We study pocket universes which have zero cosmological constant and
non-trivial boundary topology. These arise from bubble collisions in eternal
inflation. Using a simplified dust model of collisions we find that boundaries
of any genus can occur. Using a radiation shell model we perform analytic
studies in the thin wall limit to show the existence of geometries with a
single toroidal boundary. We give plausibility arguments that higher genus
boundaries can also occur. In geometries with one boundary of any genus a
timelike observer can see the entire boundary. Geometries with multiple
disconnected boundaries can also occur. In the spherical case with two
boundaries the boundaries are separated by a horizon. Our results suggest that
the holographic dual description for eternal inflation, proposed by Freivogel,
Sekino, Susskind and Yeh, should include summation over the genus of the base
space of the dual conformal field theory. We point out peculiarities of this
genus expansion compared to the string perturbation series.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figure
Supporting Real-Time Applications in an Integrated Services Packet Network: Architecture and Mechanism
This paper considers the support of real-time applications in an Integrated Services Packet Network (ISPN). We first review the characteristics of real-time applications. We observe that, contrary to the popular view that real-time applications necessarily require a fixed delay bound, some real-time applications are more
flexible and can adapt to current network conditions. We then propose an ISPN architecture that supports two distinct kinds of real-time service: guaranteed service, which is the traditional form of real-time service discussed in most of the literature and involves pre-computed worst-case delay bounds, and predicted service,
which uses the measured performance of the network in computing delay bounds. We then propose a packet scheduling mechanism that can support both of these real-time services as well as accommodate datagram traffic. We also discuss two other aspects of an overall ISPN architecture: the service interface and the admission control criteria.Research at MIT was supported by DARPA through NASA Grant

Occurrence of an Ocean Sunfish (Mola mola) Larva in the Florida Current
During a yearlong ichthyoplankton survey conducted in the Florida Current, a single ocean sunfish, Mola mola, was found from the 284 samples and 1,454 identified specimens. This sunfish larva is one of only 17 on record from the Gulf of Mexico and northwest Atlantic
The Cytolethal Distending Toxin Contributes to Microbial Virulence and Disease Pathogenesis by Acting as a Tri-Perditious Toxin
This review summarizes the current status and recent advances in our understanding of the role that the cytolethal distending toxin (Cdt) plays as a virulence factor in promoting disease by toxin-producing pathogens. A major focus of this review is on the relationship between structure and function of the individual subunits that comprise the AB2 Cdt holotoxin. In particular, we concentrate on the molecular mechanisms that characterize this toxin and which account for the ability of Cdt to intoxicate multiple cell types by utilizing a ubiquitous binding partner on the cell membrane. Furthermore, we propose a paradigm shift for the molecular mode of action by which the active Cdt subunit, CdtB, is able to block a key signaling cascade and thereby lead to outcomes based upon programming and the role of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI-3K) in a variety of cells. Based upon the collective Cdt literature, we now propose that Cdt is a unique and potent virulence factor capable of acting as a tri-perditious toxin that impairs host defenses by: (1) disrupting epithelial barriers; (2) suppressing acquired immunity; (3) promoting pro-inflammatory responses. Thus, Cdt plays a key role in facilitating the early stages of infection and the later stages of disease progression by contributing to persistence and impairing host elimination. © 2016 Scuron, Boesze-Battaglia, Dlakic and Shenker
The Cost of Stability in Coalitional Games
A key question in cooperative game theory is that of coalitional stability,
usually captured by the notion of the \emph{core}--the set of outcomes such
that no subgroup of players has an incentive to deviate. However, some
coalitional games have empty cores, and any outcome in such a game is unstable.
In this paper, we investigate the possibility of stabilizing a coalitional
game by using external payments. We consider a scenario where an external
party, which is interested in having the players work together, offers a
supplemental payment to the grand coalition (or, more generally, a particular
coalition structure). This payment is conditional on players not deviating from
their coalition(s). The sum of this payment plus the actual gains of the
coalition(s) may then be divided among the agents so as to promote stability.
We define the \emph{cost of stability (CoS)} as the minimal external payment
that stabilizes the game.
We provide general bounds on the cost of stability in several classes of
games, and explore its algorithmic properties. To develop a better intuition
for the concepts we introduce, we provide a detailed algorithmic study of the
cost of stability in weighted voting games, a simple but expressive class of
games which can model decision-making in political bodies, and cooperation in
multiagent settings. Finally, we extend our model and results to games with
coalition structures.Comment: 20 pages; will be presented at SAGT'0
Volume Weighted Measures of Eternal Inflation in the Bousso-Polchinski Landscape
We consider the cosmological dynamics associated with volume weighted
measures of eternal inflation, in the Bousso-Polchinski model of the string
theory landscape. We find that this measure predicts that observers are most
likely to find themselves in low energy vacua with one flux considerably larger
than the rest. Furthermore, it allows for a satisfactory anthropic explanation
of the cosmological constant problem by producing a smooth, and approximately
constant, distribution of potentially observable values of Lambda. The low
energy vacua selected by this measure are often short lived. If we require
anthropically acceptable vacua to have a minimum life-time of 10 billion years,
then for reasonable parameters a typical observer should expect their vacuum to
have a life-time of approximately 12 billion years. This prediction is model
dependent, but may point toward a solution to the coincidence problem of
cosmology.Comment: 35 pages, 8 figure

Optimal Resource Allocation in Random Networks with Transportation Bandwidths
We apply statistical physics to study the task of resource allocation in
random sparse networks with limited bandwidths for the transportation of
resources along the links. Useful algorithms are obtained from recursive
relations. Bottlenecks emerge when the bandwidths are small, causing an
increase in the fraction of idle links. For a given total bandwidth per node,
the efficiency of allocation increases with the network connectivity. In the
high connectivity limit, we find a phase transition at a critical bandwidth,
above which clusters of balanced nodes appear, characterised by a profile of
homogenized resource allocation similar to the Maxwell's construction.Comment: 28 pages, 11 figure
ZZ brane amplitudes from matrix models
We study instanton contribution to the partition function of the one matrix
model in the k-th multicritical region, which corresponds to the (2,2k-1)
minimal model coupled to Liouville theory. The instantons in the one matrix
model are given by local extrema of the effective potential for a matrix
eigenvalue and identified with the ZZ branes in Liouville theory. We show that
the 2-instanton contribution in the partition function is universal as well as
the 1-instanton contribution and that the connected part of the 2-instanton
contribution reproduces the annulus amplitudes between the ZZ branes in
Liouville theory. Our result serves as another nontrivial check on the
correspondence between the instantons in the one matrix model and the ZZ branes
in Liouville theory, and also suggests that the expansion of the partition
function in terms of the instanton numbers are universal and gives
systematically ZZ brane amplitudes in Liouville theory.Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures; v2:how to scale x is generalized;

The 1/D Expansion for Classical Magnets: Low-Dimensional Models with Magnetic Field
The field-dependent magnetization m(H,T) of 1- and 2-dimensional classical
magnets described by the -component vector model is calculated analytically
in the whole range of temperature and magnetic fields with the help of the 1/D
expansion. In the 1-st order in 1/D the theory reproduces with a good accuracy
the temperature dependence of the zero-field susceptibility of antiferromagnets
\chi with the maximum at T \lsim |J_0|/D (J_0 is the Fourier component of the
exchange interaction) and describes for the first time the singular behavior of
\chi(H,T) at small temperatures and magnetic fields: \lim_{T\to 0}\lim_{H\to 0}
\chi(H,T)=1/(2|J_0|)(1-1/D) and \lim_{H\to 0}\lim_{T\to 0}
\chi(H,T)=1/(2|J_0|)
