Discovery of a new pulsating X-ray source with a 1549.1-s period, AX J183220-0840
A new pulsating X-ray source, AX J183220-0840, with a 1549.1-s period was
discovered at R.A.= 18h32m20s and Dec.=-8d40'30'' (J2000,
uncertainty=0.6degree) during an ASCA observation on the Galactic plane. The
source was observed two times, in 1997 and in 1999. A phase-averaged X-ray flux
of 1.1E-11 ergs cm-2 s-1 and pulsation period of 1549.1+/-0.4 s were
consistently obtained from these two observations. The X-ray spectrum was
represented by a flat absorbed power-law with a photon-index of =~0.8 and an
absorption column density of =~1.3E22 cm-2. Also, a signature of iron K-shell
line emission with a centroid of 6.7 keV and an equivalent width of
approximately 450 eV was detected. From the pulsation period and the iron-line
feature, AX J183220-0840 is likely to be a magnetic white dwarf binary with a
complexly absorbed thermal spectrum with a temperature of about 10 keV.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
Microscale flow dynamics of red blood cells in a circular microchannel
The blood flow dynamics in microcirculation depends strongly on the motion, deformation and interaction of
RBCs within the microvessel. This paper presents the application of a confocal micro-PTV system to track
RBCs through a circular polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) microchannel. This technique, consists of a spinning
disk confocal microscope, high speed camera and a diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser combined with a
single particle tracking (SPT) method. By using this system detailed motions of individual RBCs were measured
at a microscale level. Our results showed that this technique can provide detailed information about microscale
disturbance effects caused by RBCs in flowing blood
ASCA X-ray source catalogue in the Galactic Center region
The ASCA satellite made 107 pointing observations on a 5 x 5 deg^2 region
around the center of our Milky Way Galaxy (the Galactic Center) from 1993 to
1999. In the X-ray images of the 0.7--3 keV or 3--10 keV bands, we found 52
point sources and a dozen diffuse sources. All the point sources are uniformly
fitted with an absorbed power-law model. For selected bright sources, Sgr A*,
AX J1745.6-2901, A 1742-294, SLX 1744-300, GRO J1744-28, SLX 1737-282, GRS
1734-292, AX J1749.2-2725, KS 1741-293, GRS 1741.9-2853, and an unusual flare
source XTE J1739-302, we present further detailed spectral and timing analyses,
and discuss their nature.
The dozen extended X-ray sources comprise radio supernova remnants, giant
molecular clouds, and some new discoveries. Most show emission lines from
either highly ionized atoms or low-ionized irons.
The X-ray spectra were fitted with either a thin thermal or power-law model.
This paper summarizes the results and provides the ASCA X-ray source catalogue

Knee loading stimulates cortical bone formation in murine femurs
BACKGROUND: Bone alters its architecture and mass in response to the mechanical environment, and thus varying loading modalities have been examined for studying load-driven bone formation. The current study aimed to evaluate the anabolic effects of knee loading on diaphyseal cortical bone in the femur. METHODS: Using a custom-made piezoelectric loader, 0.5-N loads were laterally applied to the left knee of C57/BL/6 mice at 5, 10, 15, and 20 Hz for 3 minutes per day for 3 consecutive days. Animals were sacrificed for examination 13 days after the last loading. The contralateral femur was used as a non-loading control, and the statistical significance of loading effects was evaluated with p < 0.05. RESULTS: Although diaphyseal strains were measured as small as 12 μstrains, bone histomorphometry clearly demonstrated frequency-dependent enhancement of bone formation. Compared to a non-loading control, bone formation on the periosteal surface was significantly enhanced. The loading at 15 Hz was most effective in elevating the mineralizing surface (1.7 x; p < 0.05), mineral apposition rate (1.4 x; p < 0.001), and bone formation rate (2.4 x; p < 0.01). The loading at 10 Hz elevated the mineralizing surface (1.4 x; p < 0.05), mineral apposition rate (1.3 x; p < 0.01), and bone formation rate (1.8 x; p < 0.05). The cross-sectional cortical area and the cortical thickness in the femoral diaphysis were significantly increased by loading at 10 Hz (both 9%) and 15 Hz (12% and 13%, respectively). CONCLUSION: The results support the anabolic effects of knee loading on diaphyseal cortical bone in the femur with small in situ strain, and they extend our knowledge on the interplay between bone and joints. Strengthening the femur contributes to preventing femoral fractures, and the discovery about the described knee loading might provide a novel strategy to strengthen osteoporotic bones. Further analyses are required to understand the biophysical and molecular mechanism behind knee loading
Coincidence analysis to search for inspiraling compact binaries using TAMA300 and LISM data
Japanese laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors, TAMA300 and
LISM, performed a coincident observation during 2001. We perform a coincidence
analysis to search for inspiraling compact binaries. The length of data used
for the coincidence analysis is 275 hours when both TAMA300 and LISM detectors
are operated simultaneously. TAMA300 and LISM data are analyzed by matched
filtering, and candidates for gravitational wave events are obtained. If there
is a true gravitational wave signal, it should appear in both data of detectors
with consistent waveforms characterized by masses of stars, amplitude of the
signal, the coalescence time and so on. We introduce a set of coincidence
conditions of the parameters, and search for coincident events. This procedure
reduces the number of fake events considerably, by a factor
compared with the number of fake events in single detector analysis. We find
that the number of events after imposing the coincidence conditions is
consistent with the number of accidental coincidences produced purely by noise.
We thus find no evidence of gravitational wave signals. We obtain an upper
limit of 0.046 /hours (CL ) to the Galactic event rate within 1kpc from
the Earth. The method used in this paper can be applied straightforwardly to
the case of coincidence observations with more than two detectors with

Structure-based classification of tauopathies
Ordered assembly of tau protein into filaments characterizes multiple neurodegenerative diseases, which are called tauopathies. We previously reported that by electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM), tau filament structures from Alzheimer’s disease (1,2), Pick’s disease (3), chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) (4) and corticobasal degeneration (CBD) (5) are distinct. Here we show that the structures of tau filaments from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) define a novel three-layered fold. Moreover, the tau filament structures from globular glial tauopathy (GGT) are similar to those from PSP. The tau filament fold of argyrophilic grain disease (AGD) differs from the above and resembles the four-layered CBD fold. The AGD fold is also observed in aging-related tau astrogliopathy (ARTAG). Tau protofilament structures from inherited cases with mutations +3 or +16 in intron 10 of MAPT, the microtubule-associated protein tau gene, are also identical to those from AGD, suggesting that relative overproduction of four-repeat tau can give rise to the AGD fold. Finally, tau filament structures from cases of familial British dementia (FBD) and familial Danish dementia (FDD) are the same as those from Alzheimer’s disease and primary age-related tauopathy (PART). These findings suggest a hierarchical classification of tauopathies based on their filament folds, which complements clinical diagnosis and neuropathology, and allows identification of new entities, as we show for a case diagnosed as PSP, but with filament structures that are intermediate between those of GGT and PSP
Flowering Time Diversification and Dispersal in Central Eurasian Wild Wheat Aegilops tauschii Coss.: Genealogical and Ecological Framework
Timing of flowering is a reproductive trait that has significant impact on fitness in plants. In contrast to recent advances in understanding the molecular basis of floral transition, few empirical studies have addressed questions concerning population processes of flowering time diversification within species. We analyzed chloroplast DNA genealogical structure of flowering time variation in central Eurasian wild wheat Aegilops tauschii Coss. using 200 accessions that represent the entire species range. Flowering time measured as days from germination to flowering varied from 144.0 to 190.0 days (average 161.3 days) among accessions in a common garden/greenhouse experiment. Subsequent genealogical and statistical analyses showed that (1) there exist significant longitudinal and latitudinal clines in flowering time at the species level, (2) the early-flowering phenotype evolved in two intraspecific lineages, (3) in Asia, winter temperature was an environmental factor that affected the longitudinal clinal pattern of flowering time variation, and (4) in Transcaucasus-Middle East, some latitudinal factors affected the geographic pattern of flowering time variation. On the basis of palaeoclimatic, biogeographic, and genetic evidence, the northern part of current species' range [which was within the temperate desert vegetation (TDV) zone at the Last Glacial Maximum] is hypothesized to have harbored species refugia. Postglacial southward dispersal from the TDV zone seems to have been driven by lineages that evolved short-flowering-time phenotypes through different genetic mechanisms in Transcaucasus-Middle East and Asia
