    Flexible delivery of Er:YAG radiation at 2.94 µm with negative curvature silica glass fibers:a new solution for minimally invasive surgical procedures

    We present the delivery of high energy microsecond pulses through a hollow-core negative-curvature fiber at 2.94 µm. The energy densities delivered far exceed those required for biological tissue manipulation and are of the order of 2300 J/cm(2). Tissue ablation was demonstrated on hard and soft tissue in dry and aqueous conditions with no detrimental effects to the fiber or catastrophic damage to the end facets. The energy is guided in a well confined single mode allowing for a small and controllable focused spot delivered flexibly to the point of operation. Hence, a mechanically and chemically robust alternative to the existing Er:YAG delivery systems is proposed which paves the way for new routes for minimally invasive surgical laser procedures

    Does devotion to God push you away from science?: Using religiosity to assessing the impact of the religion/science conflict perspective on the choice of academic major among undergraduate students at a religious institution

    Religion and science are often perceived to be in conflict. Science is thought to deal with facts and evidence while religion is thought to deal only with faith. This conflict perspective is pervasive in modern society and can manifest itself in many ways. One way it may exert its influence is in the academic decisions made by college students. Students who are less religious may be more likely to choose science majors while those who are more religious may avoid science majors. While research does support this hypothesis in a broad sense, there may be special cases where the impact of the conflict perspective on the academic choices of college students is minimized. One such place may be at overtly religious educational institutions where religious belief permeates all curriculum, including that of science classes. In this study, we used Huber & Huber’s (2010) Centrality of Religiosity Scale to measure the religiosity of theology and biology students (N = 122) at Southern Adventist University, a private religious institution near Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA. The goal of this study was to see if the religion/science conflict perspective might be driving educational decisions by looking for differences in religiosity between students in these two disciplines. We found that, though religiosity scores were fairly high for both groups, theology students had higher religiosity scores than did biology students. We also found that theology students tended to maintain high levels of religiosity as age increased, while the religiosity of biology students tended to decrease with age. This implies that the religion-science conflict perspective may drive students’ academic decisions and attitudes even at religious institutions that seek to integrate science and faith

    Evidence for behavioural interventions addressing condom use fit and feel issues to improve condom use : A Systematic Review

Open Access Article (CC BY-NC-ND)Continuing high rates of sexually transmissible infections (STIs) in many countries highlight the need to identify effective behavioural interventions. Consistent and correct use of male condoms is a key strategy for the prevention of STIs. However, some men report problems with condom fit (e.g. the size and shape of the condom) and feel (e.g. tightness, irritation, sensitivity), which inhibits their use. We conducted a systematic review to identify existing interventions addressing condom use fit and feel problems. We searched electronic databases for peer-reviewed articles and searched reference lists of retrieved studies. Five studies met the inclusion criteria. These were generally small-scale pilot studies evaluating behavioural interventions to promote safer sex with men aged under 30 years, addressing, among other things, barriers to condom use relating to fit and feel. There were significant increases in the reported use of condoms, including condom use with no errors and problems. Improvements in some condom use mediators were reported, such as condom use self-efficacy, knowledge, intentions and condom use experience. There were mixed findings in terms of the ability of interventions to reduce STI acquisition. Behavioural interventions addressing condom fit and feel are promising in terms of effectiveness but require further evaluation.Peer reviewe
