    Weight faltering and failure to thrive in infancy and early childhood

    Weight faltering, or failure to thrive, is a childhood condition that provokes concern about possible neglect, deprivation, and organic illness. However, research over the past 20 years has brought the validity of this concern into question, leading to the proposal that management should be less aggressive.We summarise the evidence base, discuss new developments, and provide a practical approach to management. Failure to thrive has been defined in a range of ways, with no overall accepted definition but an essential element is subnormal growth or weight gain, hence the increasing use in recent years of the term weight faltering

    CeMnNi4: an impostor half-metal

    Recent experiments show CeMnNi4_{4} to have a nearly integer magnetic moment and a relatively large transport spin polarization, as probed by Andreev reflection, suggesting that the material is a half metal or close to it. However, the calculations reported here show that it is not a half metal at all, but rather a semimetal of an unusual nature. Phonon properties should also be quite unusual, with rattling low-frequency Mn modes. Under the first scenario, the impact of migrating retirees on a small tri-county region in northern Wisconsin is examined. Under the second scenario, the impact of the migration of younger families with children is examined.     The literature on the economic and fiscal impacts of in-migrating retirees on rural communities concentrates on the young, newly-retired. An issue not systematically addressed are the impacts on the communities as these retirees age. The Wisconsin Economic Impact Modeling System, a county level conjoined input-output/econometrics simulation model, is used to assess the impact of an aging rural population. Using data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Expenditure Survey, profiles of two household types are constructed and used to simulate the economic impact of an additional 500 elderly households into a small rural economy. Household types vary by age and, as a result, have different income levels and expenditure patterns.     The existing user interfaces to TEMPUS, Plaid, and other systems in the OSDS are fundamentally based on only two modes of communication: alphanumeric commands or data input and grapical interaction. The latter are especially suited to the types of interaction necessary for creating workstation objects with BUILD and with performing body positioning in TEMPUS. Looking toward the future application of TEMPUS, however, the long-term goals of OSDS will include the analysis of extensive tasks in space involving one or more individuals working in concert over a period of time. In this context, the TEMPUS body positioning capability, though extremely useful in creating and validating a small number of particular body positions, will become somewhat tedious to use. The macro facility helps somewhat, since frequently used positions may be easily applied by executing a stored macro. The difference between body positioning and task execution, though subtle, is important. In the case of task execution, the important information at the user's level is what actions are to be performed rather than how the actions are performed. Viewed slightly differently, the what is constant over a set of individuals though the how may vary

    Polarization correlated photons from a positively charged quantum dot

    Polarized cross-correlation spectroscopy on a quantum dot charged with a single hole shows the sequential emission of photons with common circular polarization. This effect is visible without magnetic field, but becomes more pronounced as the field along the quantization axis is increased. We interpret the data in terms of electron dephasing in the X+ state caused by the Overhauser field of nuclei in the dot. We predict the correlation timescale can be increased by accelerating the emission rate with cavity-QED
