the system proved its durability under extreme weather conditions

Cataloged from PDF version of article. The last two decades of the twentieth century have witnessed fundamental changes in our way of life. This change is due to the economic and political restructuring on a global scale that has left hardly any single nation untouched. One of the major impacts of globalization is the rapid urbanization and the uneven development experienced in the form of mega-cities. The study illustrates the interaction between the way of life of the inhabitants in lowincome settlements and physical spaces in one of the mega-cities, Dhaka. The factors that affect the physical organization of spaces and its quality are evaluated with respect to the survival strategy of the low-income dwellers. In this respect, the physical characteristics of three types of low-income settlements in Dhaka are investigated; namely resettlement camps, legal bustees and illegal bustees. Besides the housing and neighborhood characteristics, the economic, social and cultural status of people living in those areas are examined by means of questionnaires, in depth interviews and personal observation. The questionnaires aim to evaluate the daily interaction of people with public and private spaces. The differences observed in the characteristics and quality of spaces in those settlements occupied by people with similar backgrounds give us the chance to analyze the factors, which may account for these differences.Mahmud, ShihabuddinPh.D

Ankara : Bilkent University, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture and Institute of Economics and Social Sciences, 1996.Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 1996.Includes bibliographical refences. This study examines the varieties of outdoor activities in a downtown. In this approach the social and physical attributes of outdoor activities are emphasized and their qualitative assessment is undertaken by people's participation and personal observation. Accordingly, a framework is proposed to investigate the temporal and spatial distribution of outdoor activities. The concepts and the problems of outdoor activities are analyzed in a historical perspective and people's behavior and perception of downtown open spaces are evaluated with climatic conditions. A questionnaire is prepared and applied to evaluate outdoor spaces that are exclusively pedestrian and support Atatürk Boulevard in Kızılay, Ankara. Thus, people's assessment of outdoor spaces and their performed activities are obtained and defined. Consequently, an attempt has been made to outline some key pattern for future improvements of outdoor spaces with reference to the users’ expectations and preferences in Kızılay.Mahmud, ShihabuddinM.S

Orbito-frontal epilepsy masquerading as temporal lobe epilepsy—a case report

    Get PDF
AbstractTemporal lobectomy fails to control seizures in a considerable percentage of patients who do not have hippocampal sclerosis. One theoretical reason for failure of surgery is that some of these patients may in fact have extratemporal epilepsy. We present a 28-year-old woman with clinical and scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) evidence of right temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) supported by functional imaging with interictal positron emission tomography (PET) and ictal single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT). An invasive EEG monitoring was prompted by the discovery of a small right orbito-frontal lesion on MRI. Monitoring documented seizure onset at the lesion, with rapid right temporal involvement. The patient was almost seizure-free after a lesionectomy. The index of suspicion of orbito-frontal epilepsy should be high in patients with apparent TLE when the scalp EEG and neuroimaging data are not congruent, or if temporal lobe pathology cannot be identified on structural imaging

Purpose. To compare treatment outcome (survival rate, condition of hard and soft peri-implant tissues) and prosthodontic maintenance requirements of two versus three narrow-diameter bone level implants with Locator attachments supporting mandibular overdentures. Materials and Methods. Twenty completely edentulous patients with atrophic mandibles were treated. Ten patients (Group A) were treated with overdentures supported by two narrow (3.3-mm diameter) implants (Straumann AG, Basel, Switzerland) and ten patients (Group B) were treated with overdentures supported by three narrow implants. Locator (Zest Anchors, USA) attachments were used for prosthetic anchorage. Standardized clinical and radiographic parameters (survival rate, plaque index, calculus index, gingival index, bleeding index, probing depth and marginal bone loss) were evaluated at the time of the completion of the prosthetic treatment (baseline) and after 6, 12 and 24 months of functional loading. Prosthodontic maintenance requirements were also scored. Results. Only one implant was lost (Group B) during the healing period. There were no significant differences with regards to any of the studied clinical and radiographic parameters between the two groups (P > 0.05). Few prosthetic complications were recorded. Conclusions. No need to insert more than two narrow-diameter bone level implants with Locator attachments in cases of atrophic mandible to support an overdenture, however, long-term prospective studies are required to support this notion

A Prospective Study of Early Loaded Single Implant-Retained Mandibular Overdentures: Preliminary One-Year Results

    Get PDF
Purpose. To investigate the predictability of simplifying mandibular overdenture treatment using one-stage surgery and early prosthetic loading of a single implant. Materials and Methods. Twenty edentulous patients with problematic existing mandibular dentures were treated. A single implant with a chemically modified surface (SLActive, Straumann AG, Basel, Switzerland) was placed into the mandibular midline. The patients were recalled at 3, 6 and 12 months. Clinical assessments and marginal bone loss using standardized radiographs were recorded. All complications, failures and maintenance were noted. Visual analog-scale questionnaires were used to record patient satisfaction in five categories. ANOVA was used to determine differences between means of marginal bone loss and different categories of patient staisfaction (=0.05). Results. The 20 early loaded implants were all surviving at the 12-month recall. All implants showed less than 1 mm of marginal bone loss by the end of the 1-year with a significant increase during the follow-up period. Few prosthetic problems were reported. Patient satisfaction was high with a significant increase in all comfort and functional parameters. Conclusions. These preliminary 1-year results indicate that early loading of a single chemically modified surface implant used to retain a mucosa-borne mandibular overdenture is a safe, reliable, and cost-effective treatment

Equilibrium Relative Humidity-Equilibrium Moisture Content Isotherms of Oil Palm Kernels

    Get PDF
Equilibrium relative humidity-equilibrium moisture content (ERH-EMC) or moisture isotherms of solids is important in the drying, solid mixing, packaging and storage of such material. ERH-EMC isotherms of oil palm kernels are determined by using a constant environmental chamber for several combination of air relative humidity (30-90%) and temperature (30-70°C). The isotherms are found to fit the Hasley and Henderson equations well
