Response to Comment on “Characterization of Excess Electrons in Water-Cluster Anions by Quantum Simulations”

In response to the Comment by Neumark and co-workers, we reiterate that the conclusions of the title Report are based on identifiable characteristic trends in several observables with cluster size. The numerical comparison between simulated and experimental vertical detachment energies emphasized in the Comment reflect quantitative limitations of our atomistic model, but, in our opinion, do not undermine these conclusions

New product pricing strategy and product performance assessment in fast moving consumer goods

    Get PDF
Purpose: This article combines the two perspectives of management interests, namely marketing and finance regarding Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG). The aim is to uncover the marketing environment on pricing strategies in a competitive market environment, product and financial performance as well as assessing product success based on price strategies. Design/methodology/approach: Qualitative research methods are used by the design of a combination of grounded theory and phenomenology, as well as constructive approaches. Findings: The results identify that the marketing environment in terms of price is a consideration of buyer’ decisions and is related to the product marketing environment, and the environment of market competition, namely price activities, antecedents and price outcomes. The marketing environment of price is created based on the marketing environment of product and consumer market competition, while the product performance is determined by the environment of business and consumer market competition. These findings contribute to the conception of business buyer behavior and the marketing mix. Practical implications: The results implications refer to the practice of corporate management on financial management of working capital, and marketing management in general. Originality/value: The originality of this paper comes from the exploration of pricing strategies in an effort to determine the relevance between product performance and finance, and the success of new "FMCG" products.peer-reviewe

Evaluation of wood pretreatments on oak and cedar

    Get PDF
In a separate study, we conducted a series of high-precision radiocarbon measurements using wood from Britain and New Zealand to investigate interhemispheric offsets and possible temporal variations. To minimize variability associated with different species, the pretreatment of the oak (Quercus patraea) and cedar (Librocedrus bidwilli) was to acellulose for both. This study investigates the thoroughness of a range of pretreatment processes by the stable isotope analysis of the products

From neural-based object recognition toward microelectronic eyes

Engineering neural network systems are best known for their abilities to adapt to the changing characteristics of the surrounding environment by adjusting system parameter values during the learning process. Rapid advances in analog current-mode design techniques have made possible the implementation of major neural network functions in custom VLSI chips. An electrically programmable analog synapse cell with large dynamic range can be realized in a compact silicon area. New designs of the synapse cells, neurons, and analog processor are presented. A synapse cell based on Gilbert multiplier structure can perform the linear multiplication for back-propagation networks. A double differential-pair synapse cell can perform the Gaussian function for radial-basis network. The synapse cells can be biased in the strong inversion region for high-speed operation or biased in the subthreshold region for low-power operation. The voltage gain of the sigmoid-function neurons is externally adjustable which greatly facilitates the search of optimal solutions in certain networks. Various building blocks can be intelligently connected to form useful industrial applications. Efficient data communication is a key system-level design issue for large-scale networks. We also present analog neural processors based on perceptron architecture and Hopfield network for communication applications. Biologically inspired neural networks have played an important role towards the creation of powerful intelligent machines. Accuracy, limitations, and prospects of analog current-mode design of the biologically inspired vision processing chips and cellular neural network chips are key design issues

Informal learning evidence in online communities of mobile device enthusiasts

    Get PDF
This chapter describes a study that investigated the informal learning practices of enthusiastic mobile device owners. Informal learning is far more widespread than is often realized. Livingston (2000) pointed out that Canadian adults spend an average of fifteen hours per week on informal learning activities, more than they spend on formal learning activities. The motivation for these learning efforts generally comes from the individual, not from some outside force such as a school, university, or workplace. Therefore, in the absence of an externally imposed learning framework, informal learners will use whatever techniques, resources, and tools best suit their learning needs and personal preferences. As ownership of mobile technologies becomes increasingly widespread in the western world, it is likely that learners who have access to this technology will use it to support their informal learning efforts. This chapter presents the findings of a study into the various and innovative ways in which PDA and Smartphone users exploit mobile device functionality in their informal learning activities. The findings suggested that mobile device users deploy the mobile, connective, and collaborative capabilities of their devices in a variety of informal learning contexts, and in quite innovative ways. Trends emerged, such as the increasing importance of podcasting and audio and the use of built-in GPS, which may have implications for future studies. Informal learners identified learning activities that could be enhanced by the involvement of mobile technology, and developed methods and techniques that helped them achieve their learning goals
