The Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship at the University of Colorado Boulder

The Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship at the University of Colorado Boulder is a campus research center that supports data-intensive research undertaken by the CU Boulder campus community. The center is a partnership between the University Libraries and the Office of Information Technologies' Research Computing group. The center provides consulting and training in methods and practices supporting digital research (e.g., digital humanities, research data management, programming languages), offers cloud and other cyberinfrastructure to support data-intensive research, and provides interdisciplinary educational opportunities. The center's directors will discuss this partnership in practice as well as some of our infrastructure and educational programming, including data publishing for large data sets and the Digital Humanities Graduate Certificate

Observations of the atmosphere and surface state over Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica, using unmanned aerial systems

In September 2012 five Aerosonde unmanned aircraft were used to make measurements of the atmospheric state over the Terra Nova Bay polynya, Antarctica, to explore the details of air–sea ice–ocean coupling. A total of 14 flights were completed in September 2012. Ten of the flight missions consisted of two unmanned aerial systems (UAS) sampling the atmosphere over Terra Nova Bay on 5 different days, with one UAS focusing on the downwind evolution of the air mass and a second UAS flying transects roughly perpendicular to the low-level winds. The data from these coordinated UAS flights provide a comprehensive three-dimensional data set of the atmospheric state (air temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind) and surface skin temperature over Terra Nova Bay. The remaining UAS flights during the September 2012 field campaign included two local flights near McMurdo Station for flight testing, a single UAS flight to Terra Nova Bay, and a single UAS flight over the Ross Ice Shelf and Ross Sea polynya. A data set containing the atmospheric and surface data as well as operational aircraft data have been submitted to the United States Antarctic Program Data Coordination Center (USAP-DCC)

Air-Sea Interactions in the Terra Nova Bay Region of Antarctica as Measured by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

In September 2009, several unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) flew over Terra Nova Bay (TNB), Antarctica to collect measurements of the three dimensional properties of the atmospheric boundary layer. TNB has important implications on the atmosphere, ocean, and cryosphere due to an open water polynya in the region. Within the area of lower sea ice concentrations, significant air-sea interactions occur. Until September 2009, observations of the wintertime atmospheric boundary layer over the polynya had not been collected. The UAVs captured important information on the structure, moistening, and warming of the atmosphere due to the presence of the polynya. This study seeks to increase our understanding of the air-sea interactions in TNB by estimating and assessing the primary forcing mechanisms of heat exchange in the region. Three flights in September 2009 collected measurements designed to capture the evolution of the atmospheric boundary layer as the continental air passed over the relatively warmer and moister surface of the polynya. This dissertation first analyzes climatological observations to put the field season observations into a broader context, showing September 2009 was an anomalous year. Next, a new and innovative methodology, based only on atmospheric data, estimates heat fluxes over TNB. Finally, UAV and satellite data are synthesized to identify the primary forcing mechanisms controlling the fluxes in TNB. The structure of the atmospheric boundary layer is also studied as the continental air mass moves over the polynya. This work is significant for several reasons. First, the UAV data collected are the first in-situ observations gathered during the wintertime months over the polynya. This information is key for understanding the significant air-sea interactions that occur during this season. Second, the methodology developed to estimate heat exchange from the in situ UAV data provides a unique approach for quantifying air-sea interactions without bulk flux algorithms that have large uncertainty. Finally, a better understanding of the forcing mechanisms of energy exchange in this region has widespread applicability toward other polynyas in the Arctic and Antarctic, and in areas of cold air outbreaks. This work also has potential to improve the uncertainty of bulk flux algorithms in model output

Data Management Plan Requirements for Campus Grant Competitions: Opportunities for Research Data Services Assessment and Outreach

Objective: To examine the effects of research data services (RDS) on the quality of data management plans (DMPs) required for a campus-level faculty grant competition, as well as to explore opportunities that the local DMP requirement presented for RDS outreach. Methods: Nine reviewers each scored a randomly assigned portion of DMPs from 82 competition proposals. Each DMP was scored by three reviewers, and the three scores were averaged together to obtain the final score. Interrater reliability was measured using intraclass correlation. Unpaired t-tests were used to compare mean DMP scores for faculty who utilized RDS services with those who did not. Unpaired t-tests were also used to compare mean DMP scores for proposals that were funded with proposals that were not funded. One-way ANOVA was used to compare mean DMP scores among proposals from six broad disciplinary categories. Results: Analyses showed that RDS consultations had a statistically significant effect on DMP scores. Differences between DMP scores for funded versus unfunded proposals and among disciplinary categories were not significant. The DMP requirement also provided a number of both expected and unexpected outreach opportunities for RDS services. Conclusions: Requiring DMPs for campus grant competitions can provide important assessment and outreach opportunities for research data services. While these results might not be generalizable to DMP review processes at federal funding agencies, they do suggest the importance, at any level, of developing a shared understanding of what constitutes a high quality DMP among grant applicants, grant reviewers, and RDS providers
