    Optical detection and modulation at 2µm-2.5µm in silicon

    Recently the 2µm wavelength region has emerged as an exciting prospect for the next generation of telecommunications. In this paper we experimentally characterise silicon based plasma dispersion effect optical modulation and defect based photodetection in the 2-2.5µm wavelength range. It is shown that the effectiveness of the plasma dispersion effect is dramatically increased in this wavelength window as compared to the traditional telecommunications wavelengths of 1.3µm and 1.55µm. Experimental results from the defect based photodetectors show that detection is achieved in the 2-2.5µm wavelength range, however the responsivity is reduced as the wavelength is increased away from 1.55µm

    Nonperturbative Corrections to One Gluon Exchange Quark Potentials

    The leading nonperturbative QCD corrections to the one gluon exchange quark-quark, quark-antiquark and qqˉq \bar{q} pair-excitation potentials are derived by using a covariant form of nonlocal two-quark and two-gluon vacuum expectation values. Our numerical calculation indicates that the correction of quark and gluon condensates to the quark-antiquark potential improves the heavy quarkonium spectra to some degree.Comment: LaTex, 16 pages, three figures, to appear in Nucl.     Consistent response to guselkumab treatment between Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients with psoriasis : an analysis from VOYAGE 1 and VOYAGE 2

    Altres ajuts: Janssen Research and Development (JRD)Introduction: In VOYAGE 1 (NCT02207231) and VOYAGE 2 (NCT02207244), guselkumab, an interleukin-23 blocker, was safe and effective in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. Methods: Patients who self-identified as Hispanic (n = 117) or non-Hispanic (n = 1686) were randomized to guselkumab, placebo, or adalimumab. Efficacy assessments included Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), Investigator's Global Assessment (IGA), and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Results: At week 16, treatment differences for guselkumab versus placebo in the Hispanic and non-Hispanic populations were 67.4 (95% confidence interval 50.4, 84.4) and 77.2 (73.5, 80.8) percentage points for IGA 0/1 and 59.2 (41.9, 76.4) and 69.2 (65.7, 72.7) percentage points for PASI 90, respectively. Treatment differences for guselkumab versus adalimumab were 25.9 (6.5, 45.3) and 17.5 (12.8, 22.3) percentage points for IGA 0/1 and 21.4 (-0.1, 42.9) and 23.5 (18.2, 28.9) percentage points for PASI 90, respectively. Week 24 results were similar. Adverse event frequency was greater in adalimumab- versus guselkumab-treated patients in the Hispanic population only through weeks 16 and 28. In both populations, DLQI 0/1 responses were greater in guselkumab-treated versus placebo- and adalimumab-treated patients at week 16 and versus adalimumab-treated patients at week 24. Conclusions: Guselkumab safety and efficacy were consistent between Hispanic and non-Hispanic populations

    Inhomogeneous magnetism in La-doped CaMnO3. (I) Nanometric-scale spin clusters and long-range spin canting

    Neutron measurements on Ca{1-x}La{x}MnO3 (0.00 <= x <= 0.20) reveal the development of a liquid-like spatial distribution of magnetic droplets of average size ~10 Angstroms, the concentration of which is proportional to x (one cluster per ~60 doped electrons). In addition, a long-range ordered ferromagnetic component is observed for ~0.05 < x < ~0.14. This component is perpendicularly coupled to the simple G-type antiferromagnetic (G-AFM) structure of the undoped compound, which is a signature of a G-AFM + FM spin-canted state. The possible relationship between cluster formation and the stabilization of a long-range spin-canting for intermediate doping is discussed.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review

    The instability of Alexander-McTague crystals and its implication for nucleation

    We show that the argument of Alexander and McTague, that the bcc crystalline structure is favored in those crystallization processes where the first order character is not too pronounced, is not correct. We find that any solution that satisfies the Alexander-McTague condition is not stable.     Aerosol particles at a high-altitude site on the Southeast Tibetan Plateau, China: Implications for pollution transport from South Asia

    &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Bulk aerosol samples were collected from 16 July 2008 to 26 July 2009 at Lulang, a high-altitude (&gt;3300m above sea level) site on the southeast Tibetan Plateau (TP); objectives were to determine chemical characteristics of the aerosol and identify its major sources. We report aerosol (total suspended particulate, TSP) mass levels and the concentrations of selected elements, carbonaceous species, and water-soluble inorganic ions. Significant buildup of aerosol mass and chemical species (organic carbon, element carbon, nitrate, and sulfate) occurred during the premonsoon, while lower concentrations were observed during the monsoon. Seasonal variations in aerosol and chemical species were driven by precipitation scavenging and atmospheric circulation. Two kinds of high-aerosol episodes were observed: one was enriched with dust indicators (Fe and Ca2+), and the other was enhanced with organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC), SO42&minus;, NO3&minus;, and Fe. The TSP loadings during the latter were 3 to 6 times those on normal days. The greatest aerosol optical depths (National Centers for Environmental Protection/National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis) occurred upwind, in eastern India and Bangladesh, and trajectory analysis indicates that air pollutants were transported from the southwest. Northwesterly winds brought high levels of natural emissions (Fe, Ca2+) and low levels of pollutants (SO42&minus;, NO3&minus;, K+, and EC); this was consistent with high aerosol optical depths over the western deserts and Gobi. Our work provides evidence that both geological and pollution aerosols from surrounding regions impact the aerosol population of the TP

    Holographic analysis of diffraction structure factors

    We combine the theory of inside-source/inside-detector x-ray fluorescence holography and Kossel lines/x ray standing waves in kinematic approximation to directly obtain the phases of the diffraction structure factors. The influence of Kossel lines and standing waves on holography is also discussed.     Iron under Earth's core conditions: Liquid-state thermodynamics and high-pressure melting curve

    {\em Ab initio} techniques based on density functional theory in the projector-augmented-wave implementation are used to calculate the free energy and a range of other thermodynamic properties of liquid iron at high pressures and temperatures relevant to the Earth's core. The {\em ab initio} free energy is obtained by using thermodynamic integration to calculate the change of free energy on going from a simple reference system to the {\em ab initio} system, with thermal averages computed by {\em ab initio} molecular dynamics simulation. The reference system consists of the inverse-power pair-potential model used in previous work. The liquid-state free energy is combined with the free energy of hexagonal close packed Fe calculated earlier using identical {\em ab initio} techniques to obtain the melting curve and volume and entropy of melting. Comparisons of the calculated melting properties with experimental measurement and with other recent {\em ab initio} predictions are presented. Experiment-theory comparisons are also presented for the pressures at which the solid and liquid Hugoniot curves cross the melting line, and the sound speed and Gr\"{u}neisen parameter along the Hugoniot. Additional comparisons are made with a commonly used equation of state for high-pressure/high-temperature Fe based on experimental data.Comment: 16 pages including 6 figures and 5 table
