The milliped family Tingupidae (Chordeumatida) on Kodiak Island, Alaska, USA, a geographically remote record of indigenous Diplopoda

With documentation of an unidentifiable adult female and juvenile Tingupidae (Chordeumatida), Kodiak Island, Alaska, becomes the westernmost indigenous diplopod locality in North America including continental islands. The northernmost and most proximate locality, Yakutat, lies ca. 935 mi (1,496 km) to the eastnortheast, while Haines, the type locality of Tingupa tlingitorum Shear and Shelley, some 1,196 mi (1,914 km) in this direction, is the most proximate familial site. Kodiak is also one of the most remote indigenous milliped localities in the Pacific, the most proximate ones to the west and south, Kamchatka, Russia, and the Hawaiian Islands, United States, being over 3,300 mi (5, 280 km) distant. Tingupidae is recorded for the first time from Canada excluding the Queen Charlotte Islands, and geographically remote, ostensibly indigenous records from the North Pacific Ocean and environs are tabulated

Experimental Analysis of Subscribers' Privacy Exposure by LTE Paging

Over the last years, considerable attention has been given to the privacy of individuals in wireless environments. Although significantly improved over the previous generations of mobile networks, LTE still exposes vulnerabilities that attackers can exploit. This might be the case of paging messages, wake-up notifications that target specific subscribers, and that are broadcasted in clear over the radio interface. If they are not properly implemented, paging messages can expose the identity of subscribers and furthermore provide information about their location. It is therefore important that mobile network operators comply with the recommendations and implement the appropriate mechanisms to mitigate attacks. In this paper, we verify by experiment that paging messages can be captured and decoded by using minimal technical skills and publicly available tools. Moreover, we present a general experimental method to test privacy exposure by LTE paging messages, and we conduct a case study on three different LTE mobile operators

An empirical investigation: How small to mid-sized enterprises use innovation on the path toward ecological sustainability

    Get PDF
Dependence upon the natural environment is redefining the business relationship between ecological, economic, and social systems. In addition, the major market forces of diminishing natural resources, extreme transparency, and increasing social expectations are reshaping a new sustainability path for companies. This empirical investigation explored the phenomenon of sustainability in small to mid-sized enterprises, focusing on the link between innovation and ecological sustainability. In addressing the research questions, an Eco-Sustainability Conceptual Framework was developed and applied to a sample of small to mid-sized enterprises. In addition, the development and use of an Eco-Scorecard helped to identify key performance indicators for measuring the extent to which companies are sustainable enterprises. Testing the compatibility of the Eco-Sustainability Conceptual Framework and Eco-Scorecard occurred through semi-structured interviews conducted at five small to mid-sized enterprises, which allowed participants to identify strengths and weaknesses in terms of the company\u27s progress toward ecological sustainability. Overall, key conclusions revealed sustainability is best approached in a multidisciplinary manner and is a long-term process, as observed in the companies. The Eco-Sustainability Conceptual Framework and Eco-Scorecard blended the natural and social (management) sciences together as a diagnostic tool in showing the significance of small to mid-sized enterprises in implementing sustainable manufacturing processes, products, and services. Based on the case studies, it was possible to track how companies use innovation along the path to ecological sustainability. Small to mid-sized enterprises are an integral part of the ecology of a local community and how they use innovation for sustainability is important to their local community and to other stakeholders. In addition, privately owned firms have an advantage on their path to ecological sustainability because they are better able to balance short-term demands with longer term planning horizons. Although bottom-line profitability is emphasized, environmental and social systems need to be in balance. In addition, based on a small to mid-sized enterprise\u27s sustainability success, global companies are targeting them as acquisitions. Lastly, all the researched firms are identifying and implementing new sustainable processes and products as solutions for their larger company customers in helping them problem-solve sustainability challenges

WordCruncher: A Digital Research and Teaching Assistant

    Get PDF
For humanities research or teaching projects, we each pick tools from our digital toolboxes. If we have few tools, our projects may be limited or take longer. When we become familiar with other tools, we may get ideas for other projects and learn how to do projects faster and better. WordCruncher is a free digital toolkit with tools to help you search, study, analyze, download, create, and share eBooks or corpora. For example, you can add searchable notes, highlight text, do advanced searches, see search keywords in context, and find collocates or n-grams in WordCruncher books that may include formatted multilingual text, images, tags, hyperlinks, dictionaries, and lemma lists. Other apps and online resources may lack helpful tools, tags, markup, formatting, speed, or data. One linguist used online data to create a 700 million-word WordCruncher corpus. He said, “I couldn\u27t have done a lot of my research with what is out there.” For many years, our team has helped BYU faculty, research assistants, and students use WordCruncher tools to answer research questions and enhance student learning. We often help convert digital materials into a WordCruncher book or corpus designed to facilitate a project. This presentation will be a quick overview of several projects that illustrate how faculty and students have used WordCrunchertools and data

Two arch criteria of the ilium for sex determination of immature skeletal remains: A test of their accuracy and an assessment of intra- and inter-observer error

    Get PDF
Although the assignment of sex to immature skeletal remains is considered problematic, some traits have been considered useful for both forensic and bioarchaeological applications. One such trait is the arch criterion found in subadult ilia, which is defined relative to the greater sciatic notch-auricular surface area. In adults, the composite arch has also been described in relation to this area and has proven relatively successful in sex determination. This study offers an examination of the accuracy of the arch criterion and the composite arch in determining the sex of subadult skeletal remains, and an assessment of intra- and inter-observer scoring error. A sample of 97 skeletons of known sex and age (<15 years) from the Lisbon collection (Portugal) were selected and the traits were scored by three observers on orthogonal photos of each ilium. In general the agreement within (67.7-88.5%) and between (50.5-76.3%) examiners was poor and overall accuracy (26.7-52.6%) did not meet the expectations of that reported in previous studies. The authors suggest that this derives from great variation in morphology, difficulties in interpreting criteria and possibly a lack of association between the expression of the traits and sex. Careful examination of sex-related morphology in the immature skeleton and additional blind tests of so-called useful traits should continue to be carried out.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6T6W-4S2VFY1-1/1/207963d293280dcfbc0bec484ebcc10
